2023-24 Senators Prospect Watch

Yeah I see $18,444,286 but only 13 players under contract, need 9 guys to have 13 forwards and 7 D-men

Zetterlund an Giroux (if signed) could easily take up 8 M$ (and maybe more) so you have 10 M$ left for 7 guys... Kleven and Matinpalo will most likely be prioritized, another 3 M$ if we're being conservative so 7 M$ for the remaining 5 spots, which is an average of 1.4 M$ per spot. So my point was that it's going to be very hard to improve the team, unless they don't sign Giroux and instead throw the money at someone younger/better?
Why aren't you factoring in progression? This team is still young and the core is still improving. An even more established Stutzle, Greig, Sanderson, Pinto and Kleven will absolutely dwarf the regression you are concerned about.

Then there is the progression of the coaching system. This team plays good hockey when it's on, no reason to believe they won't be more consistent next year. In the same vane there is the value of experience. They are still earning how to win and will be better at that key aspect next year, especially after a taste of the playoffs.

Goaltending likely takes a step next year too, even if Forsberg hasn't been that bad.

Nick Jensen is not a candidate for regression in my eyes. He is such an excellent skater and so smart that age alone at a young 35 (September) is not destined to tank him. I won't say he is as efficient with his play as Giordano but he isn't far off.

And we have no cap concerns. It will be more than $7M for five spots (your numbers are inflated) and two of those will be Halliday/Crookshank and Merrilainen on ELC's. Bargain hunting for 3 players on $5M +, one of them being a #7 D (if we don't promote Sebrango), isn't a bad situation.

On top of all that there is the Steve Staios factor. We now have a GM who can improve the team out of nowhere.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill if you think Giroux, Perron and Jensen's regressions are going to make us worse next year. It's either that they won't regress as much as you think or we can easily mitigate that possibility with progress in other areas.

The Sens need a right shot D who can play in the top four not a left shot, they already have Kleven, Sanderson & Chabot on the left side & a few more in Belleville & two of them are young enough that they are going to be here for a long time while Chabot is a good enough skater to be re-signed. Jensen will be gone after next season, he is aging out & Zub will be 30 yrs old to start next season, they need a right shot D & Yak is a right shot D who fits the team profile. Matinpalo has no offence to his game & is strictly a 3rd pairing RD & they gave up on JBD.

I think the decision came down to Parek or Yak & they took the bigger tougher D who won't get pushed around in the NHL. They will also get most of their offence from Sanderson who will play on the 1st PP for the next decade plus. And Chabot will QB the second PP for at least the next 5 yrs if they re-sign him & I expect they will, Yak will fill in for either should they get hurt on the 2nd PP, but mostly will play on the PK special teams. All this other stuff people are bringing up I don't think fits into what they needed & people will hate that because at the draft you are not suppose to draft for need although it seems a lot of teams do ignoring that made up rule. Eventually they will need to replace Zub too & it remains to be seen whether they have that kind of player in the org yet or not & if not, why wouldn't they select another similar right shot D like Yak who is physically closer to being NHL ready.

oh, simply because I don't perceive the Ottawa Senators as a young team anymore, they're probably right there in the middle as of now and will start getting older than the average team soon (18th oldest this seasons using EP)

I still believe in Stutzle as he's still just 23 y/o but next season will also be his 6th season. MacKinnon started almost a year younger and broke out in his 5th season. Sanderson is 22 and it will be his 4th season but we can still expect progression. Greig will also continue to progress but what do you expect? I don't see more than an elite 3rd liner. Same with Pinto who will be 25 y/o. As for Kleven, what do we expect? I don't see any offensive potential, do you expect a Top-4 guy?

The concerns were raised years ago while some were just salivating at this team's potential. The reality is we couldn't afford to have Pierre Dorion as a GM much longer but it happened and the results are that today, there's limited internal progression potential. The progression has to come from other ways, i.e. mostly Staios work (and Alfie knows how much they have to revamp the drafting dept)

I was super excited for this team after the 2020 draft, even claiming on the mainboards that this team had the best future in the league, arguing with some ferocious Devils and Wings fans. But then I saw Dorion work as another phase of the rebuild started and how he spent the money available. I thought that maybe we were still tanking but lol we picked Tyler freaking Boucher with the 10th overall pick so it was confirmed that Dorion had no idea what he was doing (which frankly, started with the Zibanejad trade). And then we bled for 3 more years...

While some pansies on this board call me a Habs fan because I was among the firsts to realize that their future outlook was trending very well (and it's materializing now even though I thought it'd be more next season), there's some people on this planet who are able to call a cat a cat. Sorry if I can. Most of my "crazy takes" happen in the real world.

Nick Jensen is not a candidate for regression in my eyes. He is such an excellent skater and so smart that age alone at a young 35 (September) is not destined to tank him. I won't say he is as efficient with his play as Giordano but he isn't far off.

Oduya was an even better skater but he still hit a wall at 35 y/o. We don't know when it's going to happen for Jensen but one thing certain is that he doesn't have many years in front of him, he's a stop gap.

You think 8 M$ for Giroux and Zetterlund is inflated? 3 M$ for both Kleven and Matinpalo, inflated?

I know there is no "cap concerns" as we can fill the rest of the lineup for cheap, but the POINT was that there's no cap space to sign a Sam Bennett for example (well, if that was possible) or maybe if we let go Giroux like I mentioned.

On top of all that there is the Steve Staios factor. We now have a GM who can improve the team out of nowhere.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill if you think Giroux, Perron and Jensen's regressions are going to make us worse next year. It's either that they won't regress as much as you think or we can easily mitigate that possibility with progress in other areas.

lol "mountain out of a molehill"... This is what I said :

"No choice to give it away this year… and yes we could easily regress next season. All of Giroux, Perron and Jensen will be older, we have no cap space and no prospect pool"

I was replying to a poster who said "we're nowhere near a guarantee to make the playoffs next year". All I said is pure cold straight facts...

- All of Giroux, Perron and Jensen will be older : true or not?

- We have no cap space : as I just explained to IMPROVE the team, true or not?

- We have no prospect pool : true or not?

Personally, my hopes rest almost entirely on the shoulders of Staios and what moves he will continue to pull. And then on Stutzle and Sanderson and how impactful they can become.

Ottawa has a number of good young players who are signed for a few yrs on their roster now & will need to replace a few over the next few yrs & should be in good shape to do that if they can also keep a lot of these guys as they are just starting to mature into a good team. Greig & Pinto have really taken a big step forward in the back half of this season.

Yak - replaces Jensen when Jensen leaves
Merilainen - replaces Forsberg when Forsberg leaves
Halliday - will likely be a 4th line C next yr
Zetterlund - could be an Amadio or Perron replacement
2025 1st rd pick - hopefully they get a good one who can turn into a contributing NHLer
- could be others in the org who might surprise

I like the idea and think we can have some internal replacements, but I am not sure Halliday will be a 4th line C.

It would be great to add some offence from that spot, and we don't have a quick 4th line currently, so maybe, but I expect he may start in the AHL again next year unless he has a great offseason and camp.

I also think we will give our 1st up this year thanks to GMPD's incompetence.

Yak should be ready for an NHL spot in 2 years, but it may be 3rd pairing.

Jensen has one more yr left on his contract & will be 35 yrs old when it is done, that will give Yak a yr in Belleville & he already has an NHL ready body. He won't be on the 3rd pairing because Kleven & Matinpalo could still be a shutdown tandem in two seasons given they are both young. Ott will need some offence from the backend with Jensen leaving & Yak can fill that hole.

I will be very surprised they give up there 1st when there are a few good players who will be available in the high teens & early 20s they could use on a future team. Why give up a pick before you have too?

Halliday has the big NHL body & has shown he has the skillset to be an offensive threat in Belleville this yr leading Belleville in scoring, not all 4th line players need to be speedsters they have plenty of other guys for that. They have plenty of guys who can fill the wings on a 4th line & it wouldn't hurt Ottawa to have a scoring threat on a 4th line. There are a few players who are UFAs on this roster including playing on the 4th line who might not return & will need to be replaced.

I am all for a different look on the 4th and if Halliday can be defensively responsible enough, I am all for it.

Kleven and Manti aren't a shutdown pair right now, they are a sheltered 3rd pairing. We hope they can become shutdown players.

Yak may need to be eased in, so that's why I won't call him a 2nd pairing guy that quick. Let's hope he progresses well.

Because they are 4 wins away (3 after today?) from their highest total of wins in the last 17 seasons. There's no guarantee that they finish as high in the standings next season and the 2026 draft is supposed to quite better than 2025.

 There has never been a guarantee of anything in sports, that's why they play the games.

Pessimism.

What does it have to do with pessimism? The Ottawa Senators have to make a very hard decision due to the idiot some defended here not doing his job properly. They have to make the right choice and the fact that the 2026 draft is much better with a possible generational talent at the top, they just can't risk losing that pick, that would be very irresponsible.

I believe the consensus is there is more talent in next year's draft, so that could be the main reasoning.

The second is that if we have a pick that high, they may hedge against something going wrong next season. Bad injuries, a regression for whatever reason, etc...

They are too good to be picking the 1st OA next yr, that's nothing more than wishful thinking. It's more likely they will be picking somewhere close to where they are now or hopefully even later. We'll see what the Sens do, but I would be surprised if they don't use this yr's pick. Do you have anything positive to say about the team, after all the complaining of missing the playoffs for so long they are very close to being in them?

Sens currently have the 20th OA pick. So if we finish with a later pick (let's say 25th+) next season, I think we'll still be happy because that would mean a very good season, even better than the current one.

And a 25th OA pick is probably easily worth the 20th OA pick from the 2025 draft...

I see no rational reason to not forfeit the pick this year. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it would actually be DUMB.

The Ottawa Senators are the best team ever, they are currently the best, each one of their players is the best at their positions, they have the best prospect pool and the best in class management. No one ever makes a bad thing in this organization I tell you. We were graced by Pierre Dorion's presence for years, unfortunately he wanted to do something else.

Now I hope that you are happy so I can go back talking to people who have their feet solidly on the ground.

I just want to highlight how **** this sentence is.

Imagine if the Sabres have a fan somewhere who will say that when they finally make the playoffs

And even then, missing the playoffs was not really the biggest problem, at least not until 2022-23... the stupid GM we had was the problem... As crazy as it sounds, maybe there's some people who are not even aware of it.

If you forfeit this years pick you are basically writing off another entire draft year. In this scenario Ottawa's first pick would be Florida's 3rd rounder, which will be in the mid/late 80's. That's basically like the 2023 draft where they didn't pick until 108.

There is some logic behind wanting to put a prospect into the system now rather than a year down the line, especially when the pool is in this kind of dire situation.

Furthermore, they have some capital in 2026 to help soften the blow of forfeiting a 1st; you have Buffalo's 2nd and three 3rds. Maybe you even get some amnesty from the league.

Yeah you just take the pick this year.

Not happening. Also, there are way too many variables going into a season to say we're a surefire Playoff team.
Forfeiting this pick is the only logical move. Our prospect pool can wait a year to be stocked as all our core players are in their prime for another 3-4 seasons.

New Jersey literally made the finals, kept their 29th overall pick, and became a bottom 10 team the following year.

We’re not Edmonton or Toronto. We need to prpve we can be consistent playoff team to pull off risky moves like this.

If there is amnesty, it’ll be the 33rd pick in 2026.
