Late start for Beanpot Game #2 at TD Garden, after Game #1 ran into shootout time then the usual pre-game distractions. Puck drop for the nightcap came @ 8:30 PM Eastern. Gonna be LOTS of tired little hockey-playing girls in the Boston area classrooms on Thursday. :boredom:

After Period 1 of the women's 2024 Beanpot Championship Game, Boston U 0 - Northeastern 0. NU has the slight edge in SOGs at 8-7, a good reflection of how tight the team defensive play on each side has been. The Huskies killed two minor penalties in that period - including one in the closing minutes - while the Terriers survived a single PK.

End of the 2nd period, Huskies 1-0 after NU junior forward Skylar Irving scored on an aggressive play in the final minute. Very physical game, and the referees are letting go all but potentially dangerous infractions. SOGs so far are 19-17 in favor of Northeastern.

End of 60 minutes, Northeastern 1 - Boston U 1. The Terriers' goalie was pulled with 3 minutes left, and BU's senior forward Catherine Foulem tied it up with 58.1 seconds remaining in regulation. Headed to 3-on-3 OT play.

Official attendance @ TD Garden = 10,633. And they brought the energy for the Championship.

In the first Beanpot semifinals game, Northeastern opened the scoring then had to tie it up in the 3rd period before senior forward Gunnarwolf Fontaine scored the GWG in 3-on-3 OT with a final score of 3-2 over Harvard. So the Huskies move on to meet tonight's BC v BU winner on Feb. 12th, while the Crimson wait for the other loser.

In the other men's Beanpot semi, BU - or should I say, freshman phenom forward Macklin Celebrini - came out hot early, and seemed to be cruising to a tourney championship berth in the 3rd period with a 4-1 lead. But BC finally turned on their own jets & potted two quick goals to make a game of it. The Terriers held on & defeated the Eagles for the first time this season with a 4-3 regulation victory.

Latest USCHO Bracketology addresses the issue with having UMass hosting and also currently having 3 HEA #1 seeds:
BRACKETOLOGY: Three Hockey East No. 1 seeds, UMass falling to a No. 4 seed complicate this week's pairings beyond belief - College Hockey | USCHO.com
Providence, R.I.
1. Boston College
8. Denver
9. Minnesota
16. Minnesota State
Maryland Heights, Mo.
4. Maine
7. Michigan State
10. Providence
15. RIT
Sioux Falls, S.D.
3. North Dakota
6. Quinnipiac
12. Michigan
14. Cornell
Springfield, Mass.
2. Boston University
5. Wisconsin
11. Western Michigan
13, Massachusetts
Even though BU and UMass are both in HEA, they could play each other in 1st round since they are five HEA teams currently in the field:

I've got my tickets for the Maryland Heights, MO Regional. Guess I need to dust off my Maine & Mich State jerseys in case the USCHO Bracket Boys are right. Though I'd REALLY prefer to see BU on my hometown ice. :crossfing

In the "Small Victories, Big Moments" category ... Stick taps are due to the Holy Cross Crusaders DI women's team and their 5th-year head coach Katie Lachapelle for ending their program's 18-game losing streak vs. their Hockey East conference rival Providence Friars on Friday night. The HCC women's varsity program started play in 1999, so this conference tie (plus the extra point for the shootout victory) is a very big deal for them. Now 0-18-1 vs. the Lady Friars ... onward & upward, 'Saders! :cheer:

Honorable Mention goes to the Brown University DI women's team, who defeated ECAC conference foes the Harvard Crimson 3-1 on Friday to earn Brown's first playoff home game since 2006. The Brown Bears' offense came in the form of a hat trick from sophomore forward Jade Iginla, who is the daughter of former NHL star & Hall-of-Famer Jarome Iginla.

The 2024 men's DI Beanpot Consolation Game is through 20 minutes at TD Garden, with #1 ranked BC & Harvard tied at zeroes. The Eagles have dominated on offense, and their No. 1 nationally ranked PK denied the Crimson twice in the 1st period.

BC finally broke the scoreless tie about 12 minutes into the 2nd period of the men's Beanpot Consolation after a wild offensive sequence. The goal was scored by the #1 national DI scorer, freshman foward Gabe Perreault (13-31=44 pts). Then BC's sophomore forward Oskar Jellvik and another freshman forward Ryan Leonard scored one each in the closing minute.

3-0 Eagles over Harvard after 40 minutes of play. The Crimson killed off two minor infractions during that period to keep the game close before the flood gates opened.

Final Score = Boston College 5 - Harvard 0. The shutout was earned by freshman goalie Jan Korec in his first college start. The Eagles' 4th tally was unassisted, netted on an end-to-end rush by senior D-man Eamon Powell. BC's scoring was wrapped up on a goal by Will Smith (yet another freshman forward). Boston College played just like the #1 team in the country should. :cheer:

Period 2 was a wild one @ TD Garden. Northeastern's grad forward Matt Demelis tied the game in the 6th minute, after two BU players collided in the Northeastern end which led to an odd man rush the other way. Then the teams traded tallies 29 seconds apart from the Terriers' sophomore forward Devin Kaplan & the Huskies' junior forward Justin Hryckowian. Then BU's sophomore defender Lane Hutson gave his team their 3rd lead with just 7 seconds left in the frame. End of two, BU 3 - NEU 2. Northeastern killed the sole penalty assessed so far.

North & south movement continued in the 3rd period with each team getting their chances. Northeastern's sophomore forward Jack Williams finally tied things up.again in the middle of the period on the man advantage. BU was buzzing in the closing minutes but could not convert the energy into a game winner. End of regulation, 3-3, going to OT in Boston.

The 2024 men's Beanpot Champions are ... the repeat champions Northeastern University Huskies!. GWG by senior forward Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, the first Huskies' lead of the game & the one that counted. Final Score = NU 4 - BU 3 in overtime. NEU has now won 5 of the last 6 Beanpots. Congrats to them.

Love to see Michigan State hockey good again. Final two games against Wisconsin are going to be great! MSU beat them twice earlier in the year, I could see MSU taking the B1G.
