Wheeler put out his Top 100 (and 88 honorable mentions) yesterday. Since our front office typically aligns with Wheeler, I thought this would be a good start to the draft conversation.

Guys to watch
Miroshnichenko: potential top 5 talent but his Lymphoma diagnosis has made his drafting spot a mystery. How far does he drop? We took one potential 1st rounder with health concerns before.

Jack Devine: Wheeler has him at 37 but most mocks have him as an early 3rd rounder. Devine had a lot of hype as a 17 year old but didn’t put up a lot of points in Denver. Can we use that to get a potential top 6 forward late in the 2nd? Denver was a stacked squad and Devine got 4th line minutes.

Sam Rinzel: late rising mobile 6’4 RHD. Seen as a long term project and committed to Minnesota. Raw tools says he could be a top 4 RHD.

Kasper Kulonummi: probably more of Francis pick but a solid a steady defender who is balanced in his game. He is a smooth skater and eats minutes on the right side of the defense because of his solid positioning. A DeMelo type probable third pair guy. We may not take him because of it but he seems like a very solid pick with Chicago’s 3rd rounder. Add some good defensive depth for us.

Later rounds: Oskar Asplund. Wheeler really likes the guy and aim not seeing him in most mocks. His defense needs work but his offense projects to be top 6 capable.

Miko Matikka: big, goal scoring winger who skates well. Injuries over the last 3 years and the pandemic have prevented him from having long stretches of success to increase his draft profile

Pronman has Lane Hutson going to Carolina at #60 which would be a dream scenario. He is going to fall because he is 5'8". But his raw skill is the highest among any defensemen in this Draft. Similar to Scott Morrow last year who fell due to playing in prep school his Draft year.

I don't see Hutson falling to #60 though. Most mock drafts have him in the 1st round. I do believe he would be high on the Canes radar though.

Pronman also had the Canes getting Trikozov at #71 and Grudinin at #124 which are two more swing-for-the-fences picks. Both of those players would be good picks at #60.

While I'd love to have him, I can't see Miro falling that far.

Wheeler thinks that Russians will be dropped to the bottom of many team's tiers for fears of them not coming over to NA. Given Carolina's success with Kochetkov and Ponomarev this year maybe they feel more confident taking advantage of that position.
I'd have no problem with this and it fits our MO. But I'd be shocked if teams like Tampa, Washington, Colorado don't also try to take advantage of that as well. We've been drafting more Russians in recent years than we have historically, yes. But still not as much as some other teams, who I doubt will be scared off.

True. With guys like Bear, Sellgren, Keane, and possibly even TDA to trade we might get another pick before 60. Sellgren and Keane wouldn’t get one by themselves more than likely but still options to add picks or move up

ngl, I'd love to pick up a couple more 2nd's.

Hutson has been on my radar for a while. He's a guy that does everything right and if he was 6'0 he'd be a top 10-15 pick, There really aren't the concerns about his defense like there were with D-Fens and Honka when we took them, so it comes back to 5'8 is 5'8. Only guy in the league that size on D is Spurgeon. The question is going to be who from about 25 on is going to take a swing at him before he gets to us. I put him as a light possibility to get to us.

Lambert's another guy I expect to free-fall a bit from where Wheeler has him, though IMO no chance in hell he's there for our 2nd. MIGHT get to the 2nd round but he'll go early on day 2 to a team that had multiple firsts if he gets there. IF we trade up he might be an option, but that goes against our teams MO of late.

Trikozov is another guy I'm looking at in the 2nd or in the 3rd with Chicago's pick. Normally he'd be an early 2nd type propsect. High upside winger, but the Russian factor is certainly going to be back in play this draft with rumors that some teams aren't even really going to give much consideration to prospects from the country. Good opportunity to get a guy that's going to make other teams look like idiots in a few years.

Grudinin is another guy that I'm looking at for the 4th or 5th that has the same Russian factor disadvantage at play. A bit undersized (5'10), LHD but solid on the puck and a good 4-way skater.

Kinda sad we don't have a 1st this year, but unlike a few teams who gave up their first for 20-30 games from a player, we will have our guy for 9 years of control. So even if Kotkaniemi is a 3C during that whole time and never gets better, that's phenomenal value for a late 1st anyway.

But damned if I won't miss staying up late just to get to our pick, taking the max time, calling a time out, taking more time than the time out, and then trading the ****ing pick down until tomorrow anyway.

Which you wouldn't see anyway until AFTER the inevitable commercial break

Sucks that the 1st round is on a Thursday now, but when we don't have a 1st anway, I don't feel the need to stay up all night to watch it.

Just have to hurry home from work to see round 2-7 on Friday.

It’s weird to me that rounds 2-7 are during the day on Friday. I’ll still follow along at work but I enjoyed it when it was on Saturday previously

I got a night shift on both nights and was really eagerly looking forwards to it... until @spockBokk reminded that we don't have a first*.

* We got the 2018 first, yes, but there's not much of that new toy excitement in him.

This is what I'm talking about. Take advantage of non-hockey situations which cause teams to hesitate on the BPA. Take huge swings on guys who may or may not be able to come to North America. If they don't, **** it. That's no worse than a garden variety miss on a late 2nd. But this is where you end up looking like geniuses for drafting the next Datsyuk.
