Who is the Sabres' #5 prospect?

Vote Johnson.

Mostly because i think he has a much greater chance of playing for the Sabres & being a contributor than both Rosen/Ostlund - who at this point should both be moved for improvements elsewhere on the roster.

I also strongly favour guys who are further along. Guys like Ostlund are still magic beans. And while HF loves a magic bean more than anything else - i don't.

Add Kozak.

I’m not sure how Allsvenkan stacks up against North American leagues, but Rosen played at higher level last season than Johnson has to date, if you’re actually trying to value performance be tougher competition as a measure for NHL floor. And he made that leap at a much younger age than Johnson will. It’s not even like Johnson was lapping everyone in the NCAA.

I'm almost certain that Johnson will play meaningful games for the Sabres. Maybe even this season.

Can't say that for the other two.

Rosen has potential to be at least a middle-six scoring FW. Johnson's potential is a 3rd pair steady mostly defensive Dman. Buffalo really needs that so I'm excited for him to be solid in Rochester this season and fill that roster hole for 2024-25. Rosen can be a more impactful player though, pushing Peterka down or otherwise forcing tough choices for who plays the middle-six RW spots.

KA may ultimately trade Rosen away depending how things go the next couple years, but Rosen has the higher ceiling on whatever team he plays for.

Hey Chain is there something you don't like about Ostlund's game or just impressed with how Rosen has rounded out his?

I like both, I have Rosen a smidge higher based on how well he plays away from the puck against AHLers while not sacrificing his offensive game. Ostlund did nice things through injury in the Allsvenskan and I was impressed by his play there but it wasn't the SHL - I see people talking up his game this last year, and that's fine, but let's be straight that he wasn't in the SHL doing those things.

I don't have them that far apart - I would need to dig around and find my grades and right now sitting up is no fun, let alone data mining.

Appreciate your insight and sorry to hear you're not feeling great man.

Leagues definitely matter and I have these 2 pretty close also. It will be interesting to see if Ostlund's move to the SHL is seamless or not. I have NO a smidge ahead just because of age and I think he's a bit more dynamic offensively but Rosen has been successful against much better competition.

My biggest Covid advice from my doctor was to force yourself to sit up and stand up more than you want instead of lying down too much! Though, data mining is probably a no go haha

With that line of reasoning Rousek should be our highest rated forward prospect as he'll probably be playing meaningful games for Buffalo, while Savoie might only get a 9 game tryout
I'm obviously not just looking at this season. And it's not the be-all-end-all - but has to be a huge consideration. Especially when we're so stacked with smaller, offensive orientated F & comparatively weak everywhere else.

FWIW i have Rosen ahead of Ostlund & i probably have Rousek higher than most others here.

That's respectable. I feel like Rousek and Kozak are future 4th liners, and that's no knock. Girgs probably has a few years left and can help anchor that line. Rousek gets filtered in this season and Kozak starts to get games next season.

Conversely, I don't see Johnson as much of a difference maker. Good skating, passing and a good stick but not much of a toolset otherwise. I see him as a useful #7.

Novikov doesn't have the hands or skating but not bad feet. Decent pass with some time and brings physicality as well. Overall, more of a translatable defensive skill set at the NHL level with a good shot to boot. 2nd/3rd pairing at the next level, younger yet around the same timeline to NHL as Johnson. Just my opinion.

Also wingers are a dime a dozen - you can’t even trade them away in the NHL right now without taking a loss…they have very little value compared to every other position. And RHD are literally impossible to find if you don’t draft them.

Rosen, add Komarov. Nothing to add that has t already been said about Rosen vs Ostlund, but it’s tight, and I slightly favor Rosen only because his projectability is more certain given his year in Rochester. The Komarov add is a no brainer imo. He’s way better than consensus here.

Crazy when Rosen is number 5.

My only gripe is it would have been nice to see a defenseman in there.

No one is getting shutout in this poll. Should get interesting around poll # 8

That’s the thing. At #8 it’s become a crapshoot. One of the AHL guys SHOULD win (Rousek, Weissbach, Kisakov or Murray), based on how closer they all are to the NHL. But I get it if someone prefers Poltapov, Wahlberg or Strbak (2nd rounders) or Novikov or Nadeau or Neuchev (about to start the AHL) instead.

It really depends on what we individually consider when we vote.
