Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Just to be clear, I'm not particularly interested in Duchene, just wanted to post that because it sounded like the Toffoli situation.

What we really need is some winger help for Will.

There are better options:

Best case scenario we land Marner and move Toffoli down to Smith's wing. The price may be too high and all the contenders will also be trying to throw money at him.

2nd case best scenario: sign Boeser.

other realistic options:

UFA:
Claude Giroux - probably won't leave the east coast, but he's a UFA that's still highly productive and has leadership qualities. Will likely want to go cup chasing if Ottawa doesn't resign him.
Nikolaj Ehlers - not the greatest option, but he's available.

Trade candidates:
Conor Garland - UFA next offseason. Vancouver will probably want a large haul for him at the deadline.
Jordan Eberle - UFA next offseason, iffy defensively and getting old but shouldn't cost a lot to obtain.
Oliver Bjorkstrand - UFA next offseason, will probably cost a lot more to obtain than Eberle considering what Tampa paid to get him.
Lawson Crouse - 2 years remaining on contract, rumored to be on the trade market
JJ Peterka - RFA, rumored to be on the trade market. Will cost a lot to obtain.

Longshot options:

Trevor Zegras - will cost too much and isn't really worth pursuing.
Jason Robertson - on the trade market supposedly, will cost far too much than he's worth
Alex Kilorn - overpaid and getting old, 2 years left on contract.

not really 2nd line material, but may be available:

Charlie Coyle
Alex Tuch
Nick Aube-Kubel
Anthony Mantha
Kevin Labanc (lol)

I don't see Marner as a best case scenario. If we're going to bring in an established talent and sign them to a term within the window where we expect the team to make the playoffs, I want it to be a guy that has a track record of being a productive goal scorer in the playoffs. I'd take Tavares or Bennett or Nelson or Boeser. Giroux and Eberle would be borderline for me. The others I just wouldn't bother with.

I would 100% see what the Robo market is. Dude is still only 25.

Eklund and Ferraro?

I would bet that if for whatever reason Robertson was on the trade market for our team, we'd be taking Dumba with him and any cap we send back has to be at least good for what they make. Ferraro seems like someone they don't need when they have Lindell, Harley, and Bichsel. Eklund would make sense to be involved in a deal like this though.

We don't really have anything else to offer them. Maybe Shakir, who looked good on the right side, and Eklund and something?

Having had to sit through 82 games of Lawson Crouse this year, please god no.

Maybe he had a down year but he brought nothing to Utah this year.

If we're making him a 3C of sorts, I would agree. I don't think I'd care for him if the intent was to slot him in the top six.
Yeah, I was thinking he might be a good fit on the third line with Wennberg and Graf. Honestly, he might be good with Smith too. I wouldn’t want him in my top-6 if I’m trying to make the playoffs at this point but beggars can’t be choosers and he’s a guy that jumped to mind in terms of being a middle-six caliber guy who has size and vet savvy and can play center or wing. Might be able to take him off Colorado’s hands if they need a cap dump.

I get that Eklund is not a core piece and probably the best trade chip the Sharks have that can help a team now (which most teams are looking for), but he is literally the only player with any skill that can play F1 on the forecheck. I get those players are easier to replace but if Eklund is moved there is a giant hole the Sharks need to replace with no prospects in the system that can play as F1’s.

Robertson is a non difference maker who will want to be paid like one. No thanks. There's a reason he wasn't chosen for Team USA.
I'm a subscriber to the "robertson has already peaked" camp. I think it's pretty telling that he and Hintz had career best years playing with an old Pavelski. That line was elite and a great example of the total being more than the sum of its parts.

Kinda like home Lindolm got propped up for being on that elite Gaudreau Lindholm Tkachuk line

Yep, paying this guy 11M+ AAV until he's 35 is an absolute sucker's bet. And you have to give up assets on top of that?
