I always felt Gaudreau was kind of a tool. Dude that was like 6 years ago and you still made a shit ton of money. Also, did he not sign the contract? He could have held out, no, and demanded fewer years? The whole thing was strange for me, especially when he signs with a legit basement team instead of New Jersey.

I think Morrow will be fine whatever we do. I hope we sign him now, before his junior year. Canes are a good team to do right by players' $, such as letting Hamilton talk with other teams to max his value before he hit UFA.
To be fair, heading into this season New Jersey looked like they were going to be a basement team as well. Yeah long term they looked better but it was basically either go and sign with a New Jersey team that looked like they were a couple years away after being 5th from f***ing bottom, or sign with a Columbus team that was 20 points better and had Laine and what looked like a budding star in Cole Sillinger. Which... what the actual f*** happened to that guy this season?

I think a lot of it was with everything that happened with Covid, he simply didn't want to live in Canada any longer. From what I can tell reading various things, he was US bound no matter what and not so much pissed about 6 years ago.

Yeah, I agree with this. I think Morrow will sign without much issue since he'd miss out on money early on if he decides against it. plus, I think there's a chance that the idea of chasing down Chatfield for the 3rd RD spot doesn't seem impossible from the outside. It would be great to see him with the black aces and maybe get into a game. I would say it's unlikely, but with RBA having made his NHL debut in the playoffs I think he'd be more inclined to roll the dice if he thought he was ready. a bottom pairing on Nikishin and Morrow next season would be entertaining ideally for the right reasons. I would assume Morrow gets an AHL year, though.

if we hadn't gone out and picked up Ghost I would say his odds of getting in the playoff mix are much higher because the only other option in case of injury is who? Coghlan? yeah that one ain't happening. Coghlan's basically the spiritual successor of Andrew Hutchinson at this point.

I still think he'll sign once UMass is done. They're not a good team this year and I can't see them surviving the gauntlet that is Hockey East to get an NCAA tournament spot.

Figure this season: Black Ace, spot duty towards the end of the season if we're not jockeying for playoff position with New Jersey.

Next season: AHL as top callup since we'll still have Chat under contract for one more year. If he impresses enough in camp and can play the off-side he might be our #6.

24-25: Canes roll out a rookie 3rd pairing of Boom - Morrow. Or Boom - Pesce is a thing and we have someone like Skjei teaming up with Morrow as an absolutely absurd 3rd pairing.

Actually I gotta correct my statement: upon thinking about how it came out, I don't want to claim that the RFA contract thingy was the sole or even topmost reason for Gaudreau leaving, if it was at all. It's just that he has sometime commented on the matter, I can't even remember how he actually commented it and if the ire was directed more at Flames or himself or his agent at time, but the feel I got was that it maybe did burn some goodwill too and not just a year off his ELC.

As for Gaudreau signing with CBJ, I remember there was reports that Eric Robinson is a super good friend of his, and that Jarmo re-signing Robinson with a noticeable and at time questionable raise in salary in 2021 may have been a big reason why Gaudreau chose Columbus.

edit: upon checking it up, Columbus fans seem to have liked the contract when it was signed.

You said it pretty much exactly like I was thinking. I also think Morrow, if we sign him, will get at least one NHL game in the last 10 of the year as a favor and pat on the back. We did it for LaFontaine so why not Morrow? I imagine we could do it in the last reg season game with some maintenance days for Burns and co.

Playing LaFontaine was definitely not a favour or a pat on the back. We were desperate for bodies in net.

Wall and Penn St lost their best of 3 series (1-2) in the Big 10 tournament to OSU to be eliminated. They do expect to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament

Wisconsin was swept by Michigan in their Big 10 tournament series. It isn’t likely that Wisconsin gets an at-large bid. While that would put Lucius on signing watch, he is likely to return for another season.

Denver plays Miami (OH) this weekend in a 3 game series for a chance to go to the NCHC semis

UND plays Omaha (who they just swept this past weekend) in the same NCHC tournament.

9 seeded UMASS plays the 8 seed Boston College on Wednesday at 7pm in the hockey East opening round.

If UMASS wins on Wednesday they will draw #1 Boston U on Friday.

I'm watching Wisconsin Badger hockey and just learned the Hurricanes drafted their leading scorer/one good player, Cruz Lucius.

Did you catch any of the Michigan series? Sounds like the Badgers gave them all they could handle on Friday night.

Any chance Lucius is ready to sign or is he headed back for at least one more season of college hockey?

not sure on that one and it may simply come down to contract numbers for next season and guys that HAVE to be signed before we lose their rights. I think we're looking at about 44 contracts given those guys (minus Montgomery who probably won't get a contract) and the roster holes we're looking at filling. 46 after Morrow and Rizzo who most expect us to sign after their seasons end. So there's a chance, question is if he will want to sign or spend another year playing in the college ranks. I don't think there's a huge urgency to get a deal done yet though he's looking much more like the first rounder he was projected to be at the start of the 21-22 season than where we drafted him after his injuries last year. There's room if he does especially since he, Robidas, and Orr would all be slide-eligible if they stay in the A next season IIRC.

slides for Orr and Robidas are over this season as they both are D+2. both will start using their ELCs next year.

Lucius likely goes back as a sophomore unless he just blows the doors off in propect camp (if he comes).

right now, assuming 22 roster players next year, we have 35 contracts. Add 4 prospects to the list (Morrow, Blake, Rizzo, and Robidas), 2 goalies for the AHL squad, and 4 other AHL veteran types. 46 contracts with Orr, Montgomery, Wall, Fensmore, Webber, and Lucius as possible contracts. Im guessing Lucius goes back to school. one of Webber and Montgomery may sign if we strike out on a college UFA. Fenmore is the most likely of that group just to see what he can do. Orr is a maybe. Wall likely walks to UFA.

We have 9 forwards on contract (8 here as Tiek stays in Liiga)
3 defenders
0 goalies

prospects add 3 forwards and 1 defender.
4 AHL vet types (3 defenders, 1 forward)
then how do we fill in the last spots? adding another forward and defender would give us 47 contracts.

I think that (out of the group listed) the Canes will sign Fensore, Morrow, Robidas, and Wall this season to ELCs. I don't see any NCAA free agents joining, especially with so many contending teams being so starved of draft capital after this nutty deadline. Fensore is a long shot but is a fantastic skater and therefore has a Matt Grzelcyk-esque precedence to potentially becoming an NHL piece. Maybe Hamrla and Rizzo both decide to also join in, as well, although their rights don't technically expire until 2025. Heimosalmi and Koivunen likely will join the AHL, as well.

Denver is up 6-2 in the 3rd. they won the 1st game 6-2 as well. The look to move on to the NCHC frozen four.

UND is in a dog fight with Kucharski's Omaha. Omaha won game 1 2-1 and now UND is up 2-1 in the 3rd.

Boston is playing in the ECAC semis next friday. They beat Vermont 7-3.

UND won game 3 5-2 over Omaha. Omaha likely makes the field despite losing. UND needs to make the final to feel confident about making the field. They play St. Cloud St on Friday in the semis.

Blake had 1 goal in the 3 game series. Kucharski didnt play.

SKA won their series 4-1 against Dinamo.

it could mean nothing, it could mean something, but I noticed that eliteprospects has removed Nikishin's extension from his completed transactions list where it used to appear. I find it odd they would do that. there doesn't seem to be any straightforward IIHF legal way to buy out a contract from the KHL to my knowledge, but it damn sure seems like something is being discussed. if we were able to get him over starting next season and had 2 years of his ELC it would go a bit towards forgiveness for the Meier fiasco.
