Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

How many games did I watch Will Smith play on the third line? How many games has Kovalenko played on the third line?
The Goodrow-Smith-Kunin line was together for less than 60 5v5 minutes. Smith has exclusively played with other skilled players since proving he belongs there. It's insane that anyone is still whining about how Warsofsky handled Smith this season.

Kovalenko may have more skill than grit but that's just because he doesn't have either. He's a sub-replacement level player.

Avs fan here, just wondering what the state has Georgiev been? You lot think he has played himself out of the NHL?
Georgeiv is not an NHL-quality goaltender. It's possible someone gives him a cheap deal for one year next year because they think they can fix him or they're desperate, but this is a Martin Jones-esque scenario - I think he's just plain below NHL standard on a fundamental level and should go back to Russia.

He's a smaller goalie with a totally worthless glove hand and inadequate positioning. I don't see how those get fixed by coaching.

Georgiev may benefit from the terrible current state of NHL goaltending, there's like 10 teams that don't have an established starter, some desperate team will likely look his way in the hope he can recapture his performance from 2 years ago

Martin Jones played for 3 more NHL teams after leaving San Jose, it can take a while for teams to catch up to the decline of these players, especially when they're desperate

Factor in:

California high tax rate
San Jose has the worst travel of any team in then nhl
losing/rebuilding team

3 things working against the Sharks
Not sure the Sharks have the worst travel in the league anymore. Additions of Vegas and Seattle have alleviated some of the travel burden for the Sharks. We're only traveling the 12th most miles in the NHL this year. It's not an east coast travel schedule, but it's not the worst travel in the NHL.

One thing that has been brought into sharp relief with the games since the deadline is that even if the Sharks draft a forward in the draft (highly probable if we don't get the #1 pick), we're gonna need a short term veteran forward and probably two of them to bridge the time while we wait for our current crop of young forwards plus this year's draft pick to cook and show who is top 6 worthy. Wennberg even as a temporary 2C next year is going to result in another impotent second line that doesn't score enough.

Toronto has the best travel of any NHL team and they haven't won a cup since 1967. This is a non issue.
Winning the cup and attracting players are two different issues, who, and womever Toronto chose is their problem fact is the distances for the Sharks are longer. Seattle is between SJ and Van thus shorter for Seattle to travel to either of those cities. Yes Vegas is only an hour and a half from SJ, but it is shorter for both anaheim and LA. A player could play almost anywhere on the East Coast and have a way better travel schedule.

"No! I don't want to sit on a plane while sleeping or playing Nintendo Switch for 2 more hours 41 times a year!"

-no NHL player ever.

Probably not the case anymore, but back in the 90s if the Sharks had been named the "San Francisco Sharks", they automatically would have had more prestige.

There's a notion that no free agents want to come to SJ, but I don't think this is true. It's just that for the last two decades, the Sharks either haven't had the cap space or have been a complete mess.

Wasn't sure where to put this, this'll do.

On the 32 thoughts podcast, they mentioned Toronto has won two division championships since '67. Thought this was curious, as SJ has 6.

Believe it or not through the past 100 years (1933 being their first), Toronto has 6 total. Boston (27), Montreal (24), Detroit (19), Blackhawks (16), Rangers (8) for comparison amongst the other original/surviving 6.

What a history of incompetence the Leafs have.

Off the top of my head I think Dallas now has the worst travel schedule.

Actually wasn’t that bad this year. Seattle and Vegas have reduced it pretty dramatically. Like ~12% less and we’d have the 8th best travel schedule. Ducks are near the top though, but even still they’re 20% higher than Boston (median team).

It used to be way worse (Dallas in division, no Seattle), with SJ consistently bottom 5. I will say I kind of root for Portland in expansion to increase western markets. They and SD are the only ones which make sense near SJ.

Listen. Of course I would prefer he was on a rival but the joke doesn't work if I start listening caveats.
I do not want him, not one bit!
Not on my team, not in SJ kit!
Not in the net, not in the crease,
I do not want him, not in peace!

I do not care if he's quite tall,
Or if he makes a great big wall!
His glove’s too slow, his stick's not quick,
He makes mistakes that make me sick!

I do not want him on my squad,
Not even if I have a nod!
His rebounds bounce, they go astray,
And then the puck finds a way to play.

I do not need him for my win,
Not even if he tries again!
His pads are big, but what's the use?
I just don’t want him, no excuse!

Not in the East, not in the West,
I just don’t want him—he’s not the best!
So please, dear coach, don’t make me squirm,
Find a goalie who can truly affirm!

I would not like him on a boat
I would not like him on a goat
I would not like him in a tree
I would never like him, even at sea!

I wouldn't want him underground
I would take anyone else, pound for pound!
I do not want him, can you not you see?
Not even if he’s completely free!
No, Alexander Georgiev—
He’s just not the goalie I want wherev!
