Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I think it's gonna be hard for us to add this summer. All of a sudden, all of the contenders are gonna have a ton of cap space to go on big UFA runs and we won't get a good chance to make enticing offers

It's all relative. Contenders are still going to have to pay their guys and run out of cap space the same way they always have. Cap won't be as tight as it was with the silly COVID stuff, but it will still not be so much that teams aren't up against it. Agents will be sure that doesn't happen.

The guy who is really going to get PAID is Quinn Hughes. Mack was always going to get his $10M second contract.

Here's an excerpt from EP's trade deadline article. Nothing ground-breaking, but I think his value will absolutely depend on what other centers get moved at the deadline. If Pettersson, Miller, O'Reilly, and Nelson are moved, then Granlund might not garner enough interest to be worth moving. But the first three guys have term on their contracts and might be hard to move in-season, and the Isles might play themselves back into a playoff race. In the latter scenario, Granlund would then be the top dog on the market and be worth a 1st. Honestly, pretty fascinating storylines towards this deadline.

Per the Called Up Prospect, Cam Robinson mentioned that team's are targeting 2026 1sts, not 2025 due to quality of this year's late first. Expectation (although this is always what the media says) is it could lead to lower level players garnering 1sts in 2025.

Totally agree with Jux that other centers moving will hugely impact Granlund's demand. If you can pay triple what you pay for Granny and get Miller that is obviously the right choice. Multiple years on a fair contract. Same for Petterson, who could be a team's franchise forward. Don't see him as the next Eichel, but he's obviously way higher priority than Granlund. Nelson and O'Reilly play the "right way". Dream scenario is a 2026 1st (or 2025 1st from a borderline team), but any first would be great. Failing that wouldn't be surprised to see him getting 2 2nds.

I imagine Winnipeg and Minnesota definitely go for a 2C, it'll be interesting how many other teams pay for them.

Seriously

Kid's gonna cash in big time

Hope he's extended on July 1st 2026 for like $11M. I'll be watching to see what Bedard gets as I think that'll be 500k-$1M below what Mack gets.

If Mack only signs for that I'd be shocked. Team is gonna end up signing him to an 8 year 104 million dollar deal at the minimum. In fact you kind of hope that's what it is because if he takes less then that means he didn't take the next step yet.

Most teams are not going to move 2026 picks because it's an asset that they can't use at the deadline for next year. I think there is a lot of posturing and storyline building right now by many/most. We see teams give away picks like candy this time of year and then all of a sudden 1st rounders are worth their weight in gold come draft week.

Either way, whatever we get for Granlund should be packaged in a deal for roster help for next season. Not time to mortgage the future, but moving late 1st rounders and 2nd rounders for NHL help should be right around the corner. Without doing so and accelerating this thing, we're not going to get close enough to the playoffs to ever justify buying in the next 3-4 years.

Kid's special, but only Eichel ($10M), Matthews ($11.6M) and McDavid ($12.5M) have gotten north of $10M on their second contract. Barkov, Petterson, MacKinnon, Stuzle, and Hughes did not. He may very well get $12M, but I'd be surprised if he gets $13M. It goes without saying that those contracts were signed under a very different environment, but the second contract cap is a thing.

The only risk is that we sign Celebrini to that contract projecting continued cap growth that never actually takes place. In other words, we get Dubased.

If you look at the history of the cap era there's always been something from a recession to a lockout to a pandemic to CAD devaluation that causes cap stagnation.

When Eichel signed, the cap was under 80 million. You're talking about the difference of potentially 35 million dollars or 45%. 13 million is basically gonna be the equivalent of 8.5.

Eichel signed at $10M one year early, heading into a $75M salary cap.

If Mack signed a year early, he would be heading into a $104M salary cap based on the report. So an equivalent salary cap hit for him would be about $13.87M.
