Kasper started the season on the AHL roster, Edvinsson started on the Wings' roster. Kasper going to GR, even on paper, is being sent back. Edvinsson if assigned to GR, even on paper, would be a demotion. It may be a subtle distinction without a difference to outsiders, but it's logical within the context of the NHL workplace. Edvinsson has already earned his NHL salary, Kasper is still in the process of earning it. It would not have been a surprise if about a month ago the team had decided he wasn't ready to keep getting it.

Kasper has nothing to complain about and won't because A) he's not missing any games, he's happy to be there and making more than he would had he stayed in GR or already sent back; and B) he knows it amounts to very little salary lost, probably only temporarily, in the grand scheme of things and can be made up at his next contract if his agent makes a point of wanting the negotiated AAV going up one or two ticks after the decimal or a slightly higher signing bonus. He's not getting jerked around by anything except a CBA that allows teams to do it. Edvinsson on the other hand, if demoted on paper, would rightly be pissed off at the loss of pay. There is nothing to worry about here.

I am not sure how players get paid, but if its by game Kasper is getting a 5 digit check per game. It would be human to be erk'd but I would be surprised if he didn't understand and held any grudge over it since he is quite the team player, he must also know baring a career ending injury he is a millionaire in 2026.

Additionally, once the cap accrual stops at the TDL, I suspect the paper game will stop too, as there is no need to carry on. Sucks for the break in particular, but they still are making more than at GR fulltime, and I would not be surprised if they are getting a real sweet living allowance to cover two living spots while bouncing back and forth...

But yes, the key difference between Ed and Marco/Elmer is the callup versus having a roster spot at the start of the season. The ELCs are very restrictive, but I am sure the affected player are aware and on-board with it, especially in a year that they are gunning for a playoff spot and might make a TDL move.

It’s per day of the season with predetermined pay periods. (Monthly?)

His AHL salary is $82k. They don’t get paid in the offseason.

The point I’m making is this; if I had a contract like this and my boss was jerking me around to save a few bucks I wouldn’t have any real incentive to play nice in the next contract negotiations.
I mean for 1, you can't equate this to everyday jobs and everyday people.

And for 2, it is a known thing that teams do this with waiver exempt players. Kasper is not the first player that has dealt with this, and he won't be the last.

And for 3... again, Kasper should feel lucky he has played as many NHL games as he has this year... IMO.

In the end, I think that is just the reality of the situation and young players understand it...to a degree. I was reading an article a couple of days ago that talked about this and had a quote from the Stars front office and how they decided not to do this with Heiskinen when he was a rookie and they could have done it. It would have save them money, they wouldn't have been technically wrong to do it....but sometimes you don't want to do that to a player.

It also depends, if you have the cap space (which would grow) or if you are against LITR overage, then you don't get any advantage. The player will just lose the money.
