Today's SJS Morning Tide podcast has guest Sheng Peng talking roster for next season.
What you said makes sense. With the season all but over, I've been wondering who is 'In' and who is 'Out' for next seasons roster.
RFA's
- Kostin
- Kovalenko
- Gregor
- Thompson
- Muhk
- Gregor
UFA's
- Rutta
- Shuldt
- Fourgiev
Some other notable RFA's
- Goose
- Bordeleau
Additionally, the last retention on Burns is up after this season.
Here's who I think will remain/sign new contracts: Thompson, Muhk, Shuldt, maybe Kovalenko? It feels like only 1 of Goose or Bords may remain with the organization. But man, there's going to be a decent amount of roster competition coming into next year.
Both have places in the NHL, despite Hodges’s insistence they’re both not, and neither is ready to just move on from opportunities.I'm curious what Bordeleau and Gushchin are feeling for themselves cuz there's a part of me that would appreciate having them with the Cuda as AHL lifers like a Poturalski and get some cracks with the Sharks at like 25yo. Bordeleau would be more likely of the two but he could go to Europe. Gushchin probably just heads to the KHL and comes back as a UFA.
It's pretty clear that fair or not, the organization doesn't think much of either player. I would understand and expect both moving on.I'm curious what Bordeleau and Gushchin are feeling for themselves cuz there's a part of me that would appreciate having them with the Cuda as AHL lifers like a Poturalski and get some cracks with the Sharks at like 25yo. It's a coin flip if he ever does, thoughIt's pretty clear that fair or not, the organization doesn't think much of either player. I would understand and expect both moving on.
In some ways, I'd be more optimistic with Bordeleau. Gushchin made the adjustments he needs to, but just isn't good enough to hack it in the NHL. If the switch ever flips for Bordeleau, he could become an NHLer.

And potentially 6 of those 7 will be at minimum 50/50 split between ahl and nhl. I believe graf will be the only 1 with a guaranteed spot on the nhl roster next season.I tend to agree, though I will say Gush is somewhat hampered by the fact that we only have had 5-7 offensive forwards at any given time and all but Wennberg are small. I think on a heavy team that plays three scoring lines, he might be able to be a complimentary winger. He works hard and is committed, but at 5'9 and 160 on a team that can't possess the puck, he's non-viable.
More likely than not he ends up in Russia, but I'm rooting for him. With Lund, Cherny, Musty, Bystedt, Graf, Ostapchuk, and Cardwell looking like more NHL-caliber guys with 4-7 inches and 25-60 pounds on him, he's got too much competition.
I would keep him on an AHL contract if we could, but for his own sake, better to try and break in elsewhere.
Lmao yeah the reason their NHL careers are over is because of me. Sharks management has wanted to call them up so many times but were repeatedly convinced not to by my HFBoards posts. Both have places in the NHL, despite Hodges’s insistence they’re both not, and neither is ready to just move on from opportunities.

Yeah, that’s exactly what I said. Nothing gets by you, my dude.Lmao yeah the reason their NHL careers are over is because of me. Sharks management has wanted to call them up so many times but were repeatedly convinced not to by my HFBoards posts.
I mean he doesn’t hate the Russians but all three of those guys might be gone anyway because they aren’t great. Eklund also I doubt gets flipped. Seems like Grier and Warsofsky both love him. His work ethic, two way play, and his little bit of pest personality all are exactly what the sharks are looking for more of.Warzo hates the Russians so you can kiss Kostin, Goosh, and Kovalenko goodbye. Muk is one of Grier's guys so he should be safe and Bords I can almost guarantee gets a "change of scenery" trade. I also think Eky gets flipped for a similar value defensemen if they do not get Schaefer, also not one of Grier's guys.
I think both Goose and Bordeleau both made cases for at least a look post deadline considering we're playing guys like Gregor. Ostapchuk should have immediately been assigned to the AHL when the trade happened as he earned even less of a right to be thrown onto the NHL roster. Grier, for whatever reason, does seem like he gets a little tunnel vision for the players he likes and the ones he doesn't. He also seems like he wants to erase everything to do with Wilson's tenure. In the end, Gushchin hasn't been able to adjust to the NHL, Kostin has never belonged in the NHL, and Kovalenko has shown very little and likely doesn't have any real room to grow. None of them have made a case for themselves and are all replaceable.
Makes you wonder about his interview which clearly wasn’t an issue.Well, looks like Kovalenko is done in SJ. Roster spot opening up...
Maybe he talked to Martin Kaut lolMakes you wonder about his interview which clearly wasn’t an issue.
They couldn't get a crack at the NHL on the worst team in the league. What makes anyone think they'll have better luck elsewhere?Don’t think that was what he was saying, lol. He’s saying they still have a crack at the NHL in a different org, even though you disagree.
Has Grier been wrong about the players he inherited, though? Not a single dumped prospect has turned into anything or looks likely to, and the guys Grier has kept have at least had promise up to a point (Cardwell). I see no indication that Eklund is on the outs.I think both Goose and Bordeleau both made cases for at least a look post deadline considering we're playing guys like Gregor. Eklund holding that up like Atlas.I have no idea why Grier seems so eager to purge all of Junior's draft picks. Just look at this treasure trove of hidden gems.
