Driedger probably. Was the super obvious choice. However, with Askarov not being ready, curious what Grier does in this deal to get the backup situation taken care of.

My feelings are that teams in Cup or bust mode like FLA prefer having a 3rd goalie for in case of emergency. Feel like they'd like to keep Driedger around probably for that role. Could be wrong though. Vancouver had multiple goalies last year. Vegas had multiple injuries before Hill took over. Just seems like a spot where they'd probably like to keep the depth around.Driedger probably.
One might go so far as to say it's one of the trade returns of all time.Well that's certainly a return
Giles is probably a better expected return than a 7th - I'd be curious to see how many 7th round picks turn into an AHL player - but that's about all I can say about it.I think the only explanation is there was no market for Vitek, and Giles has a Warsofsky connection through Charlotte. This is basically one step above Future Considerations.
Since he's reporting to the Cuda, might be prep for post deadline call ups. Cuda depth is pretty thin since we've taken Graf, Mukh, and Thompson. So if we trade Sturm and maybe call someone up, they're gonna be decimated.I think the only explanation is there was no market for Vitek, and Giles has a Warsofsky connection through Charlotte. Which means nothing since they’re clearly not trying to win a championship there, especially if and when Askarov gets the call.Since he's reporting to the Cuda, might be prep for post deadline call ups. No, but it’s odd since we don’t really have goaltending depth with Askarov injured. One thing I like about Grier is he doesn’t try and extract absolute max value from every trade. This trade does Vanacek a favor and also helps Florida out. This trade earns good will with agents and other GMs and helps Grier be one of the guys called when a GM needs something done. This is probably how the Walman trade happened. Grier was contacted because Stevie Y wanted to move him and Grier said yes. Grier isn’t contacted by Stevie Y if he plays hardball with guys like Vanacek.
There is no need to “win” every trade especially these smaller trades.
Technically, he'd be a rubber adsorber, not an absorber.....I'd rather have kept Vanacek as a rubber absorber.
Though I suppose this saves Plattner real money, and does Vanacek a favor. Though, one can't help but think that the Boston-obsessed Grier is overvaluing Giles.
Right now, I have the Barracuda with:Since he's reporting to the Cuda, might be prep for post deadline call ups. Cuda depth is pretty thin since we've taken Graf, Mukh, and Thompson. So if we trade Sturm and maybe call someone up, they're gonna be decimated.
Does it really do Vanecek a favor? Going to get less action in FLA than he would in SJ. Granted, better defense so maybe better numbers, but it's not like sending a good soldier skater like Bonino to a playoff team where he can play. Vanecek just has to put off his summer vacation/training plans longer to sit around as Bob's backup. One thing I like about Grier is he doesn’t try and extract absolute max value from every trade. Absolutely it does. Performing well in a backup role in Florida gives Vanecek a shot at getting another NHL contract this summer.Does it really do Vanecek a favor? He'll get a little bit of a tax benefit between now and the end of the season. I don't think him playing in San Jose was doing him any favors when it led to below average numbers for him. If he gets a few games in Florida where he does well, it increases his odds of being in the NHL next season.Does it really do Vanecek a favor? Going to get less action in FLA than he would in SJ. I'd have more imposter syndrome there than joy of "winning a Cup". Midseason backup goalie addition that plays 6ish regular season games for the team and gets a ring if they win the Cup.It is a favor for him if they win the cup.
One injury away from being The Man in the playoffs for one of the Cup favorites. That scenario certainly wouldn't lead to imposter syndrome (and could be a hell of a showcase for him). He has enough of a track record that he's going to get a job next year anyway.I'd have more imposter syndrome there than joy of "winning a Cup". It’s crazy to think that the Sharks players are actually developing under this coaching staff. I just don’t get the hate on Warsofsky when the important future players are showing wonderful positive development. On a side note: can we talk about Mukh's play for a minute?
Smith, Celly, Eklund, all have been playing great. theres lots of talk about Ferraro's improvement raising his trade value. Lots of chatter about alot of guys, but the most exciting thing to me has been Mukh's emergence.
Our D has been the obvious problem for years. When mukh came up initially, he was shaky. His decision making was so so, his physicality was lacking, and he didnt look all that ready, kinda like Smith in the first half. However, much like Smith, Mukh seems to have found his game. He's made a ton is small, subtle, smart plays in his own zone moving plays up the wall, getting good body positions, using his length, and also helping out in the O zone too. The last four games, hes averaging over 20 mins/gm, and has 4 pts, and +4 against quality teams on the road. In fact, since the 4 nations, he hasnt had a minus game yet (5 pts, and +5 in those 6 games all at Even strength)
He is emerging as a real top 4 Dman! I wonder if we might be able to pencil him in, going forward, among the top 4 with much great confidence? If so, that's a huge evolution. I think we really ought to be talking about his emergence as much as Smith or others. He's revolutionizing the roster in real time...
