PTO: 2023 Training Camp Thread

By the way, is it weird that Toronto doesn't have Jay O'Brien on their rookie roster after signing him to an AHL deal this summer? Is he hurt?

Most of these prospect tournament games are boring for the most part. It’s like going to a glorified AAA tryout really. Not much intensity. Most of the kids are more concerned with not making mistakes than anything else. Same thing every year. Those going to main camp, is where you’ll actually see movement.

The thing you look for every year, is you want to see NHL moments from players. Like in the Detroit/Dallas game that just ended.. Yes, you see the moments from Kasper, Danielson, Lombardi, Stankoven, etc, but it’s the players who control the play out there, who are usually the ones closest to the NHL. They don’t have to score even.. Just control play. The puck seems to follow them around the ice, let’s say.

In that regard, even though Dallas won the game, there really wasn’t a forward who did that. Stankoven had his moments but he needs some seasoning. Same with Kasper, Lombardi and Danielson.

The players who controlled the play were Soderblom and Cross Hanas up front for Detroit, with a little shout out to Doucett. He’s gonna be a sneaky prospect. There’s a lot of “NHL” in him.

On the backend though, that’s where the 3 best players were. Wallinder and Tuomisto for Detroit, and then Bichsel from Dallas. Those three guys were the best players on the ice. Followed by Soderblom and Hanas.

Like I said. Lots of good individual moments from many players but from the opening whistle, to the end whistle, those 5 players controlled more of the action than anyone else.

Bichsel and Wallinder are both going to be really good NHL dmen. Pair carriers too… Which is always a plus obviously. I think we can forget about those skating concerns people always had with Tuomisto too. That kid is very solid and plays with a lot of confidence.

Can an undrafted 18 year old sign as a free agent?
re an undrafted 18-year old from CHL Major Junior,
(this may not be required, but this is my understanding)
if he attends a team's Prospect/Rookie/Training Camp as a ATO,
there is a window until his Junior team convenes where the team can sign him

you may recall 10 years back,
Sergei Tolchinsky went undrafted,
attended prospect camp with 'Canes and NYR,
was set to play for NYR at Traverse City,
but in August, signed ELC w 'Canes instead

Also per this link, it notes the Kraken rookie camp is slated to open September 18th, so hopefully a rookie roster coming soon!

Hmm... their game days overlap entirely too, each playing a game 15, 16, 18th - the Kings with an extra game on the 17th - but both their official releases today list him. Maybe he's leaving one halfway early...

Thorpe was first attached to the Sens back on Sep 5 and even yesterday, though, this blogger didn't have Thorpe with the Kings

Interesting!

To further confuse things, Thorpe was lsited as being in the lineup for both teams today...

Just a small correction, any North American trained player could sign during the window assuming they played an entire draft eligible season in North America. It's just a bit more unusual if an NCAA bound guy were to sign since he'd be giving up his college eligibility. First example I can think of is Kole Sherwood who split his draft year between the USHL and an Ohio junior league. Sherwood had committed to Boston University.

Sherwood went undrafted in 2015; Columbus tried unsuccessfully to acquire a 7th rounder to draft him. They invited him to their prospect camp and they convinced him to sign. Since he couldn't play in the NCAA, Sherwood ended up in the OHL the following season.

There was the goofy case with Vladimir Tkachev. He played part of his original draft year in North America but also played games in Russia. Edmonton tried to sign Tkachev to an ELC but the league rejected it since he hadn't played the entire season in North America.

The league didn't allow Philadelphia to sign Tomas Hyka after he went undrafted in 2011. Hyka played in Czechia but was set to play in the QMJHL for the 2011-12 season. Philly thought they could sign him since he was going to play in the CHL but he had to have already played a season in North America to be signed. Hyka would be drafted in the sixth round by LA in 2012.

LA had Radko Gudas in their 2009 prospect camp as an undrafted invite. He made a good impression and the scuttlebutt was that they would have liked to have signed him but they knew they couldn't. Gudas had played in Czechia up to that point but would play 2009-10 in the WHL. Gudas would get drafted in the 3rd round in 2010 by Tampa.

No invites except a few players on AHL contract (Suess, Oligny, Stewart, Kubicek)

Chicago Wolves' McClennon was also at a rookie camp but won't participate to main camp.
Dallas add veteran netminder Christopher Gibson on a PTO. Might battle for the AHL backup job with Remi Poirier and Bryan Thomson.
