Many people say that Smith will definitely improve and be ready in 1-2 years, but this is just blind faith. Undoubtedly, he sees his partners well and is able to give a good pass. Too young to know this. He’s at the expected spot of his development curve, I don’t see a reason to be pessimistic at the moment.

Macklin looking as good as he has had skewed perspective a bit I feel. What Mack is doing is not normal. What Smith is doing is a lot more in line of what you would expect.

Heck, he is essentially scoring at the same rate as Adam Fantili is right now who has the benefit of being on a better team and a year of NHL experience under his belt. Leo Carlsson isn't much further ahead either. And those guys were the big non Bedard prizes.

Again, Smith may very well end up being a bust, but can we at least let him get a year or two to show how shitty he is? He's clearly improved since his first handful of games. There is no way he can get any better anymore?

This point can’t be emphasized enough. Celebrini is on pace for one of the most impressive rookie seasons since Crosby. What Celebrini is doing to absolutely not normal and skews everyones perception of Smith.

Personally, I wouldn't consider Hertl to have been a traditional "teenaged NHLer". He had two years of pro-hockey in the Czech Republic already and he turned 20 in November. He was also 6'3" and playing on the wing of prime Joe Thornton. People around here also called him a bust during his sophomore year though, so maybe it is relevant...

Lots of "rumors" and tradebaiting towards Granlund -> Dallas, full freight. I'm mixed. BUT, i wonder if Ceci and Granlud could be targets of theirs, sweetening our pot

I've heard nothing; just some speculation from various writers.

Regarding Goodrow:

1) Trade made sense at the time. He probably had a year too much on his contract, but it was what it was.
2) The people who were more skeptical about his ability to play hockey appear to have had the right measure. Outside of the PK, he doesn't look NHL-quality.
3) Goodrow is probably a great person in the room, and that's valuable, especially to a rebuilding team. It isn't a complete coincidence that Grier targeted him, or that the Rangers have collapsed since the trade.

Regarding Smith:

There are...hyperbolic takes about a 19-year-old rookie. It doesn't help that he has to play alongside an 18-year-old phenom. But, even with less experience, he has similar numbers to his draft compatriots from 2023. It's a good sign, and it points to Smith hitting his stride when the Sharks's window opens.

At the same time, there was some debate about Smith's ceiling and his role in the organization. It's not 100% yet, but it's clearer now than before that Smith isn't going to be a generational-level talent. As fitting the joke, he's at best going to be the #2 guy behind Celebrini (that's nearly 100% certainty). I'm not sure what the odds are on him being a franchise player vs. "just" a #1C, but it has to be skewing more toward the latter.

We did have this Patrick guy a while back. He spent a whole lot of time on a traditional checking line his rookie year because Darryl Sutter wouldn’t have it any other way. Turns out he became a pretty good two way player.

I was five years old when that happened! I know some people on this forum absolutely love to brag about how ancient they are, but I don't think most of us have a clear recollection of Patrick Marleau as a rookie.
