I thought the Semi where the South Korean was DQ'ed for to me was just a great pass and coincidentally put through 2 Chinese skaters into the A final was a terrible call. In the final I thought both the Hungarian and Chinese fouled but only the Hungarian was called and the gold given to China.
I'll have to watch these races in the evening (after I watch a replay of the ski jumping mixed).

I hate the rules and how they are enforced. Granerud couldn’t participate in this even for Norway because of problems in the individual competition.

I get that they push the limits, but there has to be a better way. Do like with boxing or something.
They probably jumped with that suit already during the season. Once ok, that suit shouldn't be disqualified. For all I care leave them with the organisation.

I see the Norwegians are claiming that they were doing the measurements in a slightly different way. I know they actually "practice" in standing in certain ways during measurements.

If there is one jumper getting disqualified - then fine. Someone might have just pushed it slightly too far. When you got three of the top nations + Norway getting disqualified then something is just off.

Looks like the polish anccaptence inspector, who is responsible for women ski jumping allowed a bit to much during the season with suits. The male inspector did nothing wrong to disqualify the atlethes. After he found the first "wrong" suit. He couldnt press an eye for other ski jumpers. He never thought he will find so many mistakes.
The timing was really bad. They should have done a test in front of Olympics. That wasnt advertisement for ski jumping.
Anyway nerver thought i would see Canada wins a medal at a ski jumping team event. Happy for them.

I cannot say who is right or wrong formally in the end, but you cannot change the criteria like that - certainly not under the Olympics. If there is a precedence on how things are done obviously athletes will adjust accordingly.

Even if he's technically right, you can't just change criteria during the season like that. Those athletes thought that everything was ok. The coaches as well. Those suits passed before. And on the biggest stage all that. I wouldn't blame anyone if they protest or just go home.

Well. More gold medals than both Sweden and Denmark in the last Summer Olympics. We got Hovland, Ruud, Haaland etc being among the best in the world in “non” Olympic summer sports. For most of Norway summer sports are more important, but of course winter sports are relatively more popular than most places I guess. Generally though Norwegians are just more into sports than any other country I know (even if it is changing as kids are not as active as they used to be - probably not unique to Norway).

And right now only one Swede got a better PPG score than Zuccarello

Only just seeing this replay now. Apparently barely grazing anyone in a race where China finished 3rd is a disqualification so they can be bumped up to 2nd and advance but sliding a race marker into someone elses skates on purpose causing them to fall is completely fine

That's sneaky. I didn't see that at all.

Short track speed skating is just an event that produces controversy. Time means nothing, it’s about finishing ahead of your competitors. No lanes to skate in. High speed, close quarters, just a reality of the sport.

The Canadian that fell was advanced in this race, but the blame was placed on the other Canadian. To be fair the other Canadian did try to pass too tight on the inside and caused some contact with the Chinese skater. But the reason the skater fell was clearly because of a thrown marker. The Chinese skater should have been DQ'd as well.

I know it looks like she did it on purpose, but I find it really hard to believe that the Chinese skater could be leaning almost 45 degrees making a turn with someone right beside her with her arm in front of her competitor and trying not to make either of them fall AND STILL have the presence of mind to flick a marker directly into someone's skates in front of her to make that person fall.

That's ALOT of stuff to be doing in a couple of seconds and if she was able to pull it off I think I'd advance her just for being so skilled!

This is Brunelle's first Olympics...
And already her second disqualification.
That is quite a start.

Also...
I just learned that Claudia Pechstein still skates...
And this is her 8th Olympics.
She was also there to see her 20 years old record finally fall.

Along with her sporting excellence...
She is also known as one of the biggest asshole in the sport.
Throughout her career...
People criticize her headhunting style...
Because she would focus on one target...
And just beat her time.
I also just read an article that criticized her choice as the flag bearer...
Mainly because she and her partner clashed with everyone in the German Speed Skating Federation.
Frankly...
She is something else.

Eileen Gu won Big Air with a gutsy 3rd jump.
Apparently she has never attempted it in competition before...
And she still pulled it out to get the gold.

She has a lot of pressure on her...
Since she is basically the unofficial face of the Games...
As her image is everywhere...
And China and many major brands have promoted her heavily...
And so far she has delivered.
She has two more events to go too...
Where she is also a medal threat.

She has a really interesting backstory.
She was born and raised in the United States...
But she decided to compete for China at 15...
Because her mom is Chinese.
She is 18 now...
But the way she handles the press feels like someone who has 20 years of experience.
Reporters have tried to ask her about sensitive issues...
Like human rights...
And Peng Shui...
But she sidestepped them effortlessly.

Frankly...
A lot about her does not make sense.
China does not allow dual citizens...
But there is no indication she gave up her citizenship...
Like other recruited athletes.
She is also very well-protected...
Because when she makes mistakes...
Netizens will tell other people to let up on her.
Meanwhile...
Zhu Yi...
Another recruited athlete...
Got bullied relentlessly for her mistake in figure skating.

What do you mean with headhunting?
Also, she's not the only one taking on the federation. Over the years a bunch of athletes have which makes me believe that there might be something rotten. Unfortunately, the glory days of German speedskating are over so it's not covered anymore so I don't know what's up with the federation.

I explained it.
She focuses on a rival...
And then she solely tries to beat her time.
Personal bests are never her priority in most races.
I heard that term years ago in passing...
And it really stuck with me.
Personally...
I have no problem with that approach...
Because I still find it very difficult to do...
But people have criticized her for it.

While I am not familiar with the German Ice Skating Federation...
I believe you...
Because that is the case with most Sports Associations around the world.
That said...
Pechstein is an asshole.
I respect the hell out of her...
And she is one of my favourite skaters...
But everyone knows that.
Pechstein does not have the best reputation...
Nor does she care.

Pechstein is certainly abrasive. Remember the "Zickenkrieg" between her and Friesinger? Embarassing.
Yeah, I have no probs with that timeapproach either. Winning races is important for racers and it's not like she didn't have records.
I had a poster of her hanging on my wall after Lillehammer... I wouldn't do that today.

She has mellowed out in recent years...
But yeah...
There is no way I would put her poster up.

I like her...
But not that much.

The men's single biathlon is quite a race. Fillon Maillet faster than the young Boe is a bit of a surprise. Smolski's biggest success. Seeing Gow so high up is nice as well.
