Well, I think the general manager should know that a certain player doesn't want to play for his organization. Like, it's his job. like call him before the trade deadline and find out if he'll sign at the end of the season or not?

I disagree. I think this is the highest his stock has ever been. He had two pretty rough years in college before everything came together this season, and he won the Hobey Baker over Zeev Buium and Ryan Leonard.

Both of those guys are more highly touted prospects than Howard and have already signed NHL contracts.

But now teams know he doesn't want to play for Tampa, so his value goes down, and they might be afraid that if a trade happens he won't sign with them either, so his value goes down even more.

If a team trades for him, they know they're getting him. That's going to be a condition for a trade to happen.

Or maybe Seattle didn't value Howard as highly as many on here seem to be. They also may have better uses for those picks. Howard isn't even a top 50 prospect, and likely didn't have amazing value to some teams at the deadline either. JBB no doubt planned on Howard signing, and burning the elc year. He had much more important things to concern himself with at that time than checking on Hkward's demands for playing time. He'll get good value for him, if that's the plan, provided he trades him to a team that is going to give him what he wants. There will be at least several, no doubt, but Tampa doesn't bend to unproven prospect demands like that, if that's what is happening here. If Howard was so confident in himself, I guess he should've signed the deal and earned his spot in camp/preseason. Oh well, moving on.
 
The contract should have been pretty standard. It had to be about going to Syracuse. Maybe JBB decided after dealing with him, that he has to trade him this summer. Just a note on his stats. Dylan Duke in his 3rd year at Michigan had 26 goals, 23 assists.. 49 points. Howard in his 3rd year had 26-26..53 points. Duke is in Syracuse. So was Geekie. I don't think you can start playing favorites with him. Hopefully we can get a good return.
 
i'm so glad we're getting more answers so we don't have to deal with all the posturing on how this is actually all tampa's fault and a huge blemish on our organization!!!!!

if isaac played ball he'd probably be getting playoff games with our current injuries but instead he'll sit at home and watch before he gets shipped off to Chicago, a team that's having trouble developing it's generational talent (let alone a one-dimensional winger)

I tried to take a middle ground in everything and share frustration as equally as I could among Howard and JBB because I didn't have any of the story. I'm glad I was wrong about JBB and Howard both.

We need to do a better job of getting our college players signed. Period. But it sounds to me Howard managed to do something that is stupider than the Lightning over-thinking the hell out of the easiest process ever.

I dont know if this could be the reason but this is my thought: what doesn't attracted him is we're an older team with a handful of years left to contend and he doesn't want to be stuck in the middle of a rebuild. He wants somewhere like Chicago maybe Philly,SJ and Anaheim that have a some young core pieces that right now have a future.

If our current group Kuch Hedman, ect were all in their early 20s, Howard would have no problem here and signed a while ago.

If that is the case, the way teams draft would have to change.
 
My thought process is that Howard (like former NTDP teammates Gauthier and McGroarty before him) got offended by what he perceived as the organization not treating him as a priority. There's a major sense of entitlement amongst NTDP guys/high end NCAA players because they get everything handed to them. A lot of blame on Howard being an entitled f***, if the truth is leaning in that direction.

I believe that Howard and BriseBois are guilty of very poor communication about what the plan was going to be earlier in the season. I wish BriseBois had just traded Howard at the deadline, as @Soul Assumption has alluded to.

That would be a bit short-sighted though. It's not like we're gonna fall off a cliff as soon as next season (in all probability). Hedman's getting a bit further along with age and might only have a couple more seasons near the top of his game but Kucherov/Point/Guentzel should still have several good years ahead of them. Perfect environment for a young player to get his start, playing competitive hockey in a winning environment and shielded from having to be seen as one of the leaders of the team just yet. And beyond that, who knows just what the situation would look like by the team the core of the team begins to "age out".

If you want to get your start in a lower-pressure environment on a rebuilding team, you could end up a Dylan Larkin who - aside from his rookie season on a cannon-fodder playoff team - is going to be 29 next season and hasn't played playoff hockey in almost a decade. We've seen plenty of failed rebuilds.

The NTDP being the default selections for the U18 is likely an issue. Canada doesn't really prioritize the tournament, so the US goes and stomps on everyone.

The NTDP is also a good USHL team finally, so it's not like they're getting beat down regularly anymore.

It's a shame that NCAA guys aren't able to go to regular training camps, and only compete in bubble wrapped development camps.

But player entitlement, and feeling they're better than the minor leagues, is a regular part of the minor leagues. Rookies are sometimes in for a shock when they get to Orlando and see that their teammates are just as good, if not better, than them. Even guys on ECHL contracts.

Dev camp could be a good first step for current pro players thinking of getting into coaching. Sometimes it's not the message, but the messenger. They can, as current pro players, maybe say the things they wish they heard.

Nah, this is pretty much all on Howard. Unless.he flat out had already told JBB that he wasn't ever going to play for Syracuse and that he wanted a roster spot guaranteed, which I doubt was the case at the deadline, then JBB had no reason to trade him at that time. Tampa, by some reports, was going to give him the elc and burn the year so he could get into the final two games. If he thought he was good enough to crack the roster full time next year, he could have bet on himself and won that spot in camp. Oh well, JBB will contact and be contacted by teams that will likely give him a spot, and he'll still get good value for him, likely at the draft. Howard can get his playing time, likely with a crllar dweller or close, and Tampa can get pucks/prospects to either use now or flip for additional help next season.
 
Howard is getting way too much credit here. He wants to step right into the NHL and is forcing the move. JBB shouldn’t have to report to Howard, the deadline roster moves we made basically blocked Howard from having a layup roster spot.

Absolving BriseBois of all blame is foolish. He's let a pretty high end asset burn value and will have to get below market value return if Howard isn't signed, which it looks like he won't be.

Now if BriseBois can somehow get an Ohgren or Yurov level asset back in a trade, then I'll sing his praises. Until then, I'm going to criticize him for not doing his job well enough.
