My issue with that logic is that a prospect's rating is thus dependent on other players. Levi's status as a prospect should be based only on Devon Levi, not on UPL/Portillo/Leinonen. Likewise, Savoie shouldn't be judged by the presence of Ostlund/Kulich/Quinn/Peterka/etc.

I also think the higher variance in possible outcomes for Levi (because as we know goalies are voodoo) naturally means goalies get ranked a little lower.
Fair comments. But I look at these lists from the perspective of the Sabres, as a Sabres fan. Everybody has different ways of prioritising. Savoie is also early on in his development & is something of a boom/bust type - I'll bet Rosen tanks in these standings after just one year & it's possible the likes of Savoie & Ostlund could go the same way in future.

One thing i expect the results of these polls to show is the horrific state of our defensive pipeline behind Power - especially if Johnson doesn't sign. It's unforgivable given the amount of draft ammunition we have used in recent years.

We have Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson, Jokiharju, and Bryson already on the roster. That's at least 3 of our top 4 for the foreseeable future.

But you still would have liked the courtesy 2nd round pick on a RD somewhere in the last couple drafts
What theyre missing on D is a proven vet to pair with Power on the right side. Everyone else is a kid still. What they’re missing at forward is like…most of three lines.

should they draft more? Yeah. Are they already in a position where a top prospect they invested a first round pick in is going to walk because he sees too many high end D his age and younger on the roster? Yeah.

I was just saying that in hindsight another RD vice one of the 2nd / 3rd round forwards the last few drafts would have made a lot of sense

Dahlin & Power - yes. Probably Samuelsson too. But that's only half of the group. Not to mention that all three are lefties.

Deciding you don't need to draft defencemen because you have Bryson & Jokiharju on your roster would be akin to deciding you don't need to draft forwards because you have Mittelstadt & Asplund on your roster.

Not to mention you already have the likes of Thompson, Tuch, Skinner, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, Krebs, and so on.

Such a dumb arguement to make on every level.

There will likely be a much bigger logjam at forward in the future than there will on D.

As @Old Navy Goat said - using some R2 picks (and/or one of the R1s this past summer) on RHD would have made so much sense.

If Johnson walks - it won't be because who else is on this team. It will be because he wants the free agent privelage of choosing who he plays for.

You clearly don't understand the typical mindset of a pro athlete.

I see similar arguments made about Portillo (because of Levi). That at least makes more sense than Johnson - because there is only ever one goalie on the ice - having two guys sign together could be messy. But the arguement that Portillo must believe he is so inferior compared to Levi that he'd sign somewhere else because of him is laughable.

3 of our top 4 is actually 3/4 of that group. You could do worse than Jokiharju and Bryson on the bottom pair.

Anyway, we have 2 U23 defensemen who project as #1s. You can sign/trade for guys to fill out the middle of the roster. Those aren't the players that are hard to acquire. We lack top-end talent at F. I have no issue with taking as many swings as possible there.

We need more D in general in the pipeline because we have no idea what the roster will look like in 4-5 years when guys we draft now are going to be impact players. Maybe there are changes from trades/free agency. Maybe young guys we have now stagnate in their development. Maybe there are injuries (hopefully not, but we've seen many promising careers derailed by a bad injury). We can't predict what the team will look like then, so having players at all positions in the pipeline is necessary. We've finally shored up the goalie pipeline, and we've got real depth at F, but D (both LD and RD) could use some buffing for sure.
