Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

So many bang average names on that trade list.

I find it amusing that we're willing to overlook the holes in their games in a way we won't do for our own players/prospects.

Byram is the one I find most funny. We have Dickinson, Mukh, Cagnoni on LD - all of whom I'd rather have a chance to succeed/develop this year before we trade assets for another.

Stay the course.

I think we need a Walman replacement/upgrade to support the continued growth of the team. Celebrini is so damn good at making himself available he exits the zone as well as a center but McDavid and Mackinnon. For the other 40 minutes per game, we’ll need to have at least one PMD. RHD would be better, but they’re seldom available. I actually think Dickinson-Byram-Muk is a decently well rounded left hand d group. You could probably live with something like Ristolainen-Ceci-kid on the right side. We’d be forward heavy, but that d projects better than Reilly-Tanev, OEL-Carlo.

In terms of positional value, I slightly prefer Dobson, but age, style of play, and expected contract are strong advantages in Byram’s favor. Dobson is bigger, but I think Byram is quite a bit better defensively (at bang average, not saying he’s great).

Trading for Miller seems less efficient when Dickinson and Mukhamadullin are probably top four caliber defensemen soon enough for this team’s timeline. If we’re going to invest assets and term, it needs to be on the right side. I think all of the holes in the lineup could be filled in free agency but that’ll require a decent amount of luck.
So no Schaefer if he falls then because he's left handed?

Questioning whether K'Andre Miller is a top 4 D is insane. Some of you act like there are a dozen top four defensemen in the entire league.

I don’t have confidence in any of Dickinson, Miller, or Mukhamadullin to play the right side effectively when asked. Schaefer doesn’t have that issue in my mind. Has nothing to do with handedness and everything to do with position.

1) Mukhamadullin literally played his best hockey this year on the right side with Ferraro so that argument is out the window.

2) What have you seen from Schaefer other than just vibes that makes it not an issue for him but an issue for all of the others?

He also got injured again. It’s hard to rely on Muk when he’s been injured so often and has very little on tape.

Schaefer clears all those guys in terms of skating and decision making that is more conducive for effective off-side play imo.

We could honestly just fill out the roster with former Rangers who Grier would have familiarity with. Get Kreider and Copp as cheap cap dumps to flank Smith on the 2nd line, KAM and/or Lindgren as the big addition on defense and sign DeAngelo to run PP1.

K'andre Miller would be a spectacular add. if grier can land him without giving up too much, it would be spectacular. I would have no problem giving him big term and $$$, and not worrying about one of the top 4 slots. Dick has high end potential on the left, but I would never hesitate to get a clear solid top 4 LHD for fear of replacing or displacing Mukh. Miller>>> Mukh.

Maybe Grier can trade for both dobson and Miller (package edm 1st, dallas 1st, ott 2nd, col 2nd, Ferraro, Cagnoni, Musty, Haltunnen, and take on any bad contracts NYI or NYR have...). Such a coup this summer, along with a few good UFA signings, specifically wingers with size, would instantly put the sharks into the conversation of dark horse PO contenders.

Dobson, Miller, Dickinson, Mukh, Liljgren, and Desharnais is not a great top 6, but its WAY better than this past yea, and has great size on the back end. Futhermore, the 1-2-3 at C is set. Eklund, Toffoli, Graf can be three of the top 9 wings, so we need maybe 2 UFA Center/winger signings (say Granlund and Bennett), and it could be a pretty exciting year.

p.s.: I dont see this as very likely. I think Grier is not ready to 'go for it', so I would be surprised to see him add more than one legit long term player this summer, specifically giving up any futures to do it. But, we can dream....

I don’t know… going to need some Boston in there too. Any of them went to BU?

God, I forgot about that. What an absurd season.
Jarry this season had some crazy stat like in 20 of 22 starts he got for the penguins in net he gave up a goal on the first shot attempt he saw.

I have to find the exact stat, but I heard it during the season and it was cartoon-ish-ly bad.

Didn't Schaefer also get injured and miss this season?

I'm not saying that any of those guys can or can't make it on their off side, but more pointing out that proclaiming that Schaefer assuredly can do it and the others can't is pretty bad logic because the correct answer is that we simply don't know on any of them.

Yes he did but Schaefer’s in a much different place than Mukhamadullin now isn’t he? If you are going to go off the whole we don’t know bit then we shouldn’t be moving assets and committing term for unknowns. We should try the guys we have in the fold or pay to get proven commodities.

I’m not going into this draft thinking that Schaefer will be an option for the Sharks and would be ecstatic if he did become one. And for the guys we do have, setting them up on their natural side is the best way forward.
