GDT: 2022-23 season game 50 LA Kings vs Philadelphia Flyers @4:00pm 1/24/23

We’ll see if Torts scratches him next game for that. Look, if that’s Quick and Fiala down there impeding, say, Konecny? Maybe there’s an argument. But even if it was a penalty (it wasn’t), DeAngelo isn’t drawing that call with Copley and Kopitar down there. No way.

The problem is it's the exact same stuff we said last year. The issues are still the issues if not worse.

I'm probably coming off as more pissy about it than I really am, but it's extremely disappointing to me that the net sum of adding Fiala to a healthy team is a lesser pace in a worse division. That can't be seen as growth/success.
You might be pissy, yeah.

I think the pace is down to one thing, and that's goaltending. It was complete and utter shit. Honest question - where do you think the Kings are at in the division if they would have had Copley all year?

They would have had their struggles here and there, but I think they are leading the division. I'm disappointed they didn't upgrade the defense. I don't think anyone expected Cal to fall off a cliff so I don't fault them completely for that.

It's just crazy - 2.80 GAA vs 3.34 and 3.75. Simplistic argument, but Copley has played 18 games and Quick/Cal 36, exactly twice that. If Copley played those 36 games at his pace, that's 94 goals allowed - a 22 goal swing from what Cal/Quick did just for those games. GD would be around+15/+20 and they would be flirting with a top-10 defense. I think the problems in net have had that big of an effect.

Man, Flyers fans are ripping on TDA in their post game thread
It's always like that over there. It's absolutely fabulous how brutally honest they are about their team. Go to Calgary or Edmonton's boards and it's always a conspiracy with the officials that keep them from winning. No conspiracy on the Flyer's board, it's all about how the team is managed and constructed which makes them shitty.

If you think people get down on the team here and nitpick, it's on a completely different level on that board. If you aren't jaded or bitchy about the team you'll stick out like a sore thumb. It's highly entertaining.

Are you f***en kidding? The kids been through hell and back to get to this point and you really think he’d have those ridiculous thoughts?
Your answer was when he came back and played his style after the hit, the kid isn’t going to quit unless he’s taken out on a stretcher.
Once he gets proper ‘man strong’ he will be immense. He’s got heart in spades, tenacity and a grossly underrated skill set. He’s one of these glue guys that teams need.

As a simple reminder (maybe not so much in this thread) that not all of our prospects are gonna make it but not all of them are busts...

...it took Troy Terry until he was 24 years old and Kempe until he was 25 to really find their game at the NHL level, and they both were all-stars last year and dangerous offensive players for their respective teams.

We are seeing it with Byfield now. Dude is really helping the team win in physically, board work, and making some hi-skill plays that I think none of us thought Byfield had it in him. Same goes for JAD (though you have to give some major kudos to Fiala).

Pretty awesome to see the change in their game and their confidence.
That’s not true, I’ve said it all along and I’m not the only one. I watched quite a few of his games in his draft year. The problem was that a lot of the YouTube ‘expert’ bloggers recycled certain narratives that were based on god knows what. Most of them didn’t watch him but still offered a view. It therefore became repeated so often it became the truth.

I said before the draft he should be the #1 pick and my view hasn’t changed.

He’s done the job you’d hope a NHL goaltender would do. However he has benefited from an improved defence and we just don’t know hoe it plays out. If he went into the season as #1 maybe he collapses under the pressure? In this scenario it’s essentially a free hit.

He’s absolutely taken his chance and deserves all the credit but we can play out any scenario with IF. You could equally argue that if the defence had been better then Cal and Quick would have been too. The goaltending was not responsible for the number of 2 on 1 breaks we were giving up, for example.

Lets just hope he continues his solid play, nice job bouncing back from him.

Not exactly scientific, but,

21-22 against the Central: 9-11-4, 72pts over 82 games
21-22 against everyone else: 35-16-7, 109pts over 82 games

22-23 against the Metro: 1-6-1, 31pts over 82 games
22-23 against everyone else: 26-11-5, 111pts over 82 games

We used to say the Kings were great against the East because they're eastern teams, so they don't see them much, so TM doesn't automatically get outcoached. Not the case this year.

In a way, TM redeemed himself by putting Fiala out there with Kopi. He saw that both guys were flying and adapted to the situation. Sorta makes up for that non timeout call against the Hawks. Hopefully Copley is returning to earlier form and was just thrown off by the break. We definitely don't win that game with Quick or Petersen in net, though I do want to see Quick win a game, its been too long...

I agree but that's also partially my point--the goaltending pipeline HAS been an issue and it hasn't been addressed at all, in fact we entered this year in a worse spot. No, I personally didn't expect Cal to fall off a cliff, but I didn't expect much from Quick's swan song, and I said almost in those exact words near the beginning of the year after Parik made it pretty apparent he's done here that we're one injury away from putting our hopes on a journeyman in Copley. In fact, I'll find the posts, because I took all sorts of shit for it. In fact, we're one Quick injury away from a Copley/Villalta platoon with Cal and nearly nothing behind him. It's dereliction of duty...especially with Parik moving off.

I agree with you about where they'd be with consistently competent goaltending but as always--that's WHY I'm so pissed. This team has such clear needs between here and a clear shot at the division that them not being addressed is maddening.

And they know it is a concern as per the alleged attempt to pluck Wallstedt so to go from that to just throwing your hands up in prayer is why it's a hard question that needs to be put to the GM. Whether I agree with it or not, they put literally ALL their hopes (and money) into Cal and it's failed. The contingency plan now is...hope? Hope is not a strategy.

Yeah I'm feeling pretty smug about Byfield right now seeing all the "I didn't think he had it in him" stuff. Like are you kidding me? That's exactly what was advertised...

I will admit this was an unexpected and nice adjustment from TM.

Drew tried to blow it though haha.

Re Byfield- the scouts prior to the draft said in a nutshell...

Lafrenierre- most NHL ready and safest pick to become NHL star
Stuetzle- Highest End Skill and Ceiling
Byfield- Biggest/Strongest/Fastest but will take longer to develop

Seems like the NHL scouts just may know a thing or two about hockey and development curves.

I argued the game IQ think frequently. The other thing was that he could only do things off the rush, it was such a lazy narrative. It was simply that the supporting cast he had in junior was poor, he was more of less on his own. So I saw one clip get used to show his poor game IQ for not passing to a player in a good shooting position. The thing is I’d watched the whole game and QB had set the guy up for 4 or 5 sitters that he missed, so it would have been idiocy to pass it not matter what position the guy was in. In fact passing it would have been poor game IQ.

My biggest worry at that draft was that the Rangers would see sense and take QB. Lafreniere always looked like a guy that had gotten his growth spurt early and that along with it being the Quebec league had me worried that we’d take him. My 1-2 was Byfield, Stützle.

I'll give them credit where it's due, but Philly seems more interested in tanking, meaning they want to lose, meaning they want that outcome. Probably easier to do since TDA is an unlikable turd.

Exact same play during the playoffs or when they're expected to win, and they'd be just as irrational as any other fanbase.

Is that why they are one of the hottest teams since the xmas break? (or at least that's what Faust told us a 100 times during the broadcast)

Pretty important to get top 3 in the division. Oilers have won 6 in a row, Calgary playing a bit better. If we are out of the top 3 Colorado is coming up fast and are playing lights out. Need to keep pushing and win games against weaker opponents. Going to be a crazy end to the season. Can't believe there's only thirty freakin two games left. Season has flown by like nothing.
It's hockey musical chairs. One good team is going to be left without a chair at the end of the season. I hope it's the Oilers, because outside of McDavid, they're so hate-able. Just going with goal differential, one of the Kings, Wild, and Flames will miss the playoffs. Probably the most important factor for the rest of the season is getting and staying healthy. Fortunately the Kings have a more spread schedule than the rest of the competition to get healthy.

Figured once Kane came back Oil would get some mojo...

Despite all the problems, the D, goaltending, coaching, this team is so fun to watch.
Because they can score goals now! The PP can produce and actually help win games! When this wasn't happening in years past, the Kings had to grind so many games and it got boring. Goal scoring and winning always makes hockey more entertaining.

I really like QB as LW1 and most all his his shifts have been stellar there. Now that Kopi is shooting the puck, the opposition is having a hard time containing that line. Kempe is hard to cover and can beat most any player with his speed...Kopi now has a wing that can get him the puck in QB and QB is not worrying about being the forward with the highest defensive responsibility. Listen to what he says - "All my life I've been an offensive player and making plays and I'm now ALLOWING myself to do that again". It sure is working. He's even beginning to play more physical as well. Just please leave the 3 together AND put them all together on PP1 as well. Fiala and Drew the other 2. Once Moore comes back and the Danault line starts playing like they can, going to be even better.
I love that Kupari, Turcotte and Fagemo are playing so well together. They have played together and are pushing each other. They look hungry and want to make an impact...plus they know if they can keep that up, it will be hard for TM to remove any of them. JAD has finally arrived as well....he's more confident and getting his shots of so quick. Fiala makes everyone better and will make JAD his Frederik Gauthier, as long as they play on the same line.
