Prospect Info: 2022 31st Overall Pick | LW Isaac Howard

Realistically i could see us packaging him with the LA 2nd for either a higher-end 1st rounder maybe top 15, or going for a young D prospect on a team that needs a F prospect and could sacrifice a high end D prospect. I think a prospect swap is more likely than getting a 1st rounder back as it helps the team sooner than later but there is also the possibility of going after an established dman like Jordan Spence, Brandt Clarke, Bowen Byram, Cam York, Emil Andrae

"trade him for a top-4 NHL ready defenseman" lmao no team is dumb enough to do that for a winger so temper your expectations. Montreal is the exception and one of the biggest reasons was because Drouin was seen as one of the most offensively gifted prospect in years until McDavid in 2015. Howard barely ranked in the leagues top-50 prospects in his draft +2 year, Drouin was #1 across the board in 2014 (he ranked above the entire 2014 draft class).

I'd like to see him packaged for a roster upgrade but regardless I think the assets coming back for him are just going to be flipped in the near future barring an embarrassing playoff exit, I doubt we're holding onto a prospect long term or waiting 3+ years for an impact player as long as this team is looking competitive.

Fair point

I would do Howard + 26 5th to Calgary for Morin + 26 3rd.

Send him to one of the least desirable cities to play in and not even in the US. Morin is a 23 2nd round LD from the Q. 6'1 185, very good offensive numbers and would immediately be our best defensive prospect. Still a few years out but Hedman and McDonagh should have a few in them themselves so no rush for a LD.

Even if we trade Howard we are still pretty good for young forwards. Obviously Goncalves has taken a nice step this season to make himself an NHL player, good 3rd liner with some upside still. Geekie, who knows where he ends up but would guess 2nd liner. Then we have Gauthier, Duke, Huuhtanen and Finley in the waiting. Sure they don't have Howard's potential but we don't even know if Howard has that type of potential. We need to add some high end defenseman to the system.

Haha when did Howard turn into kovalev.
? Never

I was pointing out that Drouin was such a promising prospect that his failure to live up to it reminded me of Zherdev. And both reminded me at a much smaller level of how Kovalev never fully lived up to hus potential at all. All 3 have in common ridiculous skill that Howard doesn't have

Man kovalev definitely lived up to his potential, he just only exercised it when he felt like it.

Drouin was talented, but more a product of mackinnon. Perhaps. Hard to say as he never can stay healthy and no one knows how bad his wrists are.

Agreed on zherdev though.

Well the whole grab was how Howard as a prospect doesn't even have a fraction of the skill as Drouin. Zherdev and Kovalev just felt worth mentioning becuase they were the other guys who gave me that same "Holy shit. WOW!!" feeling too. The theme of not living up to a 100% of the potential felt like it tied it together

Sounds more like poor timing with everything and how much room we have for a player like him going forward. I mean we've seen our players go through the Syracuse route and why should he be different? Patience can be a really good thing in our system but not for everyone and if he has confidence that he can crack a top 6 somewhere then more power to him. Just not a guarantee here and usually have to prove yourself first. If we are smart we sign him first then look at options. It wouldn't be worst thing if he went the geekie route and dipped his toes in the league first and Syracuse later. But that might not be an option at this point..

I'm miffed at Howard and JBB alike. This guy is potenially going to be our only 1st round selection in 8 f***ing years and we can't even get him signed. It is ACTUALLY some of the stupidest shit I have ever seen
I really don't think the problem is JBB here.

This is not a highly touted prospect. He's the best/2nd best prospect in a bad prospect pool. He's had college success years after it tends to indicate anything. He's still a B level prospect.

Drouin being French played no small role in that trade. And let's not forget MTL signed him to an absurd deal.

Drouin's issues were always attitude related. (Later, health relates.) It's good to see him finally start to realize some of his potential. But man, given what happened, Cooper and management were very much vindicated in that whole ordeal.

Figuring out where to place Howard is tough. The type of team that would go most for a trade would be the type of team that has a hard time attracting free agents. Carolina, Anaheim, Winnipeg, Columbus, Buffalo, Seattle, etc.

There aren't really any teams clearly ready to bottom out. Columbus has a ton of pending free agents, but I don't think they'll want to take a step back.

The type of team that does make sense (NYI) ain't gonna put up with any of that.

They also tried to convince everyone including themselves that he was a center

Man that was funny, "Tampa was using him wrong" they even told him to bulk up and everything messing up one of his biggest assets.
He went from one of the fastest players in the league to just kinda-fast-maybe.

His career was one of pitfalls.

It's good to see him finally cashing in on some of his potential. Still a few years left to make a mark.

To quote a somewhat decent player: "I liked playing with Drouin, they kept giving me Killorn"
