Speculation: 2023-24 Sharks Roster Discussion

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Two way street. He's going to want a clearer path to NHL playing time than we can probably provide. That's a big factor in these types of college UFAs making their decisions on where to sign.
He could easily get playing time with the sharks, basically the same deal with graf.

Trade:
-OTT 2nd for Mason Marchment (Dallas is in a cap crunch, we can either extend Marchment or recoup the pick at the deadline)
OK
-EDM 1st and Bystedt for Maveric Lamoureux (Likely an overpay but need to give Utah a reason to move him, they get a big C prospect to replace Geekie and a trade chip to improve the NHL roster)
Let's save that powder for acquiring defensemen. The Sharks have too many forwards as it is.
Sign (rounding up AFP's "worst tax state" projections):
-Dante Fabbro 3x4M
Grier could have had him for free; don't think there is interest
-Alex Iafallo 3x4M
-Nick Bjugstad 2x4.5M
Why sign two more 4th line forwards?
-Alex Lyon 2x2M
Sure

The sharks should try to get Dougie Hamilton out of New Jersey, and maybe take on a contract like Korpisalo in exchange for picks.

Lamoureux is a defenseman. I think you may be confusing him with Bourque's son. Same first name but spelled differently.

There may be. The Sharks were linked to Fabbro the previous trade deadline 2 years ago (granted due to Quinn).

I'll amend it: Let's save that powder for an established, good defenseman...

I get that Lamoreux is a giant. But he's put up very underwhelming numbers in his career, and even his AHL numbers don't inspire much awe.

You're probably right about Marchment. Maybe throw in Colorado's or even our own 2026 2nd?

I figure Utah is set on the right side for a while with Durzi, Kesselring and Marino. Maybe they're better off using Lamoureux in a trade for an established NHL center but this feels like good value for him. He's not exactly killing it in the AHL.
My read as the resident Utah fan is they aren't looking for futures. They need young, win now pieces

Dobson is my ideal target this summer if he’s available. He’s only 25 and if we are going to accelerate our rebuild and get out of the basement we will need a Dman like him.

I’d give up Musty, Bystedt, DAL 1st, SJ 2nd 2026

Or maybe Eklund+2nd

Draft Misa

Future line up of:

Misa-Celebrini-Chernyshov
Eklund-Smith-XXXXX
Kovalenko-Ostapchuk-Graf
XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Dickinson-Dobson
Mukhammadullin-XXXXX
Cagnoni-XXXXX

Askarov

Dobson would be good, but I don't expect it. I think the price would be high, and I don't see the sharks looking to compete for real next year. I think we will have to wait another year for Grier to make the big trade for D. And, actually, if they win the lottery, I would not be surprised at all to see grier sit tight on D aside from a few short term UFAs.

Its clear that Grier remains focused on building from within. It's clear he is not interesting in trading lots of future for today help, only to finish in the 5-8th worst position, waste the futures, and get an even worse pick.

Hes gunna add some depth D via UFA (like Desharnais, or a little better), but I think that's it. Dick will get his NHL shot. He might add a couple reasonable UFA forwards too to buy time for Lund, haltunnen, cherny, and musty to find their pro legs in the AHL before getting called up in time. It's not gunna be that exciting a summer, but I do think the lottery will determine a lot. A win means that the D stock will be pretty full with Schaefer, Dick, Mukh, and Cags. A loss means they will need some long term help on D and makes a big trade for D far more likely.

I don’t think Dobson will be that expensive to trade for. He is unlikely to sign an extension before a trade. So a team is paying for a rental in the offseason. He can just sign his QO or go to arbitration and get a huge payday that takes him to UFA. I actually think he will cost less that Nemec. Now the Sharks shouldn’t trade for him unless they know they can sign him.

I know Graf was getting glazed in the game day thread, but I just wanted to say it’s really nice to see some offensive results for him. I felt like even last year you could see he had a head for the offensive zone but was just a little off the mark. It’s been apparent that he worked really hard in the off season to add some strength and improve his skating, so it’s been frustrating to see him play well in all zones and not get results on the scoreboard.

The recent offensive output makes me feel like he’s got something more to give beyond the defensive bottom 6 role he’s filled since being called up from the Cuda. Kudos to Graf though for making himself a viable option for ice-time even without the offensive production with his B game and details.

I think while they’re entirely different players he occupies that same space as Zetterlund did - a tweener 3rd liner/2nd liner who may not put up the goals Zetts does but makes up for it with defensive reliability.

That said, I’m so impressed by his development this year I’m actually not sure what his ceiling really is. If he has another summer like the last one and comes in even stronger and faster, I can see him being a pretty solid top 6 guy too.
