Granted, he's probably the weakest player on this list (in terms of all-time ranking). But he's still in very good company.

Some strong players who didn't qualify for this list - Brian Leetch, Borje Salming, Scott Niedermayer, Erik Karlsson, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Shea Weber, Mark Howe, Rod Langway

As far as I can tell, Kucherov is the first player to be named a year-end all-star with a unanimous vote since Jarome Iginla in 2002. (There have been plenty of close calls though).

I can't guarantee that this is a complete list, but here are the unanimous all-stars I've been able to find (going back to expansion in 1968):
  • Bobby Orr (1970, 1971, 1974, 1975)
  • Wayne Gretzky (1984, 1985, 1987)
  • Guy Lafleur (1975, 1976)
  • Tony Esposito (1970)
  • Phil Esposito (1971)
  • Steve Shutt (1976)
  • Ray Bourque (1987)
  • Brett Hull (1992)
  • Mario Lemieux (1993)
  • Paul Coffey (1995)
  • Eric Lindros (1995)
  • Al MacInnis (1999)
  • Chris Pronger (2000)
  • Jarome Iginla (2002)
  • Nikita Kucherov (2024)

Someone voting for Zibanejad over McDavid last year was certainly a choice.

That's a charitable way to phrase it!

Players who missed a unanimous all-star selection by a single vote (after Iginla's unanimous selection in 2002):
  • Ovechkin in 2008 (extra first place vote went to Zetterberg; Ovechkin was left off one ballot entirely)
  • Lidstrom in 2008 ("easier" because there are two first team votes for defensemen; he finished 2nd on the last ballot)
  • Price in 2015 (extra first place vote went to Dubnyk; Price finished 2nd on the last ballot)
  • Kucherov in 2019 (extra first place vote went to Kane; Kucherov finished 2nd on the last ballot)
  • McDavid in 2021 (extra first place vote went to Crosby; McDavid finished 2nd on the last ballot)
  • McDavid in 2023 (extra first place vote went to Zibanejad; McDavid finished 2nd on the last ballot)

So, Matthews with 69 goals didn’t even make in the All Star teams ?
You’re going to honestly argue that he should have been there over MacKinnon and/or McDavid?

Ok where is the outrage that kucherov got eleven 5th place votes? God knows this place is not slow to throw a hissy fit when a canadian gets shafted

I feel like the people who vote should have their vote shown to know who the donkey's are who throw votes away.

For example, the dummy who had MacKinnon 5th on his MVP ballot is a muppet and should be barred from voting again.

Yeah, shit like that should result in an immediate and permanent revocation of voting privileges. I don’t understand the small number of PHWA members who every year just insist on making a mockery of the voting process.

Individual ballots got released

One person left MacKinnon off their Hart ballot (Seth Roraburgh of the Pittsburgh Tribune).

Three left Kucherov off their Hart ballot (Jonathon Bernier of the Montreal Journal, Chris Miller of Minneapolis Star Tribune, James Mirtle of the Athletic)
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Seth Rorabaugh continues to give McDavid very little support for the Hart. (It makes you wonder if he's trying to do his small part to protect Crosby's legacy).

Here's a summary of how Rorabaugh has ranked McDavid for the Hart:
  • 2018: he didn't include McDavid (who was named on 79 out of 164 ballots).
  • 2019: he didn't include McDavid (who was named on 110 out of 171 ballots).
  • 2020: he didn't include McDavid (who was named on 96 out of 170 ballots).
  • 2022: he didn't include McDavid (who was named on 190 out of 195 ballots).
  • 2023: he was the only voter (out of 196) who didn't give McDavid a first place vote (he ranked him 5th)
  • 2024: he didn't include McDavid (who was named on 190 out of 194 ballots)
I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, there should be freedom of thought. There's no point in having so many voters if we expect all of them to vote the same way. On the other hand, we need to watch out for indications of bias.

The bottom line is, Rorabaugh has ranked McDavid in the top four just once in the past seven years. (In his defense, he gave him a 1st place vote in 2021 - literally every voter did that). I think Rorabaugh's voting record deserves an explanation.
