If it wasn't for the family connection at the time, they wouldn't of picked him. Stan and company had a thing for either ex Hawks coming or feel good stories to feed the media.
But yes, Colton is looking like a very good pick as a power forward. He's definitely a much different player than Kirby. But he also has the same questions as big bro in regards to staying healthy. So far, so good.

Yeah he’s the number 1 guy from my perspective (AHL doesn’t post ice time but he’s out there in what I’d call the first pair most games and plays all situations.)

Anyone know how EDM’s skating looks? I haven’t been able to watch but it seems the offensive and defensive side of the game have translated for him. So skating is likely the only thing holding him back next year unless he’s improved on it.
Also, is there any one of these kids that can play the right side? Korchinski, Kaiser, Vlasic, Phillips, EDM and Allan are listed as LD as of now. And Jones may well be the only capable RD next year since I have a feeling Murphy will get get heavy attention at the deadline.

Really hope Colton Dach stays healthy. Literally the exact type of player the Hawks need in the future. Big, strong, goes to the net, can skate, grit, has solid enough hockey sense and has enough skill to hang with the top dogs. So far he's developing quite nicely in the AHL.

Saarela (wrist). Hardman (Shoulder). Healy and Horwath still in concussion protocol.
