The thing is since he wasn't on the Syracuse or Tampa roster at the time of the trade deadline the only way he can play in the AHL this year is on a ATO. I'm sure BriseBois would be fine with him playing a game or 2 to end the year but he would need to be on a active NHL contract so couldn't sign a ATO. So if he gets signed to burn a year off his ELC then he burns the chance to play in Syracuse. They probably want him to help Syracuse make the playoffs and play till they get eliminated before becoming a black ace. Seems like Howard doesn't want that and only wants to be on the NHL roster the rest of this season. So it's a game of chicken for the next week to see who blinks first.
Laval signed Jacob Fowler to an AHL SPC. They also signed Joe Dunlap out of The Ohio State University with a PTO.

I guess he doesn't see a way for top-6 minutes with Hagel and Guentzel here long term but that top LW spot isn't exactly locked to Guentzel who could easily play down and be fine on his own merits. Howard's going to be incredibly humbled if he's going to just choose a weak team to secure a roster spot, dudes not going to drive play in the NHL.

It looks like Cole Caufield didn't, but typically the Hobey Baker winner ends up around the max ELC.
I know it'll be close, what i don't recall is, if he goes that route, don't the bonuses on the contract also count against the cap up front or is that re-calc'd at the end of the year based on what performance bonuses they reached? I thought it was the latter but my brain no work so well these days.

That's a good question actually

@mouser

Do you happen to know this one?

Actually looking at puckpedia, I believe its the latter, AAV on recently signed ELCs is sub 1mil.

They're recalc'd. A team can surpass the salary cap (due to those performance bonuses) up to 7.5%. Anything beyond that gets carried over to the next year.

Cole Caufield really had a team friendly ELC. https://puckpedia.com/player/cole-caufield

The most recent signings may not have full information on potential performance bonuses yet.

ELCs add a tweak to understanding the cap. We typically associate cap hit and AAV as the same thing, but they're technically not.

Juraj Slavkovsky (picking on Montreal again) has a cap hit of 950k, but an AAV of $4.45 million, due to all the potential bonuses.

Does Howard even have any value if he’s saying that he’s going to free agency? Unless Bresbois trades him like right now why would anyone trade for him?

I think it'd be like most other trades where new contracts are involved. TB can allow Howard to speak to the other teams before a deal is made. He'd really be negotiating with other teams now, rather than waiting a year.

Yeah if another team can sign him. We are running out of time to incentivize Howard to do that though, he needs to play this season to use up a year on his ELC

He just won the Hobey Baker. He could flop or be injured next season. The best time for him to sign somewhere is now.

Howard being able to burn a year is also up to him. He's the one on the clock right now. He probably wants to go to some bottom of the barrel team, so they're missing the playoffs.

I don't know if an unsigned player, who gets their league rights traded after the deadline, would be eligible for the NHL playoffs. I'd think they would, but this is an edge case.

Maybe I’m not quite grasping the question, but the reason a team would trade a decent amount for him is because they want his rights- meaning they don’t want to enter want a bidding war. If all interested teams (let’s say there are 15) waited until he’s a FA, there’d only be a 6 or 7% chance a particular suitor would land him, with it likely costing them bigger bucks to outbid all the others.

Unless I’m greatly mistaken this is a Gauthier-type scenario. Philly got Drysdale in return.

I don't think that a free agent bidding war would really matter too much. Teams can only offer so much base salary. What they can offer are performance bonuses, and the ice time to achieve them.

Ok. But it still holds that any given team that wants him would still have only a small chance of wining his services in a FA bidding war. Ergo, they’d trade to get his rights.

If he’s saying he’s going to go all the way to free agency, then he’s saying he’s not signing with anyone
