This is a new one. Kessel’s Iron Man streak scared some clubs off, per LeBrun.

Florida’s experience with Yandle last season must have been in mind.

Marc Staal is holding on, probably re-signs with the Wings. He can’t skate for shit, but somehow he’s still effective. Rarely makes mistakes.

Every year, there is a collection of notable names on clear sellers that don't get moved for a variety of reasons. The cap may not allow for it. Clubs may want to keep their veterans for the rest of the year and possibly into the future. Sometimes, the player just isn't wanted by a contender.

2022's class includes:

P.K. Subban
Phil Kessel
Anton Stralman
Loui Eriksson
Colin Miller
Danny DeKeyser
Calvin de Haan
Chris Tierney
Joonas Korpisalo
Martin Jones
Marc Staal

Who will continue in the NHL next season? Who are we seeing the last of?

Miller was injured and was rushed off IR to see if he was ready to play. Had he played since the beginning of the month he probably woukd have gotten traded.

Most teams did have the cap space to even take on sub an withretention. Since he was retained befire he can only be retained one more time taking him to $3M or so.

same cap issue with Kessel. He got retained by Toronto. A max retrntion dtill has him over $3M. Nobody has that space.

Philly should have taken the 5th rounder for Jones!

Although that would have eaten up cap space and maybe led to us not getting Kulak or Brassard

I'd rather have a healthy NHL backup for these last 20 games. 10 of those games are back to backs.

Kessel just had a baby. Trading him and making his family move with a newborn, or making him leave his newborn for the rest of the season would be messed up.
In other words we're all shocked he didn't get traded.

You need to remember this is the same team that traded John Scott to the Habs so they could send him to the minors In St John's, which is probably the furthest & most inconvenient place from the NHL, because he wouldn't stand down from participating in the All-Star game that the fans had voted for him to be the captain of the Western Conference team.

His wife was also pregnant during this whole ordeal & gave birth to twins shortly after that All-Star game so yeah, nobody should be all that surprised if they had dealt Kessel just because he had a newborn. We all know they just DGAF.

Different management though.

Honestly, the real reason is probably that no one wanted him. Most contenders don't need one dimensional offensive players, they want players that can defend and play tough minutes.

I don't think that makes any difference.

Montreal's management was the same until a few weeks ago & I don't think they made the change because they wanted a new more empathetic & caring management team.

Its kind of funny, but they actually did want a more empathetic and caring management (or at least management that gives off that impression). Its why they replaced their media relations executive too and beefed up community outreach oriented departments.

Really, guys like Kessel just don't have value as rentals.
