WC: 2023 France Roster Talk

Fleury has retired from national team play. DaCosta may have as well, as he is not listed. Spinozzi an interesting add and he's on the roster for the Swiss games this weekend. Boudon and Dube are involved in AHL playoffs currently, Addamo's team (Scranton Wilkes Barre) did not qualify.
Da Costa hasn't been called up because of who is his current employer (please no one needs to open that can of worms). And as he just prolonged for another couple of years, he won't be around anytime soon.

Buysse has fully retired due to head injury from last January. So goalie duties should be between Papillon and Junca, Ylonen most likely to be the third wheel as apparently Fouquerel wants to be guaranteed ice time if he is coming.

Claireaux is currently injured and missed the Ligue Magnus' finals. Still unsure about whether he will recover on time or not.

After some unmemorable games against Switzerland, France is hosting Slovenia in Cergy.

Players already going home are Fouquerel, Coulaud, Onno, Bougro, Bruche, Farnier, Gueurif, Matima, Simonsen and G. Ville. Only surprise for me here is Simonsen who I thought would stick around for the home games considering is a young promising player.

Joining in are Papillon, Bourgeois, Chakiachvili, Crinon, Boudon, K. Bozon, Claireaux, Dubé, Fabre, Texier and Treille.

Spinozzi is still not around as apparently he hasn't received his passport yet. Still to join up are Auvitu, Perret, Bertrand and maybe Bellemare.

Otherwise you more or less already have the French team for the WC.

Tex and the AHLers joined the team.

Too Bad about the situation of Stephane Da Costa, the skillest French player of all time and one of the most productive KHL player these last 8 years. He could have had an honorable career in the NHL.

France 4 - 3 Slovenia

D. Fabre (S. Treille)
E. Guebey (V. Claireaux, H. Gallet)
G. Leclerc (T. Bozon, A. Texier)
P. Dubé (P. Valier)

New game against Slovenia today.

French team looks pretty good. Some good players from AHL mixed with decent euro league guys + Texier. Too bad Da Costa, Bellemare, Fleury, Berthon, Douay, Auvitu and Spinozzi is not on it. Yeah ofcourse and Roussel...

This is not the final roster for the WC but for the games vs Norway.

According to Bozon last year, Berthon and Douay are not interested for the moment in being part of the national team (Bozon isn't particularly liked by some players). Da Costa, well... Bellemare is just out of the playoffs so still a possibility. But it's been a difficult year for him after losing his mum. Not sure what's the deal with Auvitu. Spinozzi is maybe still waiting on his passport. Fleury has retired from international play..

Chakiachvili is currently sick so not 100% to make it to Finland. Potentially making a weak defense even weaker...

And yeah Roussel is busy churning out syrup.

I know in some sports, they give out passports for guys not from there. Like in Basketball, they gave Embiid a passport so he can play for them in the next Olympics, which are in Paris. Embiid was born in Cameroon and moved to the United States for high school and has played/lived there since (not sure how often he returns to Africa). His only connection to France is that he speaks the language.

I know Ice Hockey isn't the most popular sport in France, but you wonder why they've never made a play at naturalizing guys from Quebec that aren't good enough to make Team Canada.

They used to back in the 80s till the first half of the 2000s. When the independant NA was founded back in 2006, it was decided to concentrate on local players instead and bring in only guys who wanted to really get involved in French hockey. I can remember only 2 players who have been naturalised since. Alexandre Rouleau in 2011... only to ditch them straight after to become Val d'Or Foreurs' GM. And Olivier Dame-Malka in 2017.

In Spinozzi's case, what I don't understand is why it's taking so long or why he is only getting it done now. His father is French so it should be relatively easy.

FIBA must be less strict in that regard.
From what I understand, a player just needs a passport to be eligible. Then a national team can only line up one naturalised player (citizenship gained after 16th birthday, before he'll be considered a local player) per game.

But I may be wrong. BBall bores the s..t out of me.

That's what I said. If you're a dual-national you need to play two years in the country you want to represent. If you're a single national you wouldn't need to do that.

Dyslexia struck again, i don't know what i read first time. Sorry.

But im still a bit confused why did quote me in the first place? I said the same thing in the first post. It's kind a obvious that french can play for France. But canadien kids from Quebec would have to play 2 years in France first and i assume @WarriorofTime meant players like Vincent Desharnais, Simon Benoît, Nicolas Aubé-Kubel, Nicolas Deslauriers, Alex Belzile, Mathieu Olivier etc...

Auvitu has decided not to play this year's WC so as to avoid any backlash from Finnish media in relation to his signing with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk last year

Bellemare is also out.

2 key players for us

I'm disappointed that Auvitu doesn't take responsibility for his actions: the press and the public will put pressure on you, so show who you are - you're not the only foreigner to have played in the KHL this season

Belly needs to rest and get one last big league contract - this guy is a leader for a young locker room and was one of the Bolts' satisfactions in the playoffs (defensive and face-off clinic as a 4C)

France will be playing for survival with Tex's generation - the first 3 games will be decisive

Those are high-profile players you are listing but the French league is full of Quebecoise that would potentially be useful to the French NT. Case in point, 6/10 top scorers in the French league are Quebec-born and 3 of those have played in France for 6 years already. I assume the question was aimed at those guys who wouldn't have to do anything out of their way at all to represent France.
