Prospect Info: 2022 8OA, Marco Kasper

Shooting percentage is better than Larkin's during his rookie season, but a half a percentage point behind Ray's. Looks solid pretty much any way you slice the data.
Larkin a good comparable IMO. Kasper a lil more huskie i think and maybe larkin is a slightly better skater but kasper is a great skater as well.

He is better at playing centre than larkin was his 1st year.

That's factoring Kasper's cold streak coming to the Griffins with no camp and coming back from injury. Look at his last 25 games instead. It's a better indicator of who Kasper is and likely closer to Zary's 0.8ppg in his D+3. Also, Kasper is a LOT more physical than Zary.

I hate to say this but Cory Pronman said that Kasper reminded him of Sam Bennett. Similar height/weight, though Kasper is a much better skater currently, and I think he's a better playmaker. Both are pretty physical.
Sam Bennett 20yo season
81 GP
13 goals
13 assists
46.1% FOW
46 blocks
127 hits

Marco Kasper this season
67 GP
15 goals
15 assists
45.4% FOW
44 blocks
140 hits

Bennett took way more face-offs than Kasper, but look at that comparison. Not bad.

I see Kasper as a Jt Miller/Trochek type. Physical, two-way center who can produce. Miller and Trochek are 2 of the best at faceoffs but it took them a while to get there. It took them both a few years in the league before they were winning more than 50% of them.
He was pretty close to 50% before getting moved to center so I was curious to see how he would do getting more draws as a center. He was terrible at it in the first 3 games. I am pretty sure he was under 30% in each of them certainly under 30% in the 3 games combined but he must have worked on it because he has won more than he has lost in each of the last 3 games including going 10 of 17 (59%) tonight
Kasper has 13 goals in his last 33 games which is 30+ goal pace

You should count out those games under the former coach. He would be in the Calder-Discussion, if he wouldn't have been misused on the 4th line the first 25 games. You can argue that Kasper has been the best Rookie in 2025.
’best’ is probably a reach, but being behind only Celebrini/Hutson/Michkov is impressive nonetheless.

Eh idk kasper averages like 2 hits per game. Obviously that isn’t all that goes into being physical but he still is pretty physical.

He’s a rookie feeling the league out. Plus the rest of Detroit is a pretty timid team. If Ed and Watson aren’t on the ice he’s in the scrums solo.
I agree with both of you, and its kinda what I was getting at. Hes feeling out the league, but once that aspect comes back like he had in other leagues he'll be even better. He finishes his checks for sure, but he blew guys up fairly regularly in Sweden, and was scrumming it up, pissing guys off way more. Its better that hes focused on the hockey part anyways, get that down and then worry about the other stuff

Watson might be worth carrying on the 4th line next year to see if he can do for the Wings what he did for GR this year.

Unrelated Note - Kasper looks like Brendan Fraser in your profile pic lol
I'd be looking at some better options that can play more regularly but hes a good guy to have in the org for sure.
Probably Bennett at forward. Frederic if we want to sign a 4th liner who also isn't a bad player. On the blueline...Lindgren? But I'm not sure we're really getting a seider partner with him. That's if we want guys who aren't just tough but actively look to go out and bang.

I think Frederic could get paid, though, and I don't like the idea of us paying a premium for a guy we'd probably prefer on our fourth line.
Those are definitely a couple of the names... I would love Yzerman to get ahold of McBain but hes an RFA. Another one I would prefer big time over Watson is Tanner Jeannot. Thats a guy who can take a regular shift and absolutely kill people. Basically an all around better version of Watson

Only including the games under McLellan going back to Dec 29, it looks like over a full 82 game season Marco would have the following stats:

28 goals
50 points
63 blocks
188 hits
415 face offs taken

Not quite Calder caliber this season, but really freaking good for a 20 year old.

Since January he’s been terrific. 9th in rookie scoring with 30 points despite an ice cold 35 games to start the season. I’m overall very happy with the progress we’re seeing from him. If Kasper is in the 50 point range next year that should make the naysayers silent.

Kasper's development will be the major saving grace of this otherwise disappointing season. Aljo and Soderblom being the others.

Unless a miracle 9 game running coming up, but none of us should hold our breath.

Marco's far exceeded my expectation for him. And Im a Kasper slappy. Cant wait till we see what he can as he matures physically and plays a more playoff style game.

kasper a primary example why i dont want to make playoffs and draft 18th instead of 8th
This is probably a waste of my time, but do you realize in a year or two our depth at center could be: 1C: Larkin, 2C: Kasper, 3C: Danielson, 4C: Copp?

How many teams have that much quality depth at center? Why not get these guys some playoff hockey to help with their development?

If he plays lik he has in the new year, hes already exceeded a lot of peoples expectations on this board after box score watching. Withhis all around game thats already a solid pick at 8, but hes gonna get better
I got plenty of time for Jeannot and Bennett both. Pay them. We need players who aren’t p***yes to set the tone in this locker room.
When March rolls around and teams tighten up, it would be nice having some guys in the bottom 6 that will try putting the goalie into the net with the puck when the skill dries up a bit. Get a timely greasy goal or get a golaie off his game
Kasper is better at center than what Larkin was at the same age.
Definitely. Hes not as fast but hes wayyyy stronger at the same age. After this second half hes tracking to be as good or better than Larkin in my opinion. Slightly different players but still comparable enough that its easy to compare their impact.

Kasper is way more of a natural defensively too

i couldnt care less what peoples long held opinions are about ''development'' , the player is either going to eventually be good or not !!!!!! play off experience isnt going to turn a veleno into a larkin !!!!!!!!!!! and the sooner you pick each draft the higher the odds the players going to be good than not ! and this isnt just about center , its about every position . i want as early a pick as possible to get a chance at a jack smith or charbeneua . and youve no idea if obreins going to be a stud 1C surpasing kasper n dannyson or not , if we draft at say 12 and brass likes him add another center cuz it aint as if a center cant be moved to wing

Kasper produces while with Larkin and Raymond.
Kasper produces while with Kane and Cat.
Kasper produces while with Raymond and Rasmussen.
Kasper is 20 years old.
I think Kasper is going to be alright.
Put him between Ras and Tarasenko and he will not produce.
Most importantly he showed he could be first line center in the future. Hope they try same with Danielson next season
