Speculation: 2023-24 Sharks Roster Discussion

Not that I think it matters too much there is something to be said about the Sharks putting Eklund front and center for all the marketing in terms of him being traded. It feels like outside of Celebrini he’s the most marketed Shark.

What are the chances the Sharks walk away from every Forward RFA/UFA this year?
I think Kovalenko is brought back, and Kostin might be given a QO like Kunin was.

Most of the rest of the expiring forwards are just filler, whether at the NHL, AHL, or ECHL filler. The same deal with the defensemen and goalies, frankly.

In total, I see Mukhamadullin, Kovalenko, Thompson, Carriere, and maybe Kostin and White being brought back.

What are the chances the Sharks walk away from every Forward RFA/UFA this year?
Kostin: who knows? He’s so hot and cold and in and out of the coach’s doghouse. Maybe 50/50.

Kovalenko: likely brought back. Grier talked him up a ton when they got him in the Blackwood trade. I could see him being brought back on a 1 year deal to see what he can do.

Rutta: 0 chance he’s brought back I think

Mukhammadullin: 100% he’s brought back. Something would have to go disastrously wrong for him not to be.

Schuldt: they likely try to bring him back as AHL depth but who knows if another team will offer him an NHL spot

Georgiev: I’d like to say 0 chance he’s brought back but I could see him brought back on a cheap deal to be Askarov’s back up.

Romanov: again I’d like to say 0 chance but will probably be brought back.

Berglund: absolutely 0 idea. I’m guessing he probably goes overseas.

Bordeleau: likely brought back again or at least qualified. I don’t really see a reason not to qualify him.

Burke: I assume he goes overseas.

White: probably same as Schuldt. They’ll try but who knows.

Russell: maybe he goes overseas or signs an AHL deal

Gushchin: same as Bordeleau.

Duehr: probably walks

Coe: probably walks

Sabourin: probably walks

Regenda: I have no idea.

Thompson: same as Bordeleau and Gushchin

Carriere: I have no idea

So basically pretty much 0 chance we let all of our guys go. I do assume we will have 10 extra contract spots open up across the group and we bring up the rest.

What are the chances the Sharks walk away from every Forward RFA/UFA this year?
I think it's a non-zero chance but I don't think it's very high. Kovalenko is maybe someone we trade but we don't walk away from. Someone on the Barracuda that's a free agent will come back. Too many spots to fill and not enough incoming talent to walk away from all of them.

Seeing how much Ottawa is playing Zetterlund in their line up, it may an opportunity for MG to offer sheet him in the summer for something like 3.5-4 mil. Ottawa will have to weigh if they really want to keep him at that price and Sharks can get him back at a lower cap hit. I don't know, I have a feeling that if Ottawa doesn't find him a spot, he will be relatively cheap in the offseason.

I can't imagine the Senators not moving Zetterlund up at some point down the stretch. I'm guessing that they're waiting for their winning streak to snap before making lineup changes of that nature since they're on a heater right now.

They may well be trying to depress his production going into arbitration by this deployment. Would be a scummy move, but sounds very Ottawa Senators.

Crazy as it sounds, could we offer back the 2nd rounder and then resign zetts?

That would be one of the strangest, get ingenious moves that grier could make.

I get that Zett is short and grier wants to get bigger, but if he comes back, Ek will be so happy and they can still integrate the bigger guys into the lineup. Zetterlund can still fit nicely into the top 9.

Not sure Ive even seen an RFA rental...

I don't think Grier sees a significant place for Zetterlund going forward.

A few thoughts going into the off season:

Make a strong pinch for Gavrikov. His two-way play makes him an ideal addition to our top four, in my opinion, and could pair nicely with Muk.

Take advantage of Dallas' upcoming cap crunch, and acquire Marchment for a relatively low price. He's young enough that I wouldn't have any qualms about extending him, or we could flip him at the deadline.

Sign a cheap backup for Asky, like Allen, or Lyon.

Additionally, if Dallas ends up winning the cup, ask Granlund if he would be interested in coming back to the organization on a deal with similar term to Toffoli's, but with a higher cap hit.

Eklund-Celebrini-Granlund
Marchment-Smith-Toffoli
Kovolenko-Wennberg-Graf
Cardwell-Ostapchick-Dellandrea
Goodrow

Muk-Gavrikov
Ferraro-Liljegren
Thrun-Thompson
Vlasic

Asky-Allen

I would be behind the adds made in this lineup especially Gavrikov and Marchment. I just don't think it's enough on the blue line. Ferraro and Liljegren would be a solidly competitive 3rd pairing. Thrun and Thompson wouldn't be and neither would Thrun with Desharnais. Vlasic also wouldn't be a part of a competitive 3rd pairing with any of those guys. I think they can do better. It may even just be something like signing Fabbro to push Liljegren to the 3rd pairing.

What are the chances the Sharks walk away from every Forward RFA/UFA this year?
Kostin: Good as gone.

Kovalenko: 25%

Rutta: Begone.

Mukhammadullin: 0%.

Schuldt: 90%

Georgiev: GTFO.

Romanov: 50%

Berglund: who?

Bordeleau: 25%. More likely to be traded than non-QA'd.

Burke: who?

White: Cuda only deal.

Russell: who?

Gushchin: 10%

Duehr: gone.

Coe: AHL-only deal

Sabourin: gone.

Regenda: gone.

Thompson: 15%

Carriere: 0%

If Bordeleau and Gushchin couldn't crack the worst team in the league, why would any team want them?
The AHL team might be able to use them for their skill and they're vets by then. Might as well keep them around unless you genuinely believe there's no path to the NHL then yeah let them look for another opportunity.
