We have wasted entirely too much time in this forum talking about Marner
Didn’t Utah go batshit in the last offseason?Oh I don't disagree, I'm of the opinion to not sign him myself because I want to give it at least another year if not 2 before we go big. I just know following Utah they are likely big game hunting and I can't see someone like Marner picking San Jose over a Utah even if I think Utah will struggle to bring in FAs as well
We can be choosers. We likely won't have much of a choice but to be since the odds of us signing anyone isn't good. Such a signing also doesn't have good odds of working out so it's whatever to me. I'd rather Grier be patient but it's his choice. We'll see.To me, it's quite simple: when it comes to high-end free agents, beggars can't be choosers.
The Sharks have historically been beggars on that front. So if an opportunity like Marner presents itself, yes, you may have questions and concerns, but at his talent level (and age), I'd bite your arm off for him. You're massively adding talent without relinquishing any assets (except cap space).
I should be clear that I don't believe Marner signing with the Sharks is realistic, but that's sort of the point: if something seemingly unrealistic does become an actual possibility, how can you say no to it?
Yeah, Marner is probably banking on an 8x13 with Toronto and failing that a 7x13 on the open market. Someone will give it to him. It shouldn't be the Sharks. We still need to target guys that will take a Toffoli-like contract so that we keep flexibility through extensions given to Askarov, Celebrini, Eklund, Smith, and any defenseman we develop into top four quality.Marner is about to turn 28. He’s not signing a short deal in the hopes of cashing in at 32.
Parise went from a 8th place team to a 24th place team (out of 30)Has the top UFA of a year ever signed with the worst team in the league during the summer?
I am a huge Toffoli fan man. The dude is exactly the veteran this team needed for a season like this and I really hope he's still here when we turn that corner for the playoffs. Off topic but every time I see and hear him talk about the team, he always comes off as a solid human being and genuinely awesome team mate.
Agreed. As much as I'd love to see GMMG decide that this is the summer to "go for it", I just don't see him jumping the gun by making a giant long term splash. The kids likely need another year to season, and they likely need to see what they have in musty, dick, cherny, Lund, and haltunnen at the pro level (not to mention Pohlkamp) to know what they need. they also have to see if Askarov is as good as advertised. They also have to see how the draft lottery goes as a win secures the D longer term, and a loss more likely secures the O. As such, I still think a small army of 1-2 year overpaid deals for tier ii/iii UFAs is more likely.Yeah, Marner is probably banking on an 8x13 with Toronto and failing that a 7x13 on the open market. I feel like I was probably one of Mukh's bigger supporters, but the way he's played since the Four Nations has exceeded my hopes for him this year. When you take into account just how solid he's been (and gradually coming out of his shell more with the puck on his stick, which is a big aspect of his game) while playing a lot of tough minutes on his off side, it's all really impressive—and absolutely looks sustainable.Shakir has been outstanding lately and last night he was a stud. Looking forward to see how good this guy gets...
Considering that 33 year old Kane ended up on a better team when he joined Detroit (being a playoff pickup for the Rangers doesn't really count), it's not comparable at all. While it's a little bit of a different situation, I think Kane signing with Detroit should temper all of the "Marner will never sign with a team that's not been in the playoffs in years" narrative on here.
Better team? Detroit's about to miss the playoffs for the 9th straight year while the Rangers are coming off a loss in the conference finals. (I almost said they were going to make the playoffs for the 4th straight season, but just checked and...dang Montreal!)Considering that 33 year old Kane ended up on a better team when he joined Detroit (being a playoff pickup for the Rangers doesn't really count), it's not comparable at all.
I guess it wasn't enough to just say that his time with the Rangers didn't count, so here's Kane telling you in his own words that the Rangers probably didn't want him backBetter team? Anyway, putting that aside, because maybe Kane actually thought he was going to a better team, my point is that Kane could have signed with a true contender like Vegas, Florida, etc. So clearly star players are willing to sign with bad teams *if* they see potential.
But then he has to live in Utah.I don't see why Marner would sign in San Jose when Utah is likely going to throw a ton of money at him with a 5% state income tax. Just my thought. I don't think he will sign in Utah either, I think he stays in Toronto but I feel like he will have way better opportunities than San Jose
As little as I think Marner wants to come to SJ, what makes you think Grier wants to sign him? Yes, hes obviously a great talent, and I'd be thrilled if Grier did get him, but it seems kinda obvious to me that Grier is looking for size. Marner does not bring size. He plays with matthews (6'3, 217) and knies (6'3, 227). In fact, nylander is the only other guy in their top 6 that isnt 6'1 or taller, and marner is their only top 6 sub 200 lbs. While it's a little bit of a different situation, I think Kane signing with Detroit should temper all of the "Marner will never sign with a team that's not been in the playoffs in years" narrative on here.
I think we are seriously underrating the impact the voice of a mentor like Patty can have in the life of someone in Marner's life phase. Not to mention the sunshine and the bright shining future of Celebrini & co. I'm not saying it's a guarantee or anything, but IMO if he doesn't resign in Toronto (which I think is the most likely outcome), I actually expect him to come to SJ.
Look, I have no love for Kane, but 1) an "old, declining Patrick Kane" looks like he'll end the season with more points than anyone on our team and 2) if you think he didn't have options to play with real contenders, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.I guess it wasn't enough to just say that his time with the Rangers didn't count, so here's Kane telling you in his own words that the Rangers probably didn't want him back

Patrick Kane’s Rangers tenure seems all but over
Patrick Kane couldn’t help but speak about his time with the Rangers in the past tense.nypost.com
I really have no idea why you think an old and declining Patrick Kane is in any way comparable to Marner, but maybe someone else will buy the comparison. But Marner isn't coming here and the discussion about whether it would make financial sense to do it or not is about as relevant as discussing whether we're having lunch on the moon tomorrow. Neither of those things is going to happen.
One thing I really like about Grier is he has shown flexibility in his thinking when talent demands it (see Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Cagnoni). The opportunity to add a talent of Marner's level for free I think would be a no brainer for him. Besides, it's not like this stops him from trading for Marchment this summer. As little as I think Marner wants to come to SJ, what makes you think Grier wants to sign him? The sharks have smith, celebrini, and eklund. All small. even toffoli is only 6'. Adding marner is not the kind of guy grier will want to add this summer.
I wouldnt get any kind of hopes up for taking a stab at marner. We aint the place for him and he aint the target for grier.
yes, he seems to have taken huge leaps and bounds in development since the break, the trade deadline sure did open up ice time for the Shakir.I feel like I was probably one of Mukh's bigger supporters, but the way he's played since the Four Nations has exceeded my hopes for him this year. I think it's probably true that his ceiling is on the second pair, but I feel more confident than ever about him fulfilling that—and definitely being more of a 3 than a 4, the lynchpin of a damn good second pair.

Yes, Kane has absolutely nothing to prove from a postseason standpoint, and has made plenty of money, so he could accept playing for a bad or mediocre team in order to get a chance to prove that he can still play in the NHL.What missing from this discussion is that Kane signed with the Wings in the middle of the season coming off of major surgery with the possibility he would never play effectively again. It was a gamble for the team and the player, and Kane accepted a low salary to have the chance to play again.
