Prospect Info: [2023 - 197th] Luke Mittelstadt (NCAA - University of Minnesota)

I was too lazy to do specifics.
I ask because at first glance Engstrom looked like an overager. But actually his birthdate is close to the september cutoff, so he was drafted in the first draft he was eligible for.

correct, if Engstrom was born 32 days sooner he would have been drafted in '21.

I don’t mind overagers, but only in later rounds. I just don’t like the “we pick them because they are older and fit our window” thing. Mittlestadt is an ok pick for where he was drafted.

Sure, maybe some can surprise and have an impact but most times they don’t. There’s a reason they were passed over in older drafts.

Then again, the same could be said about first year eligible players, not many end up making the show in later rounds.

I just want them to pick the player who they think will be the best in 3-5 years, not follow a philosophy because it fits their narrative.

We weren't the only team going in on multiple overages or goalies.

This draft just wasn't that deep for one, but was top heavy.

The other thing is that these are still the covid kids, so teams are banking on some of these players development being delayed.

I think they’re looking at progression curves of players to see who is still progressing and what rate.

In that context it can make sense to draft late-bloomers overagers since you have more data (Davidson for example) but at the risk of mistaking development progress vs simply being older then your competition.

Any other prospects named Luke who are brothers of NHLers?

Want to do some advanced scouting of Habs picks.

Is Luke McDavid a thing?

Probably already news, but Jackson LaCombe and Brock Faber are gone. Mittlestadt should be a top 2 dman Minnesota, so a higher production should be likely

Pretty much. I don't know all their D, but my guess Minnesota will go with a Mittlestadt - Chesley top pairing.

Last year, both Chesley and Mittlestadt were freshmen, Mittlestadt put up a little more than double the points Chesley did (21 pts in 38GP for Luke, 10 pts in 36 GP for Ryan).

Granted, Mittlestadt is a year older, but Chesley was taken early in the 2nd round in 2022 while Luke went undrafted. And while Luke was drafted a year after, he was taken in the 7th round.

I'm not saying that to put Chesley down. I'm saying it to prop up Mittlestadt.

He might continue the tradition of 7th round picks working out after Evans, RHP & Primeau (jury's still out on him).

I asked the question in the dev camp thread but didn't get much reaction : Is there any hope for this guy?

He didn't stand out at all in today's game.
