No. I don’t think so. I'm not concerned about that at all. It's probably better to sign him this year then just let him practice with the Habs. He doesn't need a game.

We have Monty & Dobes in Montreal, and Primeau & Hughes in Laval. He probably wants to know where they think he'd fit in this year, and I'm sure he wants NHL experience.

Jake Oettinger played 3 years for Boston University. Ryan Miller played 3 years for Michigan State University. It's not unheard of for goalies to over-cook in NCAA.

Isn't Hughes a Ufa after this year? So they probably don't resign him. If I'm management, I tell Fowler that Dobes and Primeau will be fighting for the backup position next season with the habs. But the plan for him is to get at least half the starts with Laval next season with whoever ends up in Laval out of the two previously mentioned. Not saying it doesn't make sense to go back to Boston College but it makes way more sense to go pro, face better competition, get to be close to Montreal, etc

If we assume the situation is between this or that. Then they're just going to burn a year, it's not like they have been shy about doing that in the past. If Fowler want to gamble on himself it's fine, but that said, it's a (more) risky strategy for a goalie to burn a year.

Nothing left for Fowler to prove at college level. Just be a wasted development year. I would sign him, carry three goalies down the stretch. Give him a start or two. Not like Dobes has been playing well as of late.

To be fair in those two scenarios who the teams had as starters probably played a role.

2000-2001, Dominik Hasek wins the vezina for the sabres, first round pick Martin Biron is knocking at the door for a spot too.

2017-2018, Oettinger has a down year, .915 with BU
2017-2017, Ben Bishop finishes #2 in vezina voting

On the other hand Montreal have a starter who's a .899% and no future goalie stud in sight. If he's any confident in his abilities I'm sure he thinks he can come in and steal the starter job within a year.

All true, but staying for 3 years didn't hurt their development at all. Oettinger still went on to play in the AHL for a year, too. Miller 3 years, which is a bit nuts.

Imo, we shouldn't be rushing Fowler. We should still be looking at him as being 2 years away.

He needs at least a full year in AHL. Montembeault is signed for another 2 years. The timing fits.

He’s using the NCAA return as a ploy to burn the ELC. It’s as easy as that. Habs want him in laval, but goaltending is fine there right now and he won’t play in MTL this year so they’re at an impasse

Going back to BC for a 3rd year and burning a year of his ELC at the end of it, would end in the same result as him signing an ATO and starting his ELC next year.

Have to imagine whichever team drafts Hagens sends him back, but there's a chance that BC loses their top 3 point producers and BC looks like a completely different team, so it would be a real test for Fowler.

Going back to BC would be an absolute waste of a development year, I just can't see him doing that. The Habs can easily find a spot for him with either Laval or Montreal for the 25-26 season, it's really no problem at all.
