Dumba sucks. No offense but that’s a terrible take

Herb Brooks didn’t want the best players…he wanted the right ones. Maybe Dumba isn’t even the right one in this scenario….but I don’t go to war with Carlo, Lindholm, Lohrei, Hanifin, eating up 80% of the minutes most games.

Is there any player that has ever been suggested to come here that you haven’t said is terrible?

Have you watched this team play since about Jan. 1?

I don’t know what team you’ve been watching but I’m typically as optimistic as anyone on this board and even I can’t make a case for this team doing anything other than a first round exit.

Is Dumba as good as Carlo?

No…..but Hanifin is….much better!

In this scenario…which likely won’t happen anyway….with Carlo, Hanifin, Lohrei and Lindholm as the 2-5 defensemen….its waaay too soft, IMO.

So add Hanifin to upgrade on Carlo and sign Dumba or a similar guy to do the dirty work.

Plenty of them yes. But Matt Dumba isn’t one of them. He’d be fine as a third pair depth guy but playing top 4 minutes would be bad. Throwing Regula into a playoff series would be worse.

Not anymore, little more physical but just as watered down as the NHL

I’m with ya on Dumba but not as a Carlo replacement. IMO he would be a perfect #5/6 guy. He plays much bigger than he is, sticks up for his teammates and can play the pp or pk and can play in the top 4 as well if called for.

His toughness would be a welcome addition!

Unless they can turn JDB and Forbort into MacKinnon and Makar, I’m not expecting much this spring.

They are going nowhere this playoff. Let's at least add some team players, leadership and toughness. If you are going to lose at minimum don't play like heartless wimps, get some backbone

If Sweeney trades for or signs Hanifin he will be putting himself into cap hell for the next 3 years.
McAvoy- 9.25 M NMC kicks in 2024-25 season until end of 27-28 season
Lindholm - 6.5 M NMC,NTC until the end of 26-27 season
Hanifin - probably 8.25 M with a NMC for at least the first 4 years.
That's 24 million in 3 defensemen add Carlo's 4 M plus 2 scrubs at a 1M
That's 30 M or 34% of your cap.

Again…not easy moves/decisions, but I think most of us agree that the back end needs some muscle next season.

We’d be trading Carlo to upgrade the offense.

Hanifin would be enough of an improvement over Carlo, that they could give a little bit at the 4d spot.

Is it prudent to spend 40+ % of the cap on the defense?

Are you comfortable with 66.666% of the defense being soft, thereby needing McAvoy to continue to need to eat minutes and provide almost all of the physicality?

Maybe Hanifin isn’t the right move if they’re not going to re-shape the rest of the defense.

Dumba has never been the same since his shoulder injury back in like 2019, he's just not a top 4 defenseman anymore. You sign him to play there your're gonna be looking for a replacement by the deadline.

Yeah I don't mind the idea of wanting to add a player that adds that additional element to the back end, just don't think Dumba is that dude. At least not for the top 4.

And I'm pretty against the idea of trading Carlo in general unless you're getting a top 6 center back directly in that trade, RD options are really grim out there. Carlo has his faults offensively, and I do wish my 6'6" defensive defenseman played a little nastier then he does, but end of the day he's a very good 5v5 defender and that's a thing this team can't really afford to lose given how many chances they've been giving up this season.
