I'm a Brewer fan and you pretty much nailed it with this post. I couldn't agree more.I'll never understand why teams take players to arb, especially star foundational pieces, over less than a million dollars. He filled the 10.750, Brewers countered at 10.01, and then took him to arb. Insane.
Like, what are you thinking? Dude is gone the second he can hit FA.
That said, the likelihood of Milwaukee extending him was always gonna be very low and I've always expected him to get dealt at the deadline of his contract year, regardless of how arbitration went. They are a small-mid market team, they've got good young arm talent, and they develop pitching prospects better than just about any team out there.
But you are right, Milwaukee was penny-wise and pound-foolish in this case. I'm a little disappointed in how this went down.
