Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

With the season all but over, I've been wondering who is 'In' and who is 'Out' for next seasons roster.

RFA's
- Kostin
- Kovalenko
- Gregor
- Thompson
- Muhk
- Gregor

UFA's
- Rutta
- Shuldt
- Fourgiev

Some other notable RFA's
- Goose
- Bordeleau

Additionally, the last retention on Burns is up after this season.

Here's who I think will remain/sign new contracts: Thompson, Muhk, Shuldt, maybe Kovalenko? It feels like only 1 of Goose or Bords may remain with the organization. But man, there's going to be a decent amount of roster competition coming into next year.

What you said makes sense.

RFA's: Thompson, Mukh are guaranteed, I think. Kostin is a no. Gregor and Kovalenko are maybes -- I really don't know how Grier is seeing it. At least Gregor brings speed. Kovalenko had small flashes but otherwise looks like a JAG pressbox guy, so who knows.

I've been saying and I continue to say that I think Bords and Goose are done with the Sharks. They have no trade value, unless it's some player swap, so we'll see them elsewhere either by trade or by free agency/going back to Russia.

UFA's: I think they sign Schuldt for the Cuda and let Fourgiev and Rutta walk.

I'm guessing based on his comments that Grier really does want to go hard at UFA's / offer sheets / trades this year and I think he'll give a lot of chances to the younger kids (Graf, Bystedt, Thompson, even Cags, Cherny, now Lund) to truly make the squad next year.

The coin will stand on its edge.
There's actually a paper about this

I'm curious what Bordeleau and Gushchin are feeling for themselves cuz there's a part of me that would appreciate having them with the Cuda as AHL lifers like a Poturalski and get some cracks with the Sharks at like 25yo. Bordeleau would be more likely of the two but he could go to Europe. Gushchin probably just heads to the KHL and comes back as a UFA.

Both have places in the NHL, despite Hodges’s insistence they’re both not, and neither is ready to just move on from opportunities.

It's pretty clear that fair or not, the organization doesn't think much of either player. I would understand and expect both moving on.

In some ways, I'd be more optimistic with Bordeleau. Gushchin made the adjustments he needs to, but just isn't good enough to hack it in the NHL. If the switch ever flips for Bordeleau, he could become an NHLer.

It's a coin flip if he ever does, though

I tend to agree, though I will say Gush is somewhat hampered by the fact that we only have had 5-7 offensive forwards at any given time and all but Wennberg are small. I think on a heavy team that plays three scoring lines, he might be able to be a complimentary winger. He works hard and is committed, but at 5'9 and 160 on a team that can't possess the puck, he's non-viable.

More likely than not he ends up in Russia, but I'm rooting for him. With Lund, Cherny, Musty, Bystedt, Graf, Ostapchuk, and Cardwell looking like more NHL-caliber guys with 4-7 inches and 25-60 pounds on him, he's got too much competition.

I would keep him on an AHL contract if we could, but for his own sake, better to try and break in elsewhere.

And potentially 6 of those 7 will be at minimum 50/50 split between ahl and nhl. I believe graf will be the only 1 with a guaranteed spot on the nhl roster next season.

So they might not even have any room for bords and gush in the ahl even if they want to keep them.

Lmao yeah the reason their NHL careers are over is because of me. Sharks management has wanted to call them up so many times but were repeatedly convinced not to by my HFBoards posts.

Don’t think that was what he was saying, lol. He’s saying they still have a crack at the NHL in a different org, even though you disagree.

Warzo hates the Russians so you can kiss Kostin, Goosh, and Kovalenko goodbye. Muk is one of Grier's guys so he should be safe and Bords I can almost guarantee gets a "change of scenery" trade. I also think Eky gets flipped for a similar value defensemen if they do not get Schaefer, also not one of Grier's guys.

I mean he doesn’t hate the Russians but all three of those guys might be gone anyway because they aren’t great. Eklund also I doubt gets flipped. Seems like Grier and Warsofsky both love him. His work ethic, two way play, and his little bit of pest personality all are exactly what the sharks are looking for more of.

In the end, Gushchin hasn't been able to adjust to the NHL, Kostin has never belonged in the NHL, and Kovalenko has shown very little and likely doesn't have any real room to grow. None of them have made a case for themselves and are all replaceable.

I think both Goose and Bordeleau both made cases for at least a look post deadline considering we're playing guys like Gregor. Ostapchuk should have immediately been assigned to the AHL when the trade happened as he earned even less of a right to be thrown onto the NHL roster. Grier, for whatever reason, does seem like he gets a little tunnel vision for the players he likes and the ones he doesn't. He also seems like he wants to erase everything to do with Wilson's tenure.

They couldn't get a crack at the NHL on the worst team in the league. What makes anyone think they'll have better luck elsewhere?

Has Grier been wrong about the players he inherited, though? Not a single dumped prospect has turned into anything or looks likely to, and the guys Grier has kept have at least had promise up to a point (Cardwell). I see no indication that Eklund is on the outs.

The problem is that the Wilson team were running on reputation and fumes by the end, drafting myopically with an eye for skilled guys who would turn into home runs (virtually all of which would flop because they didn't have enough skill) and totally unable to face up to the reality that the team was in the dumpster and needed to be stripped to the foundation and rebuilt from scratch. There was almost nothing left worth keeping.
