Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I'm not sure why people think it's impossible that Marner signs with us. I do think it's unlikely but possible. What I think is impossible is signing Marner and also keeping Eklund, because if somehow Grier wants to sign Marner and he wants to come here, once again no way Grier is trying to build a top 6 which includes four guys at 6' or under.

And if we draft Hagens, which I think is increasingly unlikely and the scouting reports make him less and less exciting to me... Then definitely Eklund is gone before a big contract, or possibly even Smith, although it feels watching and reading about Hagens that he's not actually as good a prospect as Smith was even in draft year.
Watching the moves Grier has made recently, I think that if the Sharks drop below the second pick, it's probably going to be either Martone or Frondell

What missing from this discussion is that Kane signed with the Wings in the middle of the season coming off of major surgery with the possibility he would never play effectively again. It was a gamble for the team and the player, and Kane accepted a low salary to have the chance to play again.
Disagree. Vegas has proven they don't mind taking risks on star players coming off major surgeries. You guys act like Kane was a total beggar. I don't think he was. I think he picked Detroit intentionally. I'm not saying that means Marner will choose to come here, I'm simply saying this should temper all of the "star players don't sign with bad teams" talk. It feels like this board is so afraid to get our hopes up, we tend to get a little pessimistic. Like remember in the offseason when everyone was saying that we can't expect Mack to be our 1C in year 1? Sometimes these things do happen and IMO we don't have to be so pessimistic all the time.

1) Celebrini and Eklund both have more points than Kane right now
2) Kane may have had better options than the Red Wings, but he still is not comparable to Marner
I'll post this here so you can say I told you so later if I'm wrong, but I think Kane will outscore both of them by the time the season is done.

And if I'm right, maybe you'll rethink our differences on 2. 🙂

Kane has three Cups and a toddler. Detroit is a quick flight or a reasonable drive from both his and his wife's hometowns. He also played minor and junior hockey in Michigan. Seems likely that out of the options he had, at this stage in his career he chose Detroit for family/familiarity reasons rather than them being the most competitive team that would potentially sign him.

Marner probably wants to be on a contender in the EC.

I think you are right about some reasons why Kane liked the idea of playing for the Wings, but again, he signed mid-season, not during the summer. Most teams were close to the cap and could not fit him under it. If Marner goes on the market as a UFA this summer, it is a totally different situation.

From what I remember he wanted to play with Debrincat again

Factor in:

California high tax rate
San Jose has the worst travel of any team in then nhl
losing/rebuilding team

3 things working against the Sharks

So is Kovalenko still in the country?
I think he's just not showing that he deserves to start. He was hot when he first came from Colorado, but he pretty much gets one shot and one giveaway per game and just kind of does nothing. For a small winger without much defensive value, he's not exactly making a case for himself.

Yet, somehow still more than at least 5 other forwards getting regular game time.

I would rather have Kovalenko get time than someone without a future, like Goodrow, Gregor, Kostin, Grundstrom, etc, but I don't think it's deniable at this stage that Kovalenko has not really shown much lately himself, and he's not actually young himself (he'll be 26 in October). He's basically just A Guy who came in hot and might have a 1% chance of developing into a middle six winger for a few years.

There's no reason Klim Kostin should have had more opportunities to play than Kovalenko

At a certain point, we're just picking one or another deck chair because we don't have enough useful furniture to put on deck for a full set.
Yeah, but I know and the Sharks know exactly what Klim Kostin is at this point. He's been on the team for a year and he's established that he's a guy with some tools who has inconsistent effort. There's no need to continue putting him on a top two line when guys are out, yet he is the default pick for that role time and time again. Kovalenko got a few chances to be in a top 6 role and did well in that role, but then got slotted onto checking lines for which he is not value added because he's not a big guy who is going to go out and make a big physical impact on a game. But unfortunately Warsofsky loves to put guys who have more skill than grit on lines with unskilled players and then scratches his head wondering why those skill guys aren't generating offense anymore.

No he doesn't. You're just making shit up to complain about at this point.
