Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I think teams will be more willing to move picks this draft. A 2nd isn't getting it done though as we just saw the literal same player in Lindgren get a 2nd and 4th as a rental (like down to both being 49th overall picks and everything).

Given Colorado was interested in Ferraro and opted for the 2nd and 4th for a Lindgren rental over term on Ferraro means we're pretty clearly not taking a 2nd round package in return (unless it also includes a prospect - something Colorado has none of). Have to see if the group of Detroit, Minnesota, Winnipeg, and Toronto (all teams that have been mentioned in some form or fashion) want to pay up as supply begins to decrease.
I think Lindgren will have had more value as a pending UFA who is seen as a playoff warrior (and actually has playoff experience). We can't retain on Ferraro. I don't expect him to get traded at this deadline because I don't think anyone is giving us more than a 2nd for him.

I think retention gets overrated/sensationalized, but it is barely worth mentioning on a $3.2M deal for a non-replacement level D-Man. Ferraro isn't all of a sudden a super steal value wise because WPG paid an extra 5th rounder for someone to eat $1.6M of his contract. All but 4 teams have enough cap space to assume all of Ferraro's reasonable $3.2M and not have an issue.

We may not get a 1st, but that's the only way that Ferraro is moving as we will be able to fetch that 2nd rounder basically any time we want next season (suppose we could do an offer of a pair of 2nds rather than just one this TDL as well). Just a matter of GMs thinking to themselves whether they want to pay a 2nd rounder for a rental this year and then turn around and do the same next year or would they rather buy once and cry once in a lesser perceived draft class to get a player for multiple runs.

Vanacek being held out for trade reasons.

At this point Grier should just dress only Georgiev and play him for the final 21 or so games.

Askarov is still hurt (far as I know), and the only other option the Sharks would have if we moved Vanecek is Romanov, and he just returned from injury Sunday. Wonder if we're acquiring/signing another goalie this week.

My guess is a goalie would come back since e have no retention and no one is taking Vanny's 3.4 prorated hit.

Call up options from Cuda are Romanov (just returned from injury) or Askarov (out from injury).

IMHO they should sign Carriere to NHL deal.

(If they want a bench warmer, they could sign Dell to NHL deal, but he'd have to clear waivers if they have someone else.)

I presume we'd take someone else's crappy goalie back in a theoretical deal.

Pretty surprised anyone's interested in Vanacek TBH.

I think Grier is addicted to tanking.

I disagree, I think as he said himself, he had hoped this team would be better this year and they weren’t. Blackwood wasn’t going to re-sign, so he traded him for a great return and at that point it was clear to just grit their teeth and finish 2nd to last or just last really wasn’t worth not trading a guy like Granlund/Ceci to get a 1st.

All his moves make sense to me and I think he will absolutely try to build a much better team next year. In the meantime, we’re still rebuilding and getting assets is for the guys that likely won’t be here next year only makes sense.

It’s not like he’s trading Will Smith for picks.

My only issue is these players aren't just gonna want money, they're gonna want major term. Why would any older player come to an organization not ready to compete for a few years in a state with high taxes, and why would we want to have an overpaid guy being an anchor when we may need the cap space in 5 years? Ekblad, for example, will be a major concern in say 5 years when he's making 8.5-9 at 34 playing maybe 50% of the games.
Seems like Ekblad wants 8 years:

Seems obvious that Florida is the team after Vanecek after dealing Knight. Just scrolling Puckpedia to see how the money and goaltending situation in SJ is going to work out.

Suppose Pittsburgh, Boston, or Seattle could broker and send us back Jarry, Korpisalo, or Grubbauer to fill our goalie needs (at a cost to dump the contracts).

No, I don't think it is equally likely. It's unrealistic to get a 1st for Ferraro, but it's not the same as negative value Goodrow.
If we got a 1st for Goodrow, I would fly to Buffalo and rent a car to drive him to the airport myself.

Plus then I could visit Buffalo.
