Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I am honestly shocked if this is true but reports that Brandt Clarke RHD 6'2 is on the trade block? I personally would be very interested and with the recent quote from Grier on "keeping an eye out on any situations like (Askarov)" this could fit the bill but I am guessing the Kings are looking for some win now pieces. I wouldn't mind giving up something like Granlund or maybe Zetterlund + Ferraro as the Kings could use an upgrade at LD on their third pairing. Anyone else interested in Clarke and what do you think a deal looks like?

I had the same though when I saw that report, but isn't it a red flag that a 22 year old defenseman can't stay in the lineup of a pretty middle of the pack team when they're healthy?

Worth looking into, for sure, but I thought Byfield was gonna break out this season and he hasn't.

Maybe a LD like Mukh or Cagnoni? No idea.

Why are people so eager to get rid of Zetterlund? He has proven last season wasn't a fluke and that he's a legit 2nd line winger/3rd liner on a great team. He's still only 25, can be signed to a +EV contract and is one our few burners and few RH shots up front.

Clarke is a soft offenseman who the team that drafted and patiently developed him appears to have lost faith in. NHL history is littered with these highly drafted defensemen whose risk profile and defensive ineptitude renders them unplayable beyond 3rd pairing/PP minutes.

At 22, Sandin was getting scratched by Toronto (good team with a mid at best defense) before they traded him. It took a bit of time, but he's been a great 2-way defenseman for the Caps this season: he's been top 10 in various advance stats and the eye test confirms he's been really good.

Sandin has always been one of the better skaters in the league. Clarke skates like post-groin surgery Erik Karlsson.

Fair enough. Like I said I'm not writing off Clarke and I would be intrigued if he were actually on the block. Just think that he's not a #1.

I wonder if Jordan Spence is the guy they move to make room for Clarke.

Finding vets at the goaltending position on a bottom feeder is literally the easiest position in the league to fill. Hell, pay Charlie Lindgren now that he's essentially lost his starter spot in Washington.

Gushchin and Bordeleau’s ships have sailed. I don’t get the obsession with them when we have better prospects coming through the system. They aren’t even dominating in the AHL.

Because you can trade them for something if you play them, even if they don't amount to anything.

There's only upside to playing Bordeleau or Gushchin on a 3rd scoring line and it also stops Grier from wasting picks to fill out the roster.

To trade them for something that would have to imply they have any value in the first place.

Both Gushchin and Bordeleau are scoring at a .61 points per game rate as offense only wings in the AHL. Both are down significantly in their AHL scoring this season on a better team compared to last year. They absolutely do not provide any additional benefit than any player currently on the Sharks.

There is a reason they have seen their teammates called up before them. Just because they were the best Sharks prospects 3 years ago doesn’t mean they are relevant to the team anymore.

This all may be true but it doesn't mean that they can't be used as filler after the trade deadline if the need arises. If they end up trading their rentals up front, they will need three bodies if they don't get any as part of their returns. It shouldn't surprise anyone if one of them gets the call.

Even if every UFA forward is traded we can run:

Eklund-Celebrini-Toffoli
Zetterlund-Wennberg-Smith
Kovalenko-Dellandrea-Kostin
Goodrow-White-Duehr

With Grundstrom as an injury replacement. No forward should be called up from the Barracuda unless they legitimately earn it with their play and even then it probably makes sense to prioritize getting the Cuda into the playoffs.
