If Askarov starts ruining the tank, we can always schedule buddy development days with Will Smith to punish him.
I'm alright with us continuing to lose the shootout when it's Celebrini and Smith getting the attempts. When they start burying them is when we'll start winning them and them getting the experience either way is the correct decision.
When it comes to Askarov, I'd give him every opportunity reasonable for however long they expect Vanecek to be injured. He could win them all on his own and it still wouldn't really jeopardize the tank. He should be sent back down after Vanecek gets healthy and called back up when another injury occurs which is inevitable.

Blackwood has been very good this season and we're still at the bottom of the barrel. If Askarov is so much better than him that we're at risk of not drafting top-5, then that's the opposite of a problem.
Only real chance of that is if askarov comes in and pulls his 1st 2 ahl starts this season for the rest of the nhl season.

He did and played a whole 10 shifts at 8:14 of time. They rode the top four of Werenski, Severson, Provorov, and Fabbro hard.
Sharks are doing too well. GMMG has to make a trade to mess the team up and get the tank rolling again. I think Granlund has to go soon, or Ceci. Don't wait until the deadline. Gotta get the tank rolling as Macklin is ruining it.

We got Macklin, I’m frankly done with the tank mentality. Let them win, let them get used to winning and competing and fighting every shift. We got the prize we needed and we’ll get a good player no matter what — if we’re not picking top 5 that means our young guys have really come on and the team is further ahead than we thought. That’s a good thing!

I 100% agree.
I would say that if we didn't have Will Smith as the 2C projection, I would be a little more on the tank side but I feel like when we have our 1-2C projected, it's time to start getting better as much as you can.
It's great feeling that they can go with the flow, either they get a good prospect next year or start getting better, very good problem to have.

Daydreaming about drafting Martone and him challenging for that 3RW spot next season, while being a future 1RW. But also Schaefer locking down the LD depth for years and years... also helping Sharks really focus on getting solid RD partners for them and not to necessary need to look for the next gamebreaking RD necessary.
Tampa Bay Lightning championship team situation with having all the gamechanging defence in LD (Hedman, Sergachev, McDonagh) or a non-playoff example in Buffalo (Dahlin, Power, Byram)
I've always been a big fan of having that 1RD being the main player in defence (because of the great Brent Burns) but I'm ready for something fresh if it means we have a chance of great success in the next 10 years.

Personally don’t think smith will be our solution at 2C. Fantilli or Carlsson would have been.

But I think maybe give a 19 year old more than 5 minutes to figure out the hardest league in the world?
We dont need to tank on purpose. trading future assets to win today would be asinine, but losing in order to draft high is equally asinine. Yes, getting another superstar would be great in the long term. But, building a winning culture is, to me, more important. Winning begets winning. its very very hard to turn around a titanic with kids.
The sharks have a nice cache of likely NHL level prospects now. They have Pohlcamp, the leading scoring dman (Tied) on the top NCAA program in the country and a +13. They have BDE, the leading OHL scoring Dman (in Points/gm by alot). They have Musty, who is cruising near 2 pts per game on a pretty weak OHL team, clearly too good for that level. They have Graf who is Tied for the AHL scoring lead. They have Cagnoni who is 2nd in the AHL in D scoring.
Not to mention Cherny who hasnt played yet, Gush, Cardwell, and bordeleau who may make the leap, and a handful of other reasonable prospects in LSW, Lund, and others.
And of course, the best goalie prospect in the world.
And of course, Celly, Smith ,Eklund, Thompson, etc at hte NHL level already.
Do we realllllly need to suck in order to add one more? Is it worth tanking, and continuing to build a losing culture to add one more star?
We may well end up being in the bottom even without purposely tanking, but it makes no sense to try to lose. The kids need to smell blood. They need to taste victory. To score OT winners, and complete crazy 3rd period comebacks. They need to be rewarded for good details. Tanking achieves none of these invaluable experiences.
Should they move current assets to continue acquiring picks? Yes. Of course they should get max value for the assets that dont fit into the long term plan or assets that may depart eithe way for nothing. Should they deal blackwood if they get a very good price? YES, of course. Granny? Yes, too (although Id like a resign in the summer). But, trading them so that the team can lose more? Terrible. Signing crappy UFA's to big money deals in order to stink? No way.
In the next year or two, the current prospect pool will be ready to step in. We need to start prepping for that turnaround now, not for 5 years from now.

That loaded prospect pool from rebuilding teams dries up very quickly with almost all of the guys you mentioned unlikely to be long term members of the team.
Nobody is suggesting purposely tanking, but yes this is still the least talented team in the NHL with the worst underlying metrics. Blackwood and Granlund aren't sticking around a team like this unless they get overpaid (something the Sharks also shouldn't be doing), and the only logical thing to do is trade them.
Plenty of the best players in NHL history started on bad teams, a top 3 pick would be immeasurably more valuable than a couple extra sniffs of blood to beat out Chicago for last place (especially in a top-heavy draft like this one looks to be so far).
Sharks don't have enough depth, especially at D. They need to tank for one more season and let the D men start showing up.

I think he looks great on the wing with Celebrini. I just don’t see him being great at center.

If they get Schaefer this year, they're ready to go imo. Walman and Liljegren should still be here in 3 years, Dickinson and Schaefer will have made the NHL and then some combo of Mukh/Cagnoni/Pohlkamp/Thrun/Thompson may fill out the bottom. Don't think it's a particularly crazy projection.

Not sure How Dickinson and Schaefer will fare but they do have Star potential especially Schafer though Dickinson is really putting up the numbers not that he didn't as a 17-18 year old...
