The problem is that designated deterrent guy has to take up a roster spot and skate actual shifts. Which makes the team you are icing worse.
Or the other theory is that your skill players have more space, take less damage and have more confidence. Not to mention there is definitely space on the 4th line to replace some of the garbage there

I don’t get the des obsession, he was a decent checking winger who would occasionally fight to pump the team up. He didn’t strike me as the deferent type of player who most likely be a liability unless he is playing against the other teams 4th like, aka parros/grimson.

If des is on our team he is unlikely on the ice the same tame as zegras and has no impact on the play that injured him.
Des was the perfect 4th liner. He could check and fight very well, kill penalties and had a good enough shot that he couldn't completely be ignored as an offensive threat on the 4th line. Almost as importantly, he was rarely a liability and didn't take stupid penalties. He was apparently very popular in the locker room as well.

Those that don't see the importance of a player like him on a team are just seeing what they want to see, and don't understand this type of player is still integral in todays game.

The thing is with Des the overall team toughness was low its not just about having an enforcer, it's about having some nasty physical players with the mentality of trying to impose their will out there and this roster doesn't have that at the moment

Agree with your theory. I was addressing the posts on here advocating signing random face puncher from AHL or waivers.

Think tonight might have been the final bell for at least some of De Leo / Gawdin / Regenda / Kirkland / Lopina. None really jumped off the screen tonight, against a largely NHL tier opponent.

This hyperfocus on enforcers is bonkers to me
Lack of physicality and toughness, is a pretty glaring weakness for this group. I don't know how anyone could even begin to deny it.

It's not like anyone was advocating for Osipov to make the team, despite the fact that he could manhandle anyone else we have. I really don't think anyone is being unreasonable about it.

This team is too soft - had three of it's toughest customers depart since the start of last year, and have not done anything to replace their presence. You need guys who can/will answer the bell, it's part of the game.

Although getting someone who can fight would be great, I would just take a few guys that played with intensity and physical play. Jones is a great example., but he is hurt again. You dont need to fight everyone, you need to have them thinking about getting hit when they have the puck, forecheck to apply pressure, finish your checks. To me that is what this team lacks, although having Des being able to drop the gloves would help the young kids confidence.

I think the thing that the team misses most about Deslauriers was not his fighting, it was the way he hit people. In the games where he was brutalizing the other team’s defensemen with (legal) heavy hits, the team played better, because he’d either make them tentative or make rushed decisions, making it easier for the rest of the team to defend and/or collect turnovers. It also wore down those players as the game progressed.

agreed. Think i said it last year around the deadline, but of all the moves, that one was the most confounding and frustrating.

If we got rid of shatt and brought in a rugged rhd…. And got rid of silf and brought in a tough/balanced middle 6 guy…. I’d actually like the line up a lot

Doing this now makes no sense. The best time to have done that was when the off-season officially started this summer if we wanted playoff contenders. We're in a rebuild by design and the roster construction is imbalanced.

I literally rather play Mahura than Shattenkirk. That's all you need to know, at least Mahura moves his feet, shows effort, and actually tries. I don't care what anyone says if you want I can do an isolation video of Shattenkirk last game. I never seen defensemen glide and stand still in the show in my entire life. He is literally the Milano version of a defensemen. Get rid of him and get a physical/defensive/size RHD period.

He needs to be heavily heavily sheltered and our team ain't the one to do it. He literally plays every PK when he barely should be playing at all. Mark my words he will be the sole reason we lose a couple games this season.... Literally the sole reason goals will go in.
