Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Actually wasn’t that bad this year. Seattle and Vegas have reduced it pretty dramatically. Like ~12% less and we’d have the 8th best travel schedule. Ducks are near the top though, but even still they’re 20% higher than Boston (median team).

It used to be way worse (Dallas in division, no Seattle), with SJ consistently bottom 5. I will say I kind of root for Portland in expansion to increase western markets. They and SD are the only ones which make sense near SJ.

The two teams atop the list are the two that every UFA seems to want to go to. Should put a can in this being used as an excuse.

Amazing how much no state tax makes a difference.
This is going to become much less of an advantage as the cap skyrockets (assuming the tariffs don't tank Canadian revenue). Having to tack on an extra AAV surcharge to compete with the no tax states is not that big a deal outside of the flat cap turning the league into a ruthless efficiency contest.

In theory yes, but at some point it could tip the scales for an athlete. All things equal (team strength, potential, ownership stability, quality of life etc) between two teams, Team A in a state/province with high taxes, Team B in a no-tax state, Team B will have the advantage.

For example, Team A offers a deal at 10M. Team B can say, earn that same amount at 8.5M and we can use that 1.5 on another player to help us win.

Good thing for the sharks, there’s a plethora of quality rhd in the 2026 draft. In fact, The Athletic has a total of eight Rhd in their first round alone in the 2026 prospect ratings, with Ryan Lin and Keaton Verneoff leading the class. So it’s not like we’re forced to trade for Noah Dobson or other overpriced rfa anyways.

Yeah projecting a year out is always tough...last year at this time people thought Hensler would be a highly sought after D lol.

I would absolutely love Verheoff though. 6'4 RD, June birthday and he scored 21 goals as a D-1. That kid could be something.

If he hit about #18, I’d be pretty tempted to try and go get him. Think he could have a Justin Braun like career.
Yeah personally I’d love to do a reverse trade of what Grier did early in his Sharks tenure. DAL 1st, SJS 2nd, OTT 2nd to trade up to around 10. Get a Schaefer, Misa, or Frondell and a Smith, Mrtka, O’Brien.

Yeah but the whole point is that under a 110M+ cap, 1.5M doesn't buy you jack shit. That's going to be Noah Gregor money very soon. And 1.5M/yr is on the higher end of post-tax income discrepancies.

Because a 20 year old hurt your feelings for not for not fighting 😭
I was more mad at Mack for that since he should easily be able to beat Vatrano and should've stepped up. I do think whoever said "get their face beat in" or whatever was right about Smith because I'm not sure that kid could fight his way out of a paper bag. Smith is the 6-7th best forward currently not counting anyone else through the draft/fa and is being treated like a core piece. The team will find out eventually what's what.

If this is rage bait, you get like a 2/10 on the Hodge scale.

If you're serious, then you need to re-evaluate how professional sports are played. Expecting an 18-year old rookie to fight while calling for another 20-year old rookie to "get his face beat in" is some true degeneracy. Why not call out the guys who have letters? And oh I don't know, have been veterans/leaders.

Because that causes less issues

Where on earth did I call for Smith to get his face beat in? I said it was smart Smith didn't fight because he would've got his face beat in, and Macklin should easily be able to handle himself against someone who is 5'9. Of course, this was because both of these guys were ON THE ICE at the time.

I can't tell if this reply is serious. I think this is the second time your reading comprehension has totally failed you and you just impulsively reply to me.

Vatrano isn’t 5’9”, I can see that google thinks he is, but every hockey website including nhl.com has him at 5’11”. He’s also heavier than both Smith and Celebrini. However, he does go down really easy. 😂

The first line has stagnated. Celebrini is really the only puck-hound for that line. I would like to see Warso go back to swapping Eklund and Smith honestly.
I'd like to see a more shoot-first mentality and fight for rebounds in a greasy way rather than this constant need to thread the needle and show off. Macklin needs to work on the less exciting parts of his offensive game.
