As will any decent D-man available. What, you think any good one is gonna be like "I only wanna sign for the duration of the team sucking, but I wanna be long gone when they're good again"?
A handful of them I would offer seven years. Fabbro is probably one of them.

Think it depends if you make it worth their while. To me, I'd offer Ekblad $9.5M for 5 years ($47.5M total). He's AFP projected at $7M for 7 years ($49M total). If I'm the player, you're giving me almost equal money for 2 less years and allowing me to hit UFA (or re-sign me) for one final ~3ish year deal for solid money before I turn 35. Seems like a better deal than the 7x7 to me if you can get it (particularly with the rapidly rising cap ceiling).

Obviously in FLA, he wanted 8 years because that locks him up with one franchise for his career. There's value there. However, once you leave the 8 year deal goes away and it becomes more about business.

Fabbro was a guy literally on waivers a couple months ago. I don’t put him in that category of decent d-men.
Maybe but if that's what it takes to bring him in to San Jose, I'd do it. He's performing as a top pairing defenseman in Columbus right now across Werenski. He would likely be a good fit across any of our upcoming LHD's.

I think his play may have earned him a 3 maybe 4 year deal at most, but buying high on a guy who Nashville didn't even want a couple months ago doesn't strike me as a Grier move.

Maybe but we're going to need to either give him a significant amount of trade protection and/or give him a high AAV for that sort of term even with Nashville giving up on him. He's played exceptionally well in Columbus and I'm not sure why signing Fabbro in free agency after proving himself to a good degree wouldn't be a Grier move when he's a Boston guy and plays a position we'll need to address this offseason.

If he's going to address the right side then just go balls to the wall and figure out a way to bring Bouchard aboard.

I'd be in support of that for the right price but I'd still want to sign Fabbro in addition to that. There's no reason to not do both if it's on the table.

Guess it depends on what Dante is looking for AAV
Agreed but at least the worst ask in terms of years will be his age 27-33 years. He's about as good of a bet on a long term deal as you'll get on the free agent market since most defensemen are slightly older asking for 7 years that puts them into those 35+ years. If we need to overcommit to bring in a defenseman, he seems like the safest bet to do that.

Sharks trade Ferraro for a 1st.

Trade Ferraro 1st and dallas 1st along side the 2nd round pick for 3rd overall.

Draft Schaefer and misa/martone/haggens.

Win cup in 2026/27

Those picks probably only get us into the 8-11 range though I would support a plan to move up with picks to get Eklund. One good way to improve on our competitive capabilities is to set our team up to where we could have each of Celebrini, Eklund, and Smith drive offense on their own respective lines.
