Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

This statement is just objectively wrong.

Grundstrom had 40 goals in 236 games for LA, meaning he literally scored at a 14 goal pace for his career, his next worst pace was 10 goals and his pace this season jumped from 2 to 4.
You gotta send your resume into Grier - let's get those goal numbers back up!

Vancouver made out like bandits in the JT Miller trade. On paper the trade helps nobody but the Rangers are trending way down and the lottery protection on that pick could land Vancouver an even better pick in 2026.

And now that pick has been traded back out of the Division. Nice.

Carl Grundstrom never played more than 57 games for LA and I doubt it was because of injury. He's just not very good.

With the rising cap, the Shark's are going to be at a disadvantage. The other contending teams have their stars signed to terrific deals. The inverse of 2020, except that the Sharks are still the loser...

It's much more likely to be an advantage for the Sharks because we can actually spend $113M+ on payroll while poverty franchises will start bleeding players due to their internal budgets being well below that.

Also which contending teams have stars signed to terrific deals? McDavid, Makar, Kaprizov and Eichel are only signed for 2 more seasons max. It's mostly pathetic teams like Buffalo, Montreal and Ottawa who have mediocre talent signed long term.

First Weekes with his stupid x-post, now Friedge on 32 thoughts wonder if Brandt Clarke might be available. Per Friedmann, the problem is that Clarke does not fit the style the kings wanna play (which is odd, since the GM in charge is the one that drafted the kid). Anyway: what would you offer for BC?
theres also reports (32 thoughts maybe?) that say the Kings think Clarke might top out as a 4, rather than a top pairing guy who can carry the play. They may undervalue him, or that may be all he ever becomes.

Wonder if we could theoretically do a Martin Jones 2.0 here.

With vanecek returning soon what's the goaltending situation going to look like?

Does askarov get sent down? Vanecek - georgiev - Askarov all on the roster? Who is starter or is it just a tandem?

One thing that excites me is that Sharks actually have Celebrini and can sign him to any kind of a 8-year deal knowing they have the ultimate piece secured. I think he is a kind of a player that will accept 8x12mil to have the team deep enough for winning. He will have secured money for life and will be 29 years old for the next big deal as an UFA with freedom of choice.

Happy Granlund gets to compete for the Cup. Ceci was a great soldier too.

This opens up a slot on defense for one of the young guys down the stretch (hopefully Muhk after a great game with Cuda but Thompson obviously makes more sense). Say goodbye to Willy Smithy’s point streak though… Curious if Smith goes back to being a C now.

We just got lots worse, which is saying a lot.

I’m less worried about Ceci but Granlund gave us 2 okay top 6 lines. Without him, what are we looking at?

Eklund - Celebrini - Toffoli
?? - Smith - Zetterlund

Or, I guess probably:

Smith - Wennberg - Zetterlund

with Kunin centering the 3rd line. Woof.
Moving this post from @Jargon over here because it's important for lineup speculation.

Forward impacts: top 6 options

Eklund-Celebrini-Toff
Zetts-Wenny-Smith

OR

Eklund-Celebrini-Smith
Zetts-Wenny-Toff

Both ice 2 weak 2nd lines.

And on the backend

Walman-Thrun
Ferraro-Liljegren
Vlasic-Thompson

or

Walman-Vlasic
Ferraro-Liljegren
Thrun-Thompson

Basically a weak 2nd pair and two weak 3rd pairs. Big big yikes.

Kinda hoping they bring up Muhk and put him on the right side with Walman because chaos

Ugh I was hoping we would keep Granlund. There was a world where he couldve worn the C until Celebrini was ready, IMO.

Wonder what the return is.
Of all the reasons you’d keep a guy… Plus, Couture is keeping the C until he’s officially done per Grier. So that means it’s a direct to Celebrini for 2027-28.
