Prospect Info: 2022 8OA, Marco Kasper

I somewhere on Twitter during the season a user referring to him as a "broken wind up toy". He just keeps going and going and going and won't stop. That analogy has stuck with me. If he doesn't beat you in a race, he will beat you in a marathon

Likely not gonna be a guy around the league that other fans appreciate, but that's fine by us because he'll be plenty valuable when we're watching him tilt the ice game after game

That's a guy you'll need for a playoff series. He will wear the opposite guys out.

To me the 7-11 group all had very similar seasons. Hard to pick one guy to stand out from Stankoven, Bolduc, Blake, Kasper and Samoskevich.

4th most of forward ice-time kind of puts him in front of that group with equal scoring. 7th best overall imo.

Hutson and Wolf were the only non-forwards at Top10.

I mean, that’s not exactly amazing.

Im just saying finishing 10th place in rookie voting is “fine” but not something to really celebrate for a 9OA.

Though I’m glad he’s turned out way better than I thought he would so far.

I am thrilled to have the 7th most productive rookie who, by the end of the season, was looking good as a 2C.

You should make it your mantra that Danielson will never have enough offense, ASP will never adjust to North American ice, and Buchelnikov will take forever to leave the KHL and play for Detroit.

Based on your Kasper predictions, the Wings could use some good news this summer.

Not that it matters if he finishes 10th or 7th but I think it's pretty easy to pick out Kasper as the standout.
Doing what he did while playing so much center (especially down the stretch), being a fairly regular PKer, bringing physicality, having great defensive metrics etc. gives a clear edge compared to most other rookies who had far more sheltered roles.

Among rookies (min of 60 games played):
  • Tied for 2nd 5v5 TOI per game
  • Tied for 3rd for 5v5 goals.
  • 3rd for hits
  • 5th for blocks
  • 6th for shooting percentage.
  • 8th for assists.
  • 8th for defensive zone start percentage.
  • 9th for FO win perce
And that is why the value of this voting is often meaningless.

Michkov was dead last in defensive zone starts. On the one hand, not his game. But when you need to be sheltered to the tune of 60% of your zone starts, it really highlights just how one-sided his game is at this point. Same shooting percentage as Kasper though.

And really he was like 3rd/4th on FO win percentage for guys that actually played center this year and were routinely taking faceoffs. Really only Celebrini and Kulich were clearly ahead of him.

It lands different when you stop and think that he also hit 10th in the rookie list with basically only 1/2 of the season. Kasper found his game after Jan and didn't look back. I mean making top 10 only having scored 7 points by Feb 1st is pretty impressive honestly. Not sure how anyone could see this as a negative. If he had the same pace in the first 3 months he would be in the Calder conversation.
