Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

My fav team is the leafs. Second being the sharks. Would the sharks be interested in Mathews and marner?

Putting aside Matthews, if at some point before the time expires for Leafs to give Marner an 8 year contract, Marner's camp tells the Leafs he will not re-sign, and tells the Leafs he wants to sign with the Sharks, and all sides already work out that Marner will immediately sign an 8 year deal with the Sharks for whatever his camp and Grier agree to, then I'd be willing to trade a 2025 or 2026 7th for his rights to accomplish that. But that's about it.

19 goal pace in the playoffs this season…
Pretty rough when his playoff career is 30-ish and dropping like a rock this past run. They’ll still rightly ask for the moon but I’d only consider signing him when he hits free agency if his demands aren’t ridiculous and he can be fit into it (which I doubt by then).

It is the extremely rare goal-scorer who can still score at the same rate in the playoffs. So far, Matthews has shown he is not one of those players.

So, for these players to succeed, they need to fall back on other talents and other players.

Lebrun talked about Marner potentially going to places like Anaheim, LA, and Vegas. I would consider any of that a win for the Sharks if it happens lol
Vegas would need to make deals to make room for Marner... wonder if there is a deal there that would interest the sharks.

Same thing applies to AM34 as Marner. Yes, their playoff performance isn't stellar, but it's amazing what getting out of a franchise that has a losing culture and toxic fanbase/media could do for a player.
I think both are to be avoided given what it would cost to acquire them and pay them. It’s definitely in Marner’s best interest to move on from Toronto. If I was Matthews, I’d force my way out too. It’s just an awful environment that’s only getting worse with more ownership level meddling. It’s in everyone’s best interest for the Leafs and their core forwards to move on but I’m sure some will take longer than others.

So, I was thinking: I've been batting back and forth between "going for it" with $$ and term and just signing vet "filler" on 1-2 yer deals to wait for the kids.... What do you guys think of doing both?

Like, sign 1 or 2 guys to term and $$$, and then another 2 guys like marchand or Giroux short term as filler? It would be nice to come out of this summer with another long term vet building block in place. Even if we stink again, at least the pieces can start getting assembled. Maybe one Dman and one Wing for term, especially if the Dman is traded for.

York, Miller, Byram, Dobson, Nemec... There are a fair number of RFA D that grier could target and then sign to term. It would be nice to get at least one defender in place for the next 5+ years. Even if the sharks drafted Schaefer and voerhoff to go along with mukh and dick, they would still need at least 1 top pair vet D, as you cannot count on the kids fully for at least 4+ years.

The same for the forwards. Celly, smith, ek, (misa), graf, cherny, musty, bystedt, etc is a great core. But, they will need a few vets to complement that crew. Be nice to get one in this summer...

Are we signing Marchand to 3x$18M or something? Dude is a piece of shit, but he’s a winner, he hand-picked Florida, and he’s the only ever played for east coast contenders. If we’re just rosterbaiting, sure I’d be game for 3x$18M as I think he’d be a quality linemare for Smith. But other than that, it’s not happening in the real world.

Giroux is 37 and playing in his home province, having never won the cup. I didn’t check but I bet his career earnings are north of $85M. Something tells me his decisions will be based on two things (proximity to Ontario and cup readiness) we fall near the bottom on. Also, he’s 5’11- doesn’t that eliminate him from your perspective.

Agree on getting one 5+ year solution on D. Byram is my top choice, but Buff needs current players (RHD or C). Taking into their needs and are available assets, our best shot is moving futures in a three way trade. K’Andre is probably a decent choice give the Rags needs for cap room. He’d be our best dman, but Dickinson may offer a lot of what he does. I don’t love Dobson, but again he’d be our top D (and best RHD asset by a huge amount). If he’s available (not a guarantee), I think they’ll want a single good asset, not three solid ones.

I think we have 6 b assets (Bystedt, Musty, 4 20-40 picks) that can be used. I’m probably fine spending any three of them for a long-term top 4 Dman solution that has a hope of being a top pair guy (Byram, Dobson for sure).

Nemec would be a nice pickup; but like Jiricek, not sure they’re ideal for us.

I personally think we have enough vet presence on this team that we really do not need to try to specifically get more. Obviously if there is a great deal for someone like Marner or whatever in FA or a trade, we should not turn down the opportunity. However I really want us to avoid filling the team with more short term depth or vet players unless we actually need them.

At this point I think its time to truly turn the team over to the youngsters, and start to find out who is actually worthy of a long term spot on this roster while we now shift our focus to finding specific long term players to add to this roster.

We have to spend some money anyways to hit the floor, I just hope we spend it on a couple big ticket players that can actually contribute for the next 4+ years while we move into being a competitive team, instead of wasting 2-4 mil per player on several more nothing bottom 6 players, or fringe top 6 players because we think we need to have a bunch of useless vets on the team to create some nebulous amount of leadership or good examples for the young players.

I want spots filled with guys like Chernyshov, Musty, Gush, Graf, Dickinson, Lund, Bystedt, Cagnoni etc instead of guys that have already proven their uselessness like Grundstrom, Dellandrea, Desharnais etc. Let the young guys sink or swim, that way we can plan better for the near term future on what deficiencies we truly have in our roster.
