2023-24 Senators Prospect Watch

I expect that the Sens could promote two prospects for next season Merilainen G & maybe Halliday to replace Gaudette on the 4th line C spot.

Staios said Yak had a very defensive coach that didn’t give him as much leeway to do things with the puck as he (Staios) hoped. So perhaps some context on the numbers there.

On Halliday - they’re being strategic on when to bring him up. Don’t want him on the 4th line because he’s a gifted offensive player. Added that he has to continue to develop but he has things you can’t teach.

when did he say this? in today's presser?

They were a +83 team allowing only 183 goals (best in conference and 2nd best in the WHL). Yakemchuk was around 0 most of the year +/- wise and his +6 was achieved in his last ~ 8 games
He clearly was not having great success keeping pucks out of his net even with his increased focus on defense

Last year 2023-24 he was -6 and his team was a -5 allowing 255 goals

Also Staios said players with great game sense tend to have an easier time transitioning to the NHL without going through the AHL, and then goes on to say that given Yak’s sense he wouldn’t be surprised to see him on opening night roster but that it’s too early to say.

Yikes. Thanks. Sounds like he'll start if he has a good preseason. Have to see how it all unfolds

Montgomery just took another and they give up a 4 on 3 go ahead

Penalties need to be addressed. Can't be down a man for a full period of hockey

If they don’t want Halliday on the fourth must mean they want him in the third which would mean Greig or pinto move up the lineup.
That’s assuming this happens some time next season.

What’s the shut down line then?

Halliday has a looooooong way to go
 
I view what Staois has said as being that there won't be much change in the lineup from this yr to next. While I doubt they move Jensen it would be the logical move to free up some money to make a UFA signing of some significance, given his age & injury history. That would free up some money to add a 4th line centre & maybe a cheap vet backup if they think Merilainen is still too young & inexperienced. One could argue that Zetterlund & Perron aren't really 4th line players either & one will definitely be regulated to the 4th line so I don't see why Halliday should not play there & give them some offence from that 4th line too.

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Giroux - likely signs a 1 or 2 yr deal
Zetterlund - Cozens - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Amadio - energy line/PK line
Cousins - ??? - Perron/MacEwan

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen/Yakemchuk
Kleven - Matinpalo/Gilbert

Ullmark - ???/Merilainen
 
Calgary already started to tear down their team.

What a terrible, terrible decision to go for it.

Tulk, Wetsch (who they just traded for peanuts) and Yakemchuk would have gotten enormous returns, instead they opted to trade away a ton of futures for guys who are gone next year for a 2nd round exit.

Literally put their team 3 years behind.

Both Calgary's NHL and WHL teams refuse to rebuild when they need to.

Merilainen looks like the likely backup goaltender next season based on his play with Ottawa and belleville; Halliday is a big maybe for me.

The end of season presser with S & G made it sound like G would like to have Gaudette back as 4C. That will depend on the offers he might get as a UFA.

Given that Green did not use Gilbert in the playoffs, I suspect he may not be signed as a UFA on an NHL contract (maybe a 2-way AHL contract) and they may sign someone else to replace Hamonic at RD. OR they might sign a top 6 forward. OR they may go cheap and not sign anyone good. OR a trade is in the works with our 1st round draft pick and/or a roster player included to get someone good. OR . . .
