2023-24 Senators Prospect Watch

Our prospect pool is underwhelming to say the least.

1) Sogaard
2) Kleven
3) Merilainen
4) Ostapchuk
5) JBD
6)Guenette
7) Jarventie
8) Donovan
9) Wallberg

I am not even ranking anyone else. I don't even consider the others prospects for the NHL.

Biggest disappointments:
Halliday: 21 year old sophmore at Ohio State. If he wants to play in the NHL he needs to be much better than 8 pts in 11 games.
Sokolov: I was never a big fan but this is his 4th season in the AHL. He's not convincing anyone. -13.
Crookshank: 3rd season in the AHL and not showing anything special. He would be totally invisible in the NHL.

EDit: I added Wallberg. Freshman D with Ohio State looking like has potential.

I'd add Pettersson to your list, probably after Donovan. He has a chance.

But the system is going to be a problem in a year or two. We have a class of guys close to graduating, but very little after that. Turns out blowing/sitting out three straight drafts hurts.

Once guys like Jarventie, Kleven, Sogaard/Merilainen and Ostapchuk graduate or fade away, it becomes pretty dry. A few more interesting guys like Pettersson, Wallberg, Donovan, etc but no blue chip or any clear Top-6/Top-4 potential.

If you have JBD in there, Greig should absolutely be here, he only has played 29 NHL games. JBD has 43 NHL games and should "graduate" first.

Jarventie is our 2nd or 3rd best prospect after Greig and maybe Kleven IMO
With 7 pts in 9 games and a +7, Greig has graduated. JBD is still auditioning. And your opinion of Jarventie is much higher than mine.

I disagree Greig has graduated. I mean count it how you want but hfboards usually waits until they’ve played a full season or 82 games over multiple seasons or they are over 25 years old.
I think it should be earlier but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

He's an extremely good prospect, most underrated here without a doubt
I wish he came over - OHL/AHL or whatever. Doesn't look like he found a place on his current team in SHL.

I think he's perfectly fine where he is now. Points are not looking good, but that's to be expected with the role he has. He'd likely be 1.2-1.4 ppg guy in the CHL, 80 points in 65 games type scorer.

Still 19, Sweden definitely more appealing than AHL for a Swede that age. If the Sens wanted him in the CHL I'm sure they would have been able to get any team to take him with one of their import picks this past year. I'd definitely have liked to see him suiting up for a CHL team.

He's not going to be a scorer at the NHL level, he's a great complimentary player ALA Joseph.

Very big, extremely strong skater, physical, battles all over the ice, has an unbelievable shot and can handle the puck well.

He'll have another very strong showing at the World Juniors, where he'll be in that kind of role, likely complimenting Ostlund or Bystadt in the top 6.

We should look at bringing him to Belleville next season for sure, which will likely be the case barring him being guarantied top minutes in Rogle

As I have been doing these prospect polls for a long time now, I have read a lot of various criterias for graduation over time, but points and +/- is a FIRST

So if Greig had 3 pts and -2, he wouldn't be considered graduated?

That's why people who know anything about science or methodology use black and white criterias, to not end up in no man's land

Pettersson's shot is what will probably allow him to carve out a career. He's got an absolute rocket and can beat a goalie clean from far out.

But if he's one of our top 5 prospects it's only because our pool is one of the worst in the league, as he reasonably projects as a 3rd/4th line forward.

I'd have Greig, Kleven, Ostapchuk, Sogaard and Merilainen over him for sure. Maybe Donovan and Jarventie too, although I'm starting lose my faith in Roby.

Crookshank has played 94 games in the AHL over those 3 seasons, which is closer to the start of his 2nd season.

He has 10 points in his last 9 games. He posted 34 shots over that stretch. So just shy of 4 shots per game.

He led the team in goals last season and is leading again this year

O. Johansson played 03:09 zero points
O. Pettersson not dressed
Donovan zero points
