Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Bettman laughing while reading these posts:

"No coin flips for the Sharks after last year, Congratulations Blackhawks for #1 overall pick"

Then...

Blackhawks choose Misa,

Bettman "What the hell was that?? Sharks has to forfeit their #2 overall pick to the Chicago Blackhawks, because Chicago didn't see Schaefer on the board"

Blackhawks choose Hagens

#3rd overall team and all the other teams agree to move one spot up for the Sharks to choose #3rd overall, because of Bettman.

Bettman "Sharks are banned from the 2025 draft"

What are the odds of this?

Invest in your scouting staff, and that means qa/qc their results, and i think you will see results. also have to keep a successful minor system that teaches the young to learn and grow, see the 80's Sherbrooke Candiens system, they kept 1-2 permamnet AHL'rs who would create a winning environement, and teach the kids.....btw Lund should be sent down......

Why the hell should Lund be sent down? He's been one of our best forwards since signing. Helped create another goal last game.

Have you watched Cam Lund's games this year with Northeastern? the guy is super lazy. Invisible out there while others have already been paying their dues.........Oooooh Barracuda......

Lund was really good in the Northeastern games I watched this season btw. Definitely took a huge step this season. And is clearly one of the best 12 Sharks forwards right now.
Thats why northeastern had such a bad record and he was their go to guy? I watched him play this season where he stand still and watched never moving expecting soomeone to give him the puck. Use him as trade bait.......terrible, you will see.......

Lund could still be trade bait or a complete bust but that doesn't change the fact he's currently performing like he belongs in the NHL.

I think the possibility of Schaefer dropping to 3 is real.
Besides tge BH's, it depends on who jumps up to 2. I cam see a Buffalo passing on a LD

The only thing I want to contribute here is that due to all of the discussions about probability, I am utterly convinced we will finish last, yet somehow end up with the fifth pick anyway.

Why are we talking about odds of the lottery, everyone knows because san jose won the battle of 1st overalls by drafting the better player, bettman and company will let chicago win the lottery and also give them san jose 2nd overall to even out the draft selections.

I think what happens to a lot of fans is what happens to me...they get stuck evaluating prospects using the rubrics of the past. There's no chance Cam Lund makes any of those contending Sharks's teams...he'd have been AHL-bound, if not destined for another season ripening at uni.

But this roster is horrible, and Lund can make a case that he deserves to be here...and even if he's not, strictly speaking, a top-12 forward, what's the harm in playing him? Haven't the Sharks gotten enough looks of Grundstrom/Dellandrea/Goodrow? Even Kovalenko is starting to wear on me...

There is never an appropriate time for that because it is never true!

You can say anything you like about the topic of probability but arguing their most likely scenario is to end up 3rd is also objectively incorrect.
Assuming they finish last, their most likely scenario is to end up 3rd. This is an objective fact. You are missing something along the way if you arrive at any other conclusion…

Are you referring to the concept of regression to the mean, or something? Regression means finding relationships between dependent and independent variables. If you mean taking large enough sample sizes so that the averages converges to the mean, then yes.

Because I don't see how anyone versed in pro or graduate level stats could think that a completely independent lottery/chance event would have any reliance on past events for its outcome. Yes, I am well versed in graduate statistics. In mathematics we would call it sample size. I've explained it to you as "history."

Edit: I commented prior to reading the rest of the thread. Apologies for reviving a dead argument with little to no meaningful additions.

When prompted as part of some survey or data collection I enter “some college”; my puny reasoning skills only affording me the ability to take and drop community college level statistics multiple times. Yet, I can still grasp that there isn’t some invisible score keeper tracking previous coin flips and waiting to tip the proverbial scale one way or another on the next flip.

Look, I’m not gonna sit here and claim any special ability with math, statistics, or frankly, advanced shoe tying - but like the first thing they teach us regards taking statistics at high school++ is that each coin flip is its own independent event.

Coin FlipsIndividual Flip OddsCumulative Odds (All Heads)
150%50%
250%25%
350%12.5%
450%6.25%
550%3.13%

Yes, as measured prior to any flips happening, the odds of five flips being all heads is 3.13%; but the odds of the 5th flip, once you’ve already overcome the long odds to get to the 5th row in the above table, are still and always 50%.
