SABRES ACQUIRE STURM, BENNING FROM SHARKS

NASHVILLE, TN - The Buffalo Sabres announced today that the team has acquired forward Nico Sturm, defenseman Matt Benning, and a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Henri Jokiharju.

Sturm (6’ 3”, 209 lbs, 05.03.1995) comes to Buffalo following one season in San Jose. Prior to joining the Sharks, he spent parts of four seasons with the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche. He won the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2022. The Augsburg, Germany was signed by the Wild as an undrafted free agent in 2019.

Benning (6’ 1”, 203 lbs, 05.25.1994) joins the Sabres following one season with the Sharks. Prior to joining the Sharks, he spent four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and two seasons with the Nashville Predators. He played college hockey for the NCAA’s Northeastern Huskies. The St. Albert, Alberta native was drafted in the sixth round, 175th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

“We are thrilled to welcome Nico and Matt to Buffalo,” said the Sabres GM. “Nico is a solid two-way forward who will bolster our play in our own zone. Matt is a steady, veteran, defensive presence who adds depth to our blue line. We thank Henri for his contributions to the Buffalo Sabres and wish him the best going forward.”

Garland (5’ 10”, 165 lbs, 03.11.1996) comes to Buffalo following two seasons in Vancouver and three seasons with the Arizona Coyotes. Prior to turning pro, he spent four seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Moncton Wildcats. The Scituate, Massachusetts native was drafted in the fifth round, 123rd overall by the Coyotes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

I'm super high on Sturm and Benning is just an incredibly consistent depth D

Jokiharju is near replacement level
Benning has been absolute shit. Sturm is fine. I see Joker as miles better than Benning. Benning is as bad defensively as people claim Karlsson is while being nothing offensively. Sturm gives effort but very little skill.

We feel Mittelstadt is still improving and will be an important piece in the future. In our effort to get younger, we are also looking to shed some salary.

We wanted to maximize our return for Boeser during our retool. We welcome Parker and Josh to the organization and value what they will bring to our team. That said, we understand that Josh is wanting to compete and win a cup, so he is available with retention to any competitive team looking for his services.
