Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

It’s so much fun to do a roster projection with the #1 overall in our hands. This scenario is if we sign both Celebrini and Smith.
Also Logan Couture is back baby! Graf is a still a maybe too.
It's a very prospect heavy projection, so it's not the most realistic. But I feel some players will push for spots.

We definitely need a top 4 d-man (or two) this summer, but I'd also like us to target Burns next summer. He'd be 40, in elite shape, and would be our best PP option. He's currently better than any RHD available this summer, particularly of the offensive variety. Two seasons from now he's probably a 18 minute offensive/PP specialist, but still worth considering.

Not a bad guy to have as a mentor for whoever our top 5 d-man pick is (unless BPA is a F), and we wouldn't have to pay a huge amount or sign him to massive term. I think he's also better than

Burns could be retired by then. Definitely shouldn't be playing him almost 20 mins/game.

I think I’m ready to move on from ex-Sharks players. I don’t particularly want Burns or Karlsson back, I want this team to move forward now.

The big fish I would move #14 (in a package) for is Martin Necas. I don't know what the Hurricanes plan to do with him. They have some cap flexibility but also need to replace half their defense. Might not hurt them to acquire a legit starter who isn't old and hurt all the time too.

Even though they're firmly in their contention window it seems like they are hesitant to move picks and prospects so they will likely prioritize replenishing what was sent to Pittsburgh in the Guentzel trade. Maybe 14 + 42 + Ferraro + one of Bystedt/Halttunen/Edstrom + one of Cagnoni/Lund/Havelid for Necas + Drury?

jMoneybrah kind of described one of the big issues with it, but it's just problematic and I have anxiety disorder and I get frustrated fighting with it then I just don't want to deal with it so I avoid it. Last time I did it a few years ago I just could not get the game to play for the freaking life of me, either it wouldn't load, it'd give me the blackout error, or the game just wasn't even listed in the dumb app to open. Plus I have to remember to turn off the VPN on that device or my wife will get all upset that something else isn't working the way she expects, and if I setup of the VPN on my router obviously that causes other issues.

I did finally setup a pfsense router with a special rule that enabled VPN ONLY for traffic to ESPN/NHL but then AT&T changes something and my private router stopped working and I had to switch back to their crap router... you get the point, it's just a massive, massive, stupid, hassle.

I'd take out Bystedt/Edstrom/Haltunnen and Drury out of that. They're younger and bigger.

I like the idea of Drury as a long term 3C behind Celebrini and Smith but I'd do that.

The argument against Necas would basically be "then why didn't we just keep Timo?" but Necas is coming off a not amazing year and should have a significantly lower acquisition cost than what we received for Timo, for the same reason he can also be signed to a much team friendlier deal (Troy Terry comp?), he's 2.5 years younger than Timo and is a right shot RW which we lack both on the roster and in the system.

They'll have some tough decisions to make. #1 priority has to be signing Jarvis long term. After that it might come down to Guentzel vs. Necas.

I agree Jarvis is top priority. I think choosing Necas over Guentzel is the way to go for them since you're getting more value out of a long term deal through Necas than Guentzel. They're getting Morrow to probably slot into their 2nd pairing RHD and have the other top four spots under contract still so they can go cheap on the depth defensemen to backfill what they're losing with Chatfield, Deangelo, and Skjei. They can also buyout Kotkaniemi and Kuznetsov to save 6 mil where those guys are 4th liners playing occasional extra shifts. I think there's enough room to deal with it where they're only going to lose Guentzel.

My understanding is that Reno is still in "NBC Sports California" and Sharks territory, even after the VGK expansion. Thus, if Spectrum in Reno decided to stop carrying NBC Sports California, that's simply their choice and that won't change blackout rules.

It’s a little more confusing than that. We’re just on the California side up here and we do get the Sharks games on NBC…except when we play Las Vegas. Those games are broadcast on the NSN for some reason…

They do but I think a lot of them are probably already made. Pesce is likely gone because Morrow is coming in. The forwards could all come back but I think Teuvo will probably price himself out. Noesen probably should price himself out since he's never gotten a big contract and he's doing a lot to earn one but on most teams, he's still a 4th liner. I think they'll find a way to keep Martinook as long as he doesn't ask for more than like 3 mil. Drury will get re-signed. I think their tough decisions are going to be guys like Kotkaniemi and Kuznetsov. Kotkaniemi seems obvious but buyouts are always a tough pill to swallow especially given the circumstances around Kotkaniemi. Kuznetsov is doing alright with his fresh start but he can't be depended on and makes too much if you're not going to use him as a top nine winger replacement for anyone who bounces.

If they both decide to stay 2 and 3 years after the draft, good chance neither are going to play with the Sharks then.

I think this is right, but I also think that they will both sign after their Soph years and join the Sharks as soon as their season is over in 2025. With both of them in the pipeline and even more prospects that are exciting coming, plus Grier as a player's GM and San Jose as a once-proud franchise in a rebuild, I think it would be extremely surprising if they decided to try to wait it out, play 2 more years in college just so they can sign elsewhere (or force a trade).

They should know whether it gets announced or not is another matter. If neither wants to play in San Jose to start next season, I'd pass on Stamkos and eat another bad season seeing little in way of young players getting experience at the NHL level.

If they decide the year after that to play their junior year in college, it's time to look at trading them.

If both players return to college, I’d think it’d make convincing Stamkos to sign pretty difficult. It already being a flight of fancy, but not being able to at least pitch Stamkos on playing with at least one of Celebrini or Smith seems like it would be a non-starter from his end.

It's pretty funny thinking back on how much praise DW got for "fleecing" Toronto out of Barabanov and at the end of the day his Sharks tenure ends up being completely worthless.
