Hockey: A return to normal as the Pensacola Ice Flyers begin training camp, new season

The natural adrenalin rush and emotion surge during the Pensacola Ice Flyers first practice Saturday had a different kind of feel.

“This year, it’s getting back to normal, for the most part,” said Ice Flyers coach Rod Aldoff, who begins his eighth season behind the bench. This is the first time in three seasons, however, the cloud of the coronavirus pandemic isn’t hovering with practice protocols, restrictions with player and fan interaction and other issues.

“It is a better feeling coming into this season, knowing we will have a good group coming in and as time goes on with the ECHL camps trimming rosters, we’ll see what happens,” Aldoff said.

“At the end of the day, you go play hockey and it’s always exciting.” ...

And from the middle of the pack ...

Birmingham Sweeps Thunderbolts, Continue to Climb the Standings

by James Hayes
November 21, 2022

PELHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham Bulls came out of the weekend with four points after sweeping the Evansville Thunderbolts at home on Friday and Saturday night. Six possible points were available, but unplayable ice conditions in Macon prevented Thursday night’s game against the Mayhem from happening. The Bulls took care of business in overtime Friday night in a 6-5 victory over the Thunderbolts. Saturday night was not as close of a battle as the Bulls took down the Bolts 4-2. ...

Key Takeaways

  • (Jake) Pappalardo, (Mike) Gillespie, and (Mike) Davis all finished the weekend with four points and have been huge pieces to this high-powered Birmingham offense this season.
  • Artur Terchiyev has quietly been producing offense from the blueline this season. He is fifth on the team with nine points and leads all defensemen in points in the SPHL.
  • The Bull’s special teams are top-notch so far this season. The penalty kill unit only allowed one goal on six chances and is currently the best in the league, with an 83.9% success rate. The power play struck twice on nine chances at sits with a 25% success rate which is good enough for third in the league. ...

Let's leave this question to Eddie. This thread needs a boost of the old holiday spirit.
The organization is still coated in McDonald's grease after Kerzner sold. Hard to scrub off. Hard to recruit players to an organization that smells like a cross between stale fries, grade B burgers, and a rotting corpse.

For those who haven't been sucked into the Vermilion County Bobcats' drama covered by other threads in this forum, here is some SPHL schedule shuffling news for this weekend courtesy of OurSportsCentral.com. More to follow ...

The Birmingham Bulls will replace Vermilion County as the opponent for the Huntsville Havoc's home game on Friday, February 10.

The Knoxville Ice Bears will replace Vermilion County as the opponent for Birmingham's home game on Saturday, February 11.

Finally, after playing there Friday, the Macon Mayhem will remain in Fayetteville for the game on Saturday against the Marksmen.

Here's an SPHL hockey brain tickler for you ... The Ceased Ops Bobcats have one less loss this season than the Macon Mayhem (VC = 24 L, MAC = 25 L). So if the League decides to rely on winning percentages instead of earned points to determine the 2022-23 order-of-finish standings, is it possible that the Mayhem - who have 6 games remaining according to the latest published schedule - could end up in the #11 slot at the end of the regular season? Sharpen those pencils, folks, this could get even crazier.

If they finish 11th, then they really need to close up shop.

Quad City & Knoxville (so far) have signed former VC Bobcat players. So either the rumored dispersal draft took place, or the SPHL free agent market session has started.

Meanwhile, the SPHL Standings. The prevailing rumor is that final home ice win percentages will be used to determine rankings for post-season stacking, because home game counts did not change after the VC emergency (I have not confirmed). Note that defending champs Peoria have clinched a playoff appearance (no surprise) while the Boob-cats remain listed (just for old times' sake?) ...

ETA: Sorry for the shift in standings table headers below, lost in translation.

Funny that they kept Vermilion County in. When the ECHL had teams fold mid-season (which happened three times), they pretty much removed them from the standings and pretended they never existed.

SHHHHHHHH ... Don't tell the League office they forgot to hit the DELETE button. This way, the 23 hockey fans left in Danville (all busy attending public hearings instead of hockey games) have something to remain hopeful about. :crossfing
