Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Grier targets?
  • Rasmus Andersson probably #1 - feels like a better version of Liljegren, only one year on the contract = price might be low enough, and we could re-sign him as a bridge #1RD or very solid #2RD on our roster. No idea what CGY would want and if we want to give it up.
  • Connor Murphy would be a decent get if he were FA, but I'm not sure we trade with CHI.
  • Byram (if there's a trade there, might not be based on need )
  • Similar flavor, K'Andre Miller, some would love it some would hate it
  • Marchesseault, honestly might work, despite most of us hating the idea, but not sure what we'd have/want to trade to NSH

I would say there’s less than 0 percent chance Marchessault agrees to come to SJ

Will rule out trading real assets for anyone over the age of 25 for the most part. Marchesseault has way too much term at his age to make sense (along with the bad blood from the time in Vegas).

I could see a NYR deal for Miller and Kreider being an option, but not much else (and Ferraro would be going the other way for NYR in that situation most likely). Otherwise, most of that list doesn't seem to be where I expect Grier to be shopping.

Once a goaltender’s weakness gets exposed their spiral is incredibly fast.
This is a huge problem in the current NHL. Scouting is currently too good and good, non-star goalies get exposed after a couple of seasons. A few years ago when Matt Murray was playing for the Leafs, broadcasters were talking about how he had been so heavily scouted that every team in the league knew that his glove was weak and how he was not going to be the solution in net. I would not be surprised that this was the case when he was acquired earlier from Ottawa, which is why he was bad for them and why Pittsburgh so easily walked away from him.

I know this conversation is about Martin Jones, which is a different issue. I am sure he was a victim of modern scouting, as well as the equipment change, but there was also an additional death spiral. We all know poor defense can cause goalies to lose confidence and begin to really suck, but also, poor goaltending can cause the defense to overcompensate and end up out of position making life miserable for he goalie. I will always say this is the death spiral we saw with Martin Jones.

Martin was the same way. Once word got out how slow his reaction time glove hand, it was over for him.

Rasmus Andersson does seem like an interesting target for us to add as a bridge #1RD, I just think the price for him is going to be too high especially if they want to hold onto him until the trade deadline. I really like the idea of adding Peterka. Byram also makes sense for us, however as you said it's hard to find a trade that makes sense as I don't think we have many pieces that the Sabres are looking for that would be available for trade, probably just Eklund. I think both Kreider and Miller could both be targets for Grier especially considering his relationship with Drury, I could see them getting a deal done for either player. Really doubt Marchesseault has any interest at all in joining us (he has a 15 team NTC), really seems like a guy that would only join a contender.

Woof! Not a tantalizing list to work with

Rasmus Andersson is really interesting but only if he comes with a reasonable extension. I like Peterka but again, unless he’s coming for futures (which Buffalo shouldn’t do) then it’s just shuffling the deck.

More I think about this, the more I can see it.

Miller (extended at 6 years $6.5M) + Kreider (2 years remaining at $6.5M)
for
Ferraro + Colorado 2nd + Gushchin

Rangers clear $10M in cap space to sign Cuylle + UFA upgrades and get a #4/5 LD to replace Miller and stay in go for it mode. San Jose gets a sizable upgrade in a true playoff caliber top 4 D-Man plus a nice mentor for Musty/Chernyshov to watch and learn under in Kreider (and also a LW to play with size and finishing to play with Smith).

Trading for Miller seems less efficient when Dickinson and Mukhamadullin are probably top four caliber defensemen soon enough for this team’s timeline. If we’re going to invest assets and term, it needs to be on the right side. I think all of the holes in the lineup could be filled in free agency but that’ll require a decent amount of luck.

I may not be familiar enough with Peterka's game, but as a 5'11" LW scoring just under PPG he feels pretty duplicative of Eklund.

Now, maybe Grier thinks Ekky isn't part of the core and builds some trade around Peterka, Byram for Eklund and (some center we don't have??) ... Wennberg? but given Warso's comments on Spittin' Chiclets about being set at C, feels like Wenny isn't moving. So there's probably no trade there.

Andersson feels possible though, I just don't know what the other side of the trade is, eg what Calgary would be asking and how big the market is.

Dang why all of you gotta bring up old stuff I went bankrupt by continuously betting my life savings on a Martin Jones redemption arc I desperately wanted to see happen
I wanted to send him into the sun before 2018 closed....the organization obviously felt differently 😅

Listened to the Warso interview on spittin chiclets. He still has 1 year left on his deal, and I doubt his current team wants to move him, but Warso talked up Andrew Peeke on the USA team.

He is a RD on the Bruins… might be something, might be nothing.

He also talked up Keith Yandle, who has a contact with Ekblad.
