I was about to ask if it was possible that Tapia doesn't suck.

Then I looked and he's still sporting a .664 OPS, a wRC+ of 88, and a -0.2 fWAR. can't even say that his 1st half is dragging his 2nd half down because ye gods his August stat line is obscenely awful (OPS .389 and wRC+ of 8 (not a typo))

So he still kinda sucks. He just doesn't suck as much as he did earlier in the season except for that bit a month ago where he really sucked.

Zimmer's WRC+ is probably better over that time frame if you include his stint with the Phillies.

If I'm Pete Walker I sit down with Kikuchi the week after the season ends and I figure out how they can spend the entirety of the off-season rebuilding him and fixing him. Nothing off the table, no changes out of bounds, get a sports psychologist in the room to work with him, refuse to allow him to blow it off or suggest demotions or other self-sacrificing options instead of confronting the problem. Get his head sorted out so he can have a shot to make the team next year or else he will spend the season in Buffalo (or possibly see if he just wants to go home and probably get better results in NPB where his flaws aren't as detrimental)

The toolbox is intriguing enough to be worth the shot at redemption since he's got 2 more years on his contract. But he should be treated as someone who's future contributions would only be gravy on top of what the team does under the assumption that he won't be a factor until proven otherwise.

Jeff Blair says Tapia is a starting OF in the playoffs for the Jays. Says he would start him over Gurriel. I’m not sure but if he keeps playing like this, I wouldn’t disagree.

Brings a different element and having Gurriel on the bench wouldn’t be a bad thing.

He's basically had the exact same season as Grichuk: super streaky, below average offensive production (both about a 90 wRC+), not very good OF defense, basically replacement level overall.

I had hoped Tapia could figure something out and be better (and I definitely expected better defense out of him) but that trade has definitely worked out since they saved some money and got a decent prospect. Still, a better 4th OF next year would be nice.

Unironically the “clutchest” player on the Jays this year.

Zimmer is 35 on the season. 32 with the Jays, 53 with the Phillies for 9 games. In March/April he put up a -28 in 11 games, but since then he's never had a monthly total lower than the 40s (but also never higher than 74 in a handful of July games)

Kikuchi going to take Romanos job now

I think that's buying way too much into a few good games.

Gurriel's a much better hitter and their D is a wash at worst (at best Gurriel is more valuable simply because of his unusually good arm for LF)

Tapia's role would be to come off the bench for speed or to pinch hit if someone is struggling.

5-4 in the last 9 games against TB, solid all things considered.

I think that Tapia actually looks good when he has that opposite field stroke going.

Gurriel is better than Tapia and it isn’t really that close.

2.7 WAR/162 player for his career who is playing at that level again this year vs. a replacement level player.

Rocky start at the Trop but getting a split in a 4 game series is a win overall.

Home field advantage against either Tampa or Seattle is absolutely massive

Got the split which is what I wanted. It was looking bad after the first 2 games but 2 big wins after that.

FFS Houston, you had one job.

On the plus side maybe Tampa completely blows it down the stretch and the Orioles sneak in.

To those that were saying Jays are getting swept or winning only 1 should believe in this team more.
To be fair, it looked like they were going to get swept or win 1 game at best when they lost the first 2 games to spot starters and then had to deal with Rasmussen and McClanahan In the final 2.

No doubt Gurriel is the better player over his career and this year but got to play whos hot in the playoffs. Biggio has had a better season than Merrifield but Merrifield gets the start because he is hot.

Having the lefty bat who can be a threat on the bases is great in the playoffs. Gurriel will be coming back from a hamstring injury which won’t be easy. Plus he has been known for his bonehead plays in the field. Can’t have that in a wildcard round. Might make sense to ease him back.

Either way, Tapia will contribute to the team, in the lineup or from the bench.

Now that you say it, reminds me of Jays starting Ezekiel Carerra in RF in 2016 playoffs.
